How can you not care for Earthbound, but like SMRPG?
Who knows. I've tried to play through Earthbound 5 or 6 times and I've never made it to the end. I want to like it, I just can't.
Keep trying! You can learn to like it at the rate you're going, I just know it!
Seriously, though, a person's liking or disliking of Earthbound will be 100% determined by how the game's unique charm hits the player. If you like the charm, you'll like the game. If not, not. Just that simple. As one who LOVES Earthbound's charm, I can't help but wonder what's wrong with those who don't, at least a little. But I'm reasonably accepting (or so I'd like to think), regardless of the fanboy level my avatar would seem to suggest (I DID have to get that picture from Starmen.net, after all).
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P
Y'know, some of the ideas for Mother 3 went into what is now the Animal Crossing series, but you don't see as much love for it, now do you? Honestly, I want the original Mother on VC more than the sequel. It's awesome... the only thing I hate about it is the whiny half of it's fanbase. XP
The original Mother is a good game, but it pales in comparison to its elder... mothers. I'd love to see it on VC, too, though, just not nearly as much as the other two games.
What ideas for Mother 3 went into Animal Crossing? I've never heard anything of the sort. Itoi and his office are known to be fans of the series, but that's all. That's interesting.
On a side note, I heard two young girls talking excitedly about Animal Crossing: City Folk at my godson's baseball game today. It was funny to hear these kids talking so seriously about their "part-time jobs" and their boss Tom Nook, haha.
Still, what ideas are you talking about? I didn't realize there was more of a connection between the two besides the fact that they liked each others games.
Oh, thanks, I hadn't realized that was up yet! Very interesting. I like the RPG : Board Game comparison. I often feel the same way, and I like how Mother 3 works around this by letting you see one town throughout some huge changes and how the characters react. NPCs feel much less stale, and each has his own developed story. Such a perfect game!
I've played Earthbound in the past. Its a decent enough RPG but I couldn't get into it as much as some people here are crazy for it. I don't think its that good. I'd still download it and enjoy it if and when it comes to the Virtual Console.
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!
Well I'm in my first ever playthrough of EarthBound and I must say I'm very impressed. The battle system is interesting enough and the main story, while pretty simplistic, is full of amusing, unexpected, quirky twists. On the whole an enjoyable game with recognisably retro difficulty.
I'm also playing through it right now, though no telling how many times this makes. I find with each playthrough that Onett through Fourside loses a little bit of its magic. Even before Mother 3 came around and replaced it as my favorite RPG, I've always thought it a slow starting game, which I think is why many don't like it. It's hard to get to Moonside and beyond and not be impressed.
Anyway I'm with BassX0, I don't think the game is as good as many say it is...maybe it's because of cultural differences, but it doesn't really seem to appeal to me...and l hear that impression from a few people...
if anyone thinks EB SNES is a drag-out battle, try playing it on the NES. grinding 16 + hours for a piece of mind that youll be able to survive to the next area gets old after a couple weekends. i can tell by the comments about this series, rather negative or positive opinions of this game, it did something to everyone who has ever played it, which bleeds intrest to some peak . imo, this is not one of those games that should be critisized for being different...but should be critisized for being "different". if you get my drift.

Seeing as how Bass was the first person to post in two years, I'm guessing Bass bumped it
Anyways, on topic, I would like to play this game and would love to see it on the VC.
this is one of many reasons this game is a CONSPIRACY! no one will let it die. that says something.

I definitely never had to grind for 16+ hours in the NES Earthbound. Aside from the very beginning, I rarely had to grind at all, that I recall. Definitely a much harder game than the SNES game though.
I recently got to try out the fan translation of Mother 3 and I'm liking it more so than Mother 2 known as Earthbound in America. It has a much more emotional story but I wont spoil it. I'm getting to know Lucas better and his story is a really tragic one. It's such a crock that Nintendo won't officially release the whole series in America.
