What makes you say that? In my opinion, this is the very first good Splatfest theme. In fact, it was an ingenious theme, because it actually influenced the matches themself.
I was on team barbarian and the different play styles were very apparent. The blue team was always trying to sneak up on you, while my teams played very aggressive. And most of the time, we were able to contain the enemy near their base, they stood no chance. Team barbarian probably won by a landslide.
Unfortunately, I only made it to champion, 88/99. Shouldn't have taken so many breaks to change my gear and weapons (I use Splatfests to clear sub slots since I rarely play TW otherwise).
I'd like to have more Splatoon-related Splatfests and not any more of those opinion- or taste-related Splatfests. They were dumb and boring. But this Splatfest had actual meaning.
Pretty popular? I'd even say it's mainstream there (from what I read online). Sometimes I wish I lived in Japan. Not just because of Splatoon, there are so many interesting things there, culturally, but also regarding electronics, robotics etc. They are always ten years ahead of us. @TingLz: From my experience with Sloshers (the only melee weapon I occasionally use), it's vital to have as much ink saver (main) as possible. If you can combine that with ink recovery, even better. Those damn buckets use so much ink, it's ridiculous. ^^
They distribute a lot of ink, so anything regarding the special isn't that necessary (but not totally useless, of course). @Nicolai: Wow, I guess he just loves his baby. ^^ He got really choked up in the middle of his speech. Happy to hear that there might be more content! Maybe he plays Splatoon himself and likes to have more content to play around with.
@shani: Oh, I'm not saying the theme is mediocre. I love it!
I was saying that my time during the Splatfest was... meh. My playing style varies between the two and was thinking about picking the Barbarian side but I picked Ninja at the last moment and I feel I'm going to regret it a bit. With Splatfests, I play until I get to the King rank. Previously taking about 3 hours, this time it took about 4 1/2 hours...

@DreamyViridi: @Jazzer94: That concurrs with my observations. Ninja teams were way too stealthy and overcautious, they rarely confronted us head on. My teams on the other hand were always on full offensive and pushed the enemy back to their own base. Never before did I have so many 70-80% to 10-20% wins during a Splatfest before. I think at least a third or maybe even half of the matches went that way.
I could never play like that. Standing around and waiting, that's not me. No offense stealth players (everyone should play the way they like, that gives the game more variety), but for me it would feel cowardly and like wasting my time. But mostly, I'm just not able to stand still. Or to use a German (although Germany is standing still) saying: to stand still is to go backwards.
That said, I'd like to see more Splatoon-related Splatfests.
Like Shooters and Chargers against Rollers, Brushes and Sloshers.
Or Turf War vs. Ranked.
Or maybe someting related to the gear abilities.
Generally, I'd just like to see more Splatfest contests between play styles. Because that was really interesting. For the first time ever, it felt like the teams actually meant someting. For the first time, I continued to play although I couldn't reach the next rank anymore. Just because I cared. Because the cause of my team was important to me in the context of Splatoon.
