Iwata's statement left me feeling very uneasy. Is management planning to axe their hardware department and move onto smart devices? Or are they going to be building their own smart device?
Ugh! I don't like the sound of this article, I really would not understand it, as their portable hardware (3DS) is doing rather well........it will be a very sad day when I see a 2.99 Mario game in the App Store.
Keep rolling with the 3DS, end the Wii U's existence in 3 or 4 years, and come out with a portable that you can play on your television.
I sincerely doubt Nintendo would just jump ship and abandon hardware. First parties can only get you so far, and they have a distinct advantage in actually making hardware and software work together. In any case, the drawback of abandoning hardware would be that Nintendo markets would be limited, always, to a place where there is competition. A warm market, I think it's called. Hardware such as the NES, Wii and NDS allowed them to pursue colder markets, ones that didn't exist before. (It's like having your first glass of champagne)
So abandoning hardware to focus on software, while good in short term sales, would be bad long term, as the brand could be tarnished or weakened, and limited to existing markets/outlets. But they do need to make better hardware decisions in the face of a bad economy and rising expire tires, as well as tons of tech.
Also losing Iwata in the middle of a generation would, I think, do just as much to hurt Nintendo as abandoning Wii U. Be patient, the market is volatile, the economy is struggling, and Nintendo made a few blunders. I think this Wii U fiasco will make or break Iwata. Removing him would break but I sense a chance. Basically, it's not over yet.
hahahahhaha I doubt it. Nintendo wouldn't be dumb to pull a Sega move right now...

Nintendo fanboys before a Mario IOS game — Ohh, we love Iwata!! We love when he wears the Luigi hat during the Nintendo directs! Stay forever Iwata, lets play Pokemon! Yay!! Hehe!

To be fair, who's says it has to be a game that is released on IOS? Nintendo IP's are recognizable, they just need more leverage. I seem to remember a game called. Mario teaches typing, Mario's Game a gallery, Mario cartoons, Mario comics.
But yeah, actual Mario game on IOS = no way. That would suck

dear nintendo,
buy sega, buy some new studios, develope some awesome games, make the next console not far behind in power so you get 3rd-party support and have fun winning every console war forever with this strategy.
so wait, I though they thought Wii U was just gonna reach 9 million, not that that was their expected sales for the short term? Because that was so blatantly not going to happen it's embarrassing. I don't think even Ps4 will do that.
At least their expectations are low so that they can easily surpass them. Not sure why they don't do that all the time, they could trick people into thinking they're always doing far better than expected. XD

I sincerely hope you aren't referring to me, seeing as
1. I'm not a Nintendo fanboy
2. I haven't liked Iwata for a while
3.I've been saying I'm tired of Mario games in general for the past year
and 4. I don't even play Pokemon.
If you were speaking hypothetically disregard that. If you were talking to someone else disregard.

I'm uneasy, too. My hope is this:
Continue with the WiiU, but start thinking about it's successor now. That means design phase 2014, Prototype it 2015, and release it in late 2016. Have it be equal to what the PS4, and XBone can do, and you are set. This may not be an option, however, due to their losses, and their R&D is also working on something, which is either a third pillar response (doubtful, since they haven't admitted there was a problem with their business model before now), or the 3DS successor.
I think the WiiU is fine, actually. Yeah, it's not selling, for a lot of reasons. I would ride it out, personally, as I believe Smash and Mario Kart are going to push sales. I think if they just ride it out, it will eventually achieve Gamecube levels of success. Nothing to brag about, but at least not worse.
3DS is a beast...not like the DS, but that is their own fault. Trying to charge $250, and throwing a 3D screen on it, which already failed with the Virtual Boy...it didn't make a whole lot of sense. 3D TV's at that time, and still haven't, achieved massive market penetration. It was a bungle that lies solely with Iwata. He threw the dice, though, and I like that Nintendo does gamble sometimes.
The only thing is that it has failed as miserably as it succeeded the generation before. Personally, I really like Iwata, and I don't want to see him go. This man approved the development of some of the best games I have ever played in my life: Mario Galaxy, Battalion Wars 2, Metroid Prime 3 (and Trilogy), Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, etc., on the Wii, and tons more games on the DS. I can't even count them. Nintendo was on fire, all because of his leadership.
Anyway, what I would like to see Iwata do, is this. Work on their console business, and continue pushing their handhelds. I think relying on platformers a little too much, has really kinda hurt their originality (which is still top notch, with games like X, and Wonderful 101 (yeah, I know Platinum...but Nintendo funded the game, and Bayo 2). I believe they will release a third pillar system. It will be a smartphone, or a tablet (the most likely option). I believe this tablet will have it's main focus, of being the Virtual Console machine. From day one, nearly every game in their back catalog will be there, and available for purchase. Iwata will use some of the small teams that are focused on eShop games, to supply new games for this tablet, at a cheaper price than their 3DS, and WiiU games.
I don't think the Nintendo we know, and love, is going anywhere. I believe they will just add a new type of hardware, like the tablet I described, to test the waters of the iPad lovers, and smartphone users.
