@TomJ: I just felt that "out with Miyamoto in the game industry please!" is something no one older than 10 could say seriously considering all he's done. You can dislike him by all means, I personally think the pervert Hideo Kojima is very dislikable, but 'out with him in the games industry'? Nah. Good to see you've realised how dumb that sounded.

Though the recent comparisons and such people have posted have changed my preliminary opinion of this game, kinda a shame that the comparisons are so gauche between the first two Paper Mario games and what has come since, though I'll forever be a fan of the third game regardless of others' thoughts on it, and that's what's keeping me from ruling this game out of a purchase. For now at least.

How's that?

Thanks for posting this mature video in which the creator of the video had good arguments.

It would be great if David Wise made soundtracks to all future Nintendo games.

I think Nintendo realised how badly it'd be received and decided not to take a chance by uploading it. Especially after how badly Metroid Prime Federation Force is being ripped to shreds on all official Nintendo Youtube channels (they had to disable ratings for that one).

I find this line of thought interesting because I don't understand at what point this "realization" would occur. After it's revealed, obviously, but this seems to suggest that they would have anticipated the negative response before the reveal, which doesn't make sense to me as they developed the idea and went through with developing the game, far enough to show it off.

I hope that makes sense. What I'm trying to get at is at what point do they go from "let's make this game" to "looks like we're going to get fan backlash," and how is it possible to come to that conclusion before revealing the game? I'm mostly interested in what people take to be Nintendo's line of thinking when they speak of these "realizations."

Well, they put up Metroid Prime Federation Force videos first. They got torn to pieces, to the point they shut down ratings on the videos.

Then well... if they looked on Twitter or Youtube at all, they'd have seen the huge hurricane of criticism this game was getting and likely panicked. I mean, they didn't already have a video saved for this game, since the leaked Nintendo Direct folder didn't show a sub directory for Paper Mario. So presumably, while they were cutting up the Nintendo Direct presentation for the individual Youtube videos, they saw the criticism come flooding in thick and fast and thought 'oh god, we're gonna get slaughtered here'.

Seeing GameXplain's video couldn't have helped either. Those guys have been getting like, 2000 downvotes for every hundred or so likes for this title...

Ugh that about said it for me. I use to like seeing plain red dot toads because it resembled the actual character "Toad" from Mario Party/Kart/Everything else but now that's all we have, it's like wth? Toadsworth has seemingly moved over to the Mario & Luigi RPGs permanently with only minor cameos in other games now. Which idk about you, but he's really annoying in most of those games. I liked Sunshine Toadsworth ;(

I.. mean.. it's not as we've seen the entire game already.. It was a minute of footage.

A minute of footage that didn't give a reason to get excited about anything other than the graphics. I really hope I´m proven wrong because I really miss the days Paper Mario was "great", not just "ok". Super Paper Mario was a spin-off and I thought they´d go back to original formula that worked really well after that. Then came Sticker Star. Another experiment that was mostly 7/10 stuff. Not bad but no match for the original PM or TTYD. Could we now finally have another Paper Mario game with great battle mechanics, good story, interesting characters and exciting locations?

Here's some predictions about this game I hope won´t happen:

  • Bowser kidnaps Peach and has a new Color Form in final battle
  • There are no new characters, just identical Toads
  • First world is a grassy plain, secong is a desert, third is a spooky forest, then a jungle and a snowy mountain...

That's a fair argument and all, but Nintendo knew what it was doing when it made that trailer. It quite obviously emphasizes the sticker star influences. From cards down to the generic toads. They specifically wanted people to know what to expect from the game, as far as the characters and battle system go.

Actually, he DOES show that he knows why people liked the first two games in the first place (listing the gameplay, areas, characters, and stories). Yeah, I don't understand that statement either.

Did you watch the video? He clearly explained why the first two games were so good.

Did you watch it? That is loosely what he said, it was about 1:15 in.

Also laughing at "Not my paper Mario." Didn't realise that the person behind the muppet created Paper Mario.

The livestream chat during the TTYD GameXplain stream yesterday was mostly complaining about Color Splash.

The video is quite good and he makes a lot of points. I didn't realised that the Mario&Luigi series has the same problem as Paper Mario since I only played the first two games.

You could say that, in fact you did. Problem is my statement was not attacking his argument, rather his sense of ownership towards the Paper Mario series

All these conspiracy theories. You realize there were a few games that didn't get trailers right? Kirby didn't get a trailer, were they anticipating a bad reaction for that? What about rhythm heaven?

I call BS on the whole thing. The game is probably going to be a lot better than what some are suggesting. I doubt Nintendo is going out of their way to "ruin" Paper Mario. There had been what, one bad Paper Mario? Come on guys....

Ignoring shaneoh's ignorance, it really is astounding to see Not!PaperMario and Not!MetroidPrime's laughable justification both together at the same time. It's like Nintendo is willfully ignoring the consensus of 'please stop making spinoffs instead of core sequels.' Even if Retro actually is working on an NX Prime game right now, there's just no reason to be marketing Federation nonsense right now. You hold your cards close to your chest until you're able to reveal what people want to see—that's how the internet works. As if to illustrate that point Nintendo is rereleasing Twilight Princess right now—one of their best selling games that did exactly that. They didn't announce Phantom Hourglass first.

I have just no idea what is going on with Paper Mario. Like, did they just decide that it's not worth it to put the effort into critically acclaimed games that will sell 2-3 million copies anymore? They have to make the lazy lite version of the lite RPG? It's so clearly not even trying with the separate levels and white border on the characters. People have been comparing it to Super Mario Sunshine—laughable. At least Sunshine tried something.

Everyone rags on the Wii for not having games.

I miss all of those games that were on the Wii that aren't being made anymore.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

The difference between Color Splash and Sticker Star is that Color Splash looks like it might be a good game on it's own, just not what fans are looking for in a Paper Mario game. Sticker Star is garbage period.

@Haru17 Retro is confirmed to not be working on a Metroid Prime title as of E3 last year. They could potentially be working on a non-Prime Metroid game, but I seriously doubt it unless they wanted to make Other M 2 for some reason, which if that happens I might die laughing.
