We almost don't have any information about this game at all. How do we know that it will be bad, or good?

Considering the reaction to the reveal, I'm guessing it's a bad sign. Everyone called it out as being Sticker Star 2, with everything we didn't like about it being held intact. I'm sure they realizing giving people a deeper look into the game with a hands on demo would just confirm the fanbase's suspicions and give it an even worse reputation than it already has. Smart on their part, I'd say.

@Operative I know I'm gonna sound like some conspiracy theorist, but I honestly think they knew this would happen, given how it was presented in the direct (they just threw it out there, and immediately switched over to Pokken without any sort of transition, as if to say "Here's a new Paper Mario! Isn't that great-QUICK! Switch it to Pokken! Maybe they'll forget this exists and won't get mad!"), or how it doesn't even show up on the Direct page. If this is the case, the reason they went along with it anyways is probably because they didn't have much left for the Wii U, and Intelligent Systems was most likely too busy with Fates, so this was probably the best they could crank out in their spare time. Either that, or they didn't find out what people thought about Sticker Star until it was too late. Or they honestly thought people loved Sticker Star, and this is all new to them. Anyways, I guess there's nothing we can do now except wait and see if it shows up at e3, or if they'll simply try to sweep the game under the rug.

@NintendoFan64 of course they knew what would happen. Contrary to the 'twee old Nintendo' bridges' thoughts, Nintendo are most definitely up to date with the latest trends, thoughts and opinions, particularly ones around their audience. They (or at least NoA) are aware of the likes/dislikes their videos and Directs get on YouTube, and like most publishers they're aware and put quite a bit of stock into reviews and Metacritic. It's no coincidence that Federation Force and this game are two that are being shuffled along towards release very quietly, along with amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis Ultra Smash last year.

They'll still show it (there's gotta be some sort of obligation to show all first party games, particularly Mario games) but they gotta make the most of what games Nintendo decide to make. I certainly don't envy the higher profile people at Nintendo and their PR team, particularly with the recent embarrassments surrounding Alison Rapp and No Man's Sky, the rise of social media makes people easier targets, to the point where death threats are expected upon 'bad news' happening surrounding video games.

@TheLastLugia If they know a game will receive a lot of backlash, why even bother developing the game in the first place? Mario Tennis and amiibo Festival bombed and didn't sell well at all. If they knew those games wouldn't sell in the first place, I doubt they would've released them at all. Those games are doing Nintendo more harm than good.

It's kinda silly to think that IS or Nintendo would release a game knowing that there would be significant backlash. Sticker Star released long enough ago that the feedback from the game should have weighed in on their decisions for Color Splash as well.

Also, Fates was out in Japan months before Color Splash was revealed.

...Point taken. Looks like it's most likely that the correct answer was choice #3: They honestly thought that people loved Sticker Star, and this is all new to them. Either that, or they really, REALLY wanted to make a Sticker Star 2...despite the fact that it would've probably pi$$ed a lot of people off, and might not even sell that well (Considering that Nintendo has royally pi$$ed off the Paper Mario fanbase with this game, and that people would probably be a bit more cautious with this game after Sticker Star, I do not foresee this game being a success.)

To be fair, we don't actually know how Color Splash is played. If IS was aware of the feedback for Sticker Star when they started coming up with ideas for the game and they still decided to go this route, then that's pretty bad. I'm willing to wait and see how the game plays because IS is one of my favorite developers (Fire Emblem AND Paper Mario? swoons), but there definitely is enough from that trailer to be concerned.

Personally I think Sticker Star only really missed on 2 things: no partners, and stickers not being renewable. Address those 2 issues and I'm good.

They will if Color Splash bombs. I mean, sure they could cancel the series after that, but even Nintendo would notice a trend forming.

And heck, didn't Mario & Luigi Paper Jam sell rather poorly? That should be warning one that the Sticker Star formula isn't the best one...

We know there's no original characters.

Its continuing the trend Miyamoto set with sticker star, and followed with paper jam.

"No original characters allowed, no story allowed"

For many fans, that isn't OK.

On a personal note, I like Allison Rapp. I feel bad that she lost her job and the internet tore her apart. yes I know why, she could have been smarter about her conduct, but she's not a bad person that she's made out to be.

I actually think it's highly likely that Color Splash will be a good video game, but I don't think it was necessary to **** on fans of the old games to give us that good video game. So basically, it's Nintendo's DMC.

@TheSuperStarSaga Clearly because you've played the game from start to finish.
And funny how original characters mean Toads playing costume party.

There's more original characters than just toads. All the Mario RPG games prior to Sticker Star had many different species of enemies and characters, most being very memorable.

-Quick question before we continue this discussion. Have played any Mario RPG games (Paper Mario series, Mario & Luigi series, Legend of the Seven Stars)? And which ones did you play?

@TheSuperStarSaga Not sure why you're asking me that question but I've played 4/5 of the M&L games (haven't played the most recent one), Paper Mario, PM: Sticker Star, and SMRPG.
And I'm very well aware of the fact that original characters include more than just Toads (hence my first comment to you).

Alright, I asked because I wanted to know if you understood what I meant when I said original characters.

While none of us have played color splash it's clear that there won't be any original characters. It's because of the trend, the trailer, and past statements from developers.

Sticker Star: The trailers only showed a generic cast of Mario characters, goombas and toads. When the game came out there were no original characters. Miyamoto ordered the removal of story and original characters in Sticker Star. Miyamoto told the developers of Sticker Star "It’s fine without a story, so do we really need one?’ And, ‘As much as possible, complete it with only characters from the Super Mario world". ( source: http://kotaku.com/5964444/miyamoto-convinced-the-people-behin... )

Dream Team: The trailers showed a large cast of original characters and brand new enemies. The game was filled with original characters when it came out. Nintendo tried to convince Dream Team to ditch story and characters too, but Alpha Dream fought back which is likely why Dream Team had great story and many new and returning original characters. Translations of an interview regarding Dream Team's development states "The requests and suggestions by Nintendo on Alpha Dream were not always accepted and often required meetings, or discussions with the SPD producers. Sometimes both parties got annoyed with each other." ( source: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=67599871postcount=1 )

Paper Jam: The trailers only showed a generic cast of Mario characters, goombas and toads. When the game came out there were no original characters. It is evident by Paper Jam's more simplistic story and no original characters with the exception of Starlow, that this new rule (the banning of original characters and story from Mario RPGs) is still in place. Just like Sticker Star, the cast of characters was limited to generic characters (Toads, Toads, Toads, Toads, Toads, Toads, Goombas, Goombas, Goombas, Goombas). The crossover between the two series completely neglected previous original characters from both series, it was as if they never existed and had been retconned. No new originals were added either. Miyamoto likely restricted the developers once again.

Color Splash: The trailers only showed a generic cast of Mario characters, goombas and toads. The trend is just going to continue. There is actual proof that Miyamoto ordered the removal of story and characters from the series ( source: http://i1.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/089/758/bda.png ). He even says he doesn't like story in Mario ( source: http://www.wired.com/2009/06/super-mario-galaxy-2/ ).

I'm inclined to agree with @TheSuperStarSaga

Generic cast galore. I doubt the developers would make 3 games with no unique characters on purpose unless Miyamoto or other management did this. Paper Jam was such a missed opportunity. Color splash is shaping up to be bland despite the colors haha minus the flying bucket character. I can hope for the best but won't know until it's released.

@TomJ Just another reason for nintendo to give up on Paper Mario on a home console because it will sell a couple hundred thousand IF that. The cycle continues until the NX
