I'll have to play some squad once I'm better, but I'm recovering from a cold at the moment

Once I'm better, it might be an idea for me to play a bit of ranked by myself for a while until I figure out how to play well at this game again. I think my performance has been lacking recently.

You're both brilliant players. I always though I was a rubbish player, and I managed to get to get to S rank. If I can do it, anyone can. You just have to find weapons that click, and be on modes that click with you. Rainmaker's probably the easiest. If you have a good mindset, you can go far, cause lots of people don't. :/

@Jazzer94: I don't know, maybe it has more to do with your playing style? I played Turf War for a couple of hours yesterday with a friend (DaGreen). I'm lvl45 (A) and he's lvl31 (B). In only one match there was a player with lvl7 and after the second match he was gone.

As I askes before: When this happens, do you stay in the lobby or do you leave it? Because of course nothing will change if you stay in the lobby.
Then again, it could be totally unrelated to the lvl and insteads have something to do with style of play, time of the day etc.
Even the matchmaking in Twin Squads has improved drastically.
A few months before I played twin squad with DaGreen a lot, but we constantly got matches with S players and lost. So in the end he got demotivated and stopped playing.
Now that his graphics card is broken he was forced to play more Wii U again and yesterday when we played twin squads later, in almost every match we got matched with/against A and B players. Only sometimes there was one S player, but that was okay. It wasn't like before, where most of the players were S ranks.

@shani When I say frequently that includes room rotation.

@Jazzer94: Ah okay, I wasn't sure. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying what you experienced is false or anything, I'm just saying my experience (especially recently) is totally different. I don't know what the reason behind it is though.

@Jazzer94: No, that can't be the reason why I (almost) never encounter lvl7's (for examples).
I was searching for the reason why our experiences regarding the matchmaking are so different. The only explanation that comes to mind is different play styles, but I'm not really sure if that can serve as an explanation.

Even if there are less lvl7's than lvl50's (I think generally there are less single-digit than two-digit players, but surely not so many lvl50's), it shouldn't be a problem to put the single digit lvl people together.

But then again, I don't think it's so terrible if a rookie gets matched with an experienced player in Turf War. It's not like the lvl50 players are soo good that they will crush the lvl7's. I've played against a lot of lvl50 players who actually were really bad and when I looked at their rank (like C or maybe sometimes B), it only confirmed it. So really, the lvl doesn't say much about competence, only about the time spent while playing (the rank on the other hand is far more significant). And everyone has a different learning curve. Some people are quick learners while others don't learn anything at all.

Besides, Turf War is so simple, everyone can play it. And a rookie will always benefit from fighting alongside or against an experienced player.

@shani: yes it is lol, think about it logically if there are more lvl 50s they are less likely to see lvl 7s but lvl 7s will see more lvl 50s.

@Jazzer94: Yeah but that would mean that the matchmaking is perfect on one end and terrible on the other end.
I mean, there are still tons of people between lvl 10-20 and 20-30 (and I rarely see them in matches). I'd guess they lvl 1-9 players would be matched against them before they would be matched against the others. But of course I could be wrong, I haven't tried it out myself. I can only say that when my buddy DaGreen started with Splatoon a few months ago, he was matched against single digit-players and lvl50 players the same. That's totally alright if you ask me.

But here's a thought: Maybe the game matches an aspiring lvl7 with a awful lvl50 because they are a good match for each other? If the lvl50 player is actually awful and has no idea what he's doing, the ambitioned lvl7 player (or in your case: already experienced player) will most likely play even better than the awful lvl50 player. Don't focus too much on the lvl because it's essentially meaningless.

Had a ball playing tower today instead of frustration it was actually making me laugh how horrible some of the players were in B+,A- rank rooms.

@Kinan I hate Splatzones with a passion. They're not built for Rollers. I just keep getting taken out over and over again. Used to hate Tower Control too, until I worked out how to place suction bombs in a hurry. I guess it all depends on weapon choice.
Which mode do you prefer, if any?
Rainmaker's pretty good for B ranks, because if you know what you're doing, and never take the same route twice, you're golden. Don't be afraid to die in service to the rainmaker. Two decent players are all you need to win a Rainmaker match. Three's better, but not always necessary.

Plus it's the mode where you can pull off the most impressive wins. It's possible to get well under a minute victories.

Rainmaker is the best mode, but I am always much more successful in Splat Zones. When I drop in ranks, I just wait for Splat Zones to move up again.

Yes, that's how it works. I'm currently at level 37. If I'm on a winning streak, the next time I connect it's more likely that I'm joined with level 45+ players. If I'm on a loosing streak, it's more likely that I get level 15-30 level players in the next lobby. I have encountered players lower than level 10 playing as good as good level 40+ players (and level 50 players playing really bad), so the level number doesn't mean a thing.

@Kinan just learn which paths you can take to get the rainmaker to the goal. There are often choke points which you dread as a rainmaker, and love as an attacker, like the stretch in the two far corners of kelp dome, that the rainmaker must pass through to get that way. And an extra point is a worthy death. Don't bother firing the Rm, unless absolutely neccessary. Just get as far through as possible.

@TheXReturns: That's my strategy!

Had a real nice run this morning right back into S. Won 9 out of 10 to get back there. Splat Zones isn't my favorite mode but more often then not it's when I get back into S

There's nothing quite like charging towards the opposing goal in Rainmaker when it gets you the lead. I can imagine some of my teammates going nuts about where I'm going with it when I'm nowhere near the goal and me shouting "It's worth it!!".

IMHO the secret to success when you carry the Rainmaker is speed and stealth. It is NOT really a weapon but a path-maker that should be used sparingly when you're stuck or cornered. If you stop to fight (or even worse: go looking for a fight) you will get slaughtered. One more thing: if you know there are 3 or 4 opponents ahead of you don't seek a confrontation but outsmart them by taking a different route or approach.

@Mk_II: Agreed to a point; the primary objective is to advance, but if you already have been ambushed, and you're nowhere near taking the lead, it's worth it if you can take your opponent out, and buy a little time. Also, if everyone is in a central area, and there's no easy alternate route, a few well-placed blasts can help your team clear the way for you. But if the way forward is open, DO NOT hesitate for one second.

Yeah. I've even managed to confuse the enemy so much, by running straight at them, that they just stood there and did nothing, until I was 5 away from the goal. That was such a fun rm game. XD.

But equally, I've had games where the others in my team (I'm mainly thinking Flounder heights here) were all on the other side, and not one of them made a move to come back and stop a rainmaker virtually at the podium. Fast Respawn works wonders. As does dive bombing them with a roller. XD Can't remember if I won that one or not. It's probably in the back catalogue of 582 pages...

But seriously, equip some quick respawns, some quick super jumps and stealth jump, and you're golden. Even a few points can swing a whole game. If the rainmaker is there, run with it. Even if only for a few metres. (Within reason. If there's an enemy you can see to splat, go for that instead, unless you're literally a few points from taking the lead. Respawning the shield will also slow them down too.
