on the bright side it's not PAID on disc DLC. Something Capcom was notorious for a few years back.
No, they locked all the PAID on disc DLC behind the difficult to acquire $35 worth of amiibo. I could have easily bought them if I wanted to,but I decided for me they weren't worth it, picked up Charizard and silver Mario instead, but that's still what it is, on disc PAID DLC, just like Capcom.
Edit: Oops. sorry, looks like this topic was already beaten to death, I'm a very slow typist.
Tried ranked battles and they're probably too hard for me at the moment. Everybody seems to be level-20 on it and I really felt overwhelmed sometimes. I had put together a strategy that works very well for me in turf wars, but it doesn't apply in ranked battles so I have to come up with something new - the weapon I usually use in TF is absolutely worthless in RB. The thing I really like about this mode is that if you don't play well enough then your team is going to lose no matter what, because you're battling for a such a small piece of stage that you don't have the luxury to diverge.
It's good fun but I'll probably stick with TF until I get to level-20 and unlock the three star equipment and new weapons.

To me, the amiibos are essentially overpriced on-disc DLC.
It's not essential and it's a toy. But yeah if you want to split hairs I guess you're right.
Essential and essentially have very different definitions (strangely). Definitely wasn't claiming they were essential.
Don't you hate it when you make a really good argument but then your point gets deflected as your comment gets dissected word by word? I'm talking about the "over-priced" part, which I suppose is a subjective and arguable point, but the "essentially" part works too.
I've actually argued previously that the in game content you get from the Spaltoon amiibo was not over-priced, but a good value for your dollar when compared to the Toad amiibo in Captain Toad which does almost nothing, and Kirby, Metaknight and King Dedede which do very little if you only bought them for Kirby's Rainbow Curse. The Splatoon amiibo give you challenges, skins and weapons, so they actually do add something of value, akin to a season pass, but they are on disc, and you need to pay to unlock it.
So while people may discuss them being over-priced or essential your basic point - on disc locked content - is undeniable.

no one cares
Well that's an ignorant statement. It's clear that others have the same sentiment. Just look at rjejr's post. If you mean that the majority of people don't care, you are probably correct though.
EDIT: Also sorry about making this get off topic. I guess I should just stop replying.

It's weapon skins, no new weapons AFAIK. What you get from an amiibo is the challenges and the mini game. The rest are skins (although the gear is consistently 2-star gear, but that can also be done in-game).
To me, a single added map adds more value to the game than an amiibo.
The way I have always seen Amiibo is that they are toys/gadgets that as a bonus unlock small extra features, and not the other way around. They are just toys, they are not exactly made to expand the games...half of the people who purchased these pieces of plastic don't even have the games!

Anyone know if they will add Turf War to Ranked Battle at some point?
Don't think there is confirmation to them adding or not adding it, but I really doubt it. I think Turf War would have to have some kind of rule change for it to work in the Ranked style, and then it would be a different mode at that point.

Three star equipment seems to be very important for rank battles. I also think that the sniper weapons are important for this mode (though i admittedly am terrible with them). The strategy is totally different. I do wish they had voice chat for the ranked modes (or some way to alert other players of how to play). I have teammates that keep trying to paint territory rather than capture the splat zone and it is really annoying. Hopefully people figure these modes out because I am having a hard time ranking up due to people not knowing what they are doing.
@Barely_Able Yeah I definitely notice the difference without Ink Saver. I'm wondering with that many Damage Ups if the .96 Gal becomes one shot kills though. That would give them a huge advantage. All those abilities actually seem pretty solid as far as Ranked goes though.
You really just have to alter your play, going into squid form more frequently helps a lot. I did the same thing you did and found myself running out too quick then I just kept popping back into squid form every 5 seconds and tend to never run out. It's almost a rhythm based system
In addition, I'd like to see someone do a side by side test with someone in game. I think the more empty your reservoir is, the slower it refills. I don't have exact numbers but it feels like before hte half way marker, it fills up twice as quick. for example let's say it takes 6 seconds to fill the tank on empty. half way should take 3 right? but it feels like 1-2.
