@Yai: What kind of weapon are you using? I could give you some helpful tips if I knew your weapon playstyle.

So far the roller feels like it fits quite well. But still a lot to unlock so I might settle into something else as time goes on.

The splatter shot jr is nice too but I get a lot of satisfaction painting a lot quickly with the roller.

I played 4 games of Splatfest and quit. I'm on the Science team and we lost all 4 games. Even when I'm doing well, I look down on the gamepad and my team is getting annihilated.

I also use the Rollers. I suck at aiming in this game and practiced a bunch with the motion controls, tried different sensitivity settings, etc... never got the hang of it. I just use the rollers and turn the motion control off.

@Yai: As for the roller, jumping and then splatting is the best way to kill other Inklings. Depending on which roller you're using, sub weapons can be very useful. I won't spoil the weapons that you haven't unlocked yet, but the jump then splat technique is best for any kind of roller. You almost never want to try and squish somebody unless they're stuck in your color ink.

I used to main the Splattershot Jr., I agree that it's a great weapon. The Bubbler is really good for when you're surrounded, or when you're about the get splatted. The nice thing about the Bubbler is that you can pass on the effect to your teammates if they're close enough to you when you use it.

If you're ever going to try a sniper weapon, I would recommend staying in the back, and letting your teammates do the war zone work. Sniping is best done when the sniper is safe from danger.

A couple other tips:
~If you're fighting with someone, being on higher ground gives you a huge advantage.
~Upgrading your gear to match your weapon type is a good idea. Different abilities can really help you in battle.
~It's easy to sometimes forget about your sub weapon, be sure to use them!
~Try to never stay in one place for too long, unless you're a sniper trying to splat someone. In turf war, the more you move around, the more you're helping your team by spreading your color ink!
~Never be afraid to send out a signal to your teammates (You can do this by pressing either up or down on the D-Pad for different messages), like "Come on!" or "Booyah!"
~In stages like Bluefin Depot, hiding on the walls is a great way to confuse the enemy. That way, you can decide when you want to move up and surprise them!

Hope this helps! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

@Blue_Blur: Thanks so much for the detailed response! These are all really helpful tips. Especially the jump splatting I had no idea that was so effective.

When splatfest is over I'll try practising more on Turf War to get the feel for it since it is filled with insanely good people right now which makes it hard to try out things.

@Yai: One more good tip I thought I'd share is that going the same direction as a teammate isn't a bad thing. A lot of times, I would be in a situation where I wouldn't have survived without a partner. You might not ink as much turf with two Inklings in the same area, but at least you're more likely to keep that turf your color by being able to defend it. You can also learn a lot from watching other people play right beside you. I have learned many effective tips and tricks from doing this.

I've also noticed on non-splatfest days, you get paired up with a lot more lower level people, so hopefully you'll find some and be able to practice with them. Good luck!!

First time my team didn't win, but I did completely forget about Splatfest... and was just thinking about playing today...but I didn't. Oh well.

I would have never guessed Weezing was so useful until I played a HeartGold Nuzlocke!

Played a few matches this morning as well, and have now completed the task to get to the Messy Queen title.
The outcome of matches are often predictable, even prior to the match. My teams mostly had an average of around 35, and would often loose against teams with level 40+ average, but would often win against teams with level 30- average. Of course there were exceptions, and that was the most fun matches.
I often got matched with players close to my own level, and as long as that happened the matches was very fun. Also, very few disconnects from any players during matches (I think I saw 1 on the opponent side during the whole Splatfest), but a few disconnects in the lobby.

Yay! This is the first time my team won! Or wait, did team Cats win? I think we lost popularity, or something. Oh well, look how close it is! Nintendo really picked a good topic this time.

@Morpheel: That seems to happen at least once a week lol. Nothing for this game surprises me anymore. I think Nintendo should milk it for as long as they can.

@Morpheel It might be the one that's back a page or 2 posted by Undead. Not sure what to believe though.
