I'd love to see Super Mario Kingdom or something to that effect. Actually get to explore the Mushroom Kingdom the way I've been able to explore Hyrule.
If I can dream a little, a 3D Mario game with a world and story like the Mario & Luigi games would be incredible. Open world, ridiculous plots, humorous dialog... Anyway, back to the waking world. I'm sure whatever comes will be fun but like many have said, no timer please.
It will probably be a single player focused game. The local multiplayer of Mario 3D World is the main selling point, IMO, so that base is already covered.
Whilst Sunshine is definitely my favourite Mario game of all time, I don't want to see a sequel. I admire the game for its vibrant atmosphere and unique twist, so that's all I'm asking for in the next installment.
@WiiULoveGBA I think you might be overexaggerating that quite a bit.

I sound like a broken record, but a spiritual 3D sequel to Super Mario Bros 2 USA and Super Mario Land 2: 6 golden coins would be ace. Both set in different universes, inhabited by different foes & baddies. King koopa is in serious need of a break. Let Wart or somebody else shine for one. yeesh.
I agree 100%.. I want all the baddies from Super Mario Bros. 2 to come to 3D. At least 3D World did that a little by bringing us a few new bosses and let us play as the Line Up from SMB2, but I want more.. MOAR!!!
@WiiULoveGBA I think you might be overexaggerating that quite a bit.
Well the concept is an exaggeration of 3D Mario for sure, but in terms of what video games are doing today there's no exaggeration. To say that some people don't have a wish to experiment with Nintendo franchises having game worlds as big and seamless as popular third parties are making them, isn't entirely accurate. People do want an epic open world Mario, and until it arrives there will always be some with reservations to every revealed Mario until the gameplay convinces them it's a fine compromise...(for now) lol
Not that I would be a big fan of that idea, but would it really matter? Mario has appeared in about every gaming genre, from racing, to platformers, rgps, fighters and puzzle games. I mean, it would only add another style of gameplay to the Mario franchise. After all, he is a character without a genre.
Don't tell me, is HAL Laboratory working on a Kirby game next, too?

And then Nintendo announces a Starfox Adventures+Metroid Other M crossover sequel.
To top it off, it's being developed by EA. Now that's a game we can all look forward too.
...Anyways, I'm hoping for a Mario game more in the vein of N64 but I wouldn't mind another Galaxy or even Sunshine, though I wasn't a huge fan of it... in fact I refuse to even finish the game. I'm sure things would be different this time around, Nintendo seems to have mastered cameras and controls pretty impressively if 3D world is anything to go by.
I agree completely with @renaryuugufan92 . Super Mario 3D World isn't a bad game, it's quite good. But it's basically just NSB in 3D. Its atmosphere and explorative aspects are completely absent compared to the 64/Sunshine/Galaxy games. Not to mention there are so many levels where the third dimension is so underutilized the game may as well be 2D at that point.

Even after all this time, Super Mario 64 is still my favorite game in the series. I really hope they do something like it again. I would even be happy with a Super Mario 64 HD remake ala Windwaker at this point.
New Super Mario Bros in Mario world, you take on the role of Mario to rescue princess Mario from the evil king Mario; battle his Mario minions; don't forget you can collect 100 Mario's for an extra Mario to help Mario Mario all the live long Mario, come on Nintendo ends this Mario drought already.
