There were problems with more than music: dialog and images, too. Sound was probably the biggy, though. It's a shame Nintendo of Japan won't let us have an altered version.

And aren't we well past our 100th VC game...?
We're close to 300 VC games actually. I think we will get Majora's Mask as our 300th VC game and not Earthbound. But I have a Earthbound cartridge though,so I'm not too upset.
I have my Earthbound cartridge, too, but it does annoy me that there is only one game (assuming Mario Kart will eventually come out) that is detaining my dream to have only one console.
And even if we do get EB on VC, I'll still be complaining about the lack of Mother 3 on DS or WiiWare.
I'm expecting Earthbound to be solid but nothing amazing. I'm thinking similar gameplay to Dragon Quest, just with the crazy plot and modern setting. Of course there's the possibility of misfortune, and it could just be overhyped to death.
@Digiki Well the better way to describe EarthBound (Mother 2) is that it's "Different", you may like it or not. I like it, but is like as you said "Solid but nothing (too) amazing" "similar gameplay to Dragon Quest, just with the crazy plot and modern setting." And it's a bit overhyped among Nintendo Core's Gamers. But's IMO it's a experience worth playing at least one time until the end (the begining can be a little dificult) Mother 3 (AKA EarthBound 2) is also worth playing (it's less oldschool like and it's more fun to play) and also Mother (AKA EarthBound Zero) if you like oldschool 8-Bit RPGs.
If anyone plays the game for the battle system, then they will certainly be disappointed. It's by no means bad, but it's not the highlight of the game -- just a means for progressing the story.
But the basic Dragon Quest system works well and has certainly been satisfactory for most for a long time, so while the basic system may not be amazing, it is still fun. And the rolling HP meter adds a lot more than you'd expect, especially once you're farther in the game when it's not only more challenging but you'll have more time to let the meter roll due to the increased hit points. Having that small window of recovery time if you can select your actions quickly enough makes battles much more intense. And there's also the trippy backgrounds that are still cool -- though perhaps not as amazing as they were originally -- to this day.
Mother 3 takes all that was good about the battle system from M2 and tops it off with the rhythm combo system, so if you want fun battles, that is the game to go to in the series.
I keep my Earthbound cart and guide book only because it's gotten so expensive over the years. It ranks quite low on my Super NES RPG list. I just don't llike it much. I know it has a loyal following, and I think that's great. I just don't get it.
I just want the chance to play this game again. I feel stupid for not buying when I had the chance as a kid. I rented it from a Blockbuster and I remember they actually lent out the massive strategy guide too! I only have fond memories of this game. I would just like to see if its still as good as I remember!
As much as I really want to see EarthBound on the VC, it isn't going to happen. There's too much stuff in the game that needs to be edited, music, dialog, Mr T!? Plus Reggie must get 100 letters a day from rabbid fanboys demanding it to come. If I was him I would've gone back in time and prevent the game's existance. But hey, there's a reason why Emulation exists...
>_> yeah we already know that Corbie... Don't need to say that everytime somebody pronounce "EarthBound"
(I bet that you didn't play the game in years...)
I can't state my disdain for Earthbound enough. And every time I see the word, I'll chime it. Oh, and I did play about halfway through it right before Christmas. I just couldn't stick with it to the end and ended up popping in Soul Blazer instead.
I'll definitely be getting Earthbound, I just don't expect it to live up to the hype, I presume it'd be the best turn-based RPG on the VC, actually 2nd due to Paper Mario...

How can you not care for Earthbound, but like SMRPG?
EarthBound is timeless. It is the quintessential SNES RPG. Sure, its not for everybody - as this thread shows - but there is a reason why the following is so hardcore.
