After FINALLY getting my physical copy this weekend (Nintendo leaving your country does that, sadly), I spent 10 hours today thinking this one up and making it work. If you're a Megaman fan, please give it a go and tell me what you think.
@I had to skip like 10 courses in a row because I don't even try "perfect timed jump" courses.
I read somewhere in the comments of a 100 Mario Challenge video, from a guy who doesn't own the game, that it looks boring and tedious... And I only replied to it that this is the 100 Mario Challenge he's watching, he can't expect good levels there.
Personally I quite like the "raw stream" of the 100 Mario Challenge. You're far more likely to be a fair judge of a level if you don't go into it knowing who made it, how many stars they've got and so on. And I think that over time the system does reward people who make better levels. I think I've already seen a slow improvement in the quality of levels being produced.
The only thing I kind of don't like about the 100 Mario Challenge is you can't see the map of the course before the level starts and that's part of the appeal on most of my stages because I make a picture (Larry's face a few posts above). I know not seeing the map might be a good thing and some people prefer it that way though.
I've yet to finish the 100 Mario Challenge on the expert setting. I got about 7 out of 16 courses and had to quit. It stopped being fun when you have to die over twenty times to beat a level.
@Rexcalibr: I haven't beaten the expert mode yet either but most of the fun is in playing through random levels anyways. Getting to the end is a nice challenge but it's not everything. Plus with the expert levels you do get quite a few levels that are just poorly designed. Far more than you do with normal levels. Just like if you go to the easy levels you tend to get a few very, very empty levels.

I played through the Easy mode and all the levels were poor. Most of them had the goal almost right near the start of the level.
When I play the Expert mode, I'll see maybe 1-3 good levels while the rest are bad, and not difficult because of how you play, but just trial and error and cheap deaths.
Most of the good levels I've seen have been on the Medium mode.
The biggest thing I see is a lot of the levels are poorly designed but are spammed with items, amiibo costumes, and sound/screen effects to try and make it seem more appealing. I can tell who really spent time creating their level and who didn't.
As far as getting stars, I find that if your course is easy, the better your chances at getting more stars. I got 17 stars on one of my courses (I've made five so far) and it happens to be the easiest one I've made and the most liked.
@Wonteen I tried yours but so much was going on and I dislike courses where you can't really see what you are doing at all :/
@Dpishere Played Diddy Kongs rescue, I found this really fun. I'm curious though.. was there a Diddy Kong costume at the end? If so I missed it. If not though it would of been kool to see =P deff got a star for nostalgia alone.
@eXtremeHippo played Yoshi's Island. I found this really fun and pretty to look at, at points I thought there were too many koopa's but I get that you were trying to recreate the level and it was necessary. Good job! I starred it
@dings Played Donkey Kong level. I enjoyed it a lot, starred ^^
@Rexcalibr Played Larry's Lockdown. Given the time of night I didn't get too far, I got to the chain chomp door before dying lol, it was a really fun course though from what I saw. Awesome art too on the pic Starred
@SuperWiiU The Unspookable Mansion played. I did not complete this one either, I found it fun and creative though! I got a bit confused and lost, no idea if I just went off the wrong ledge or not in the chain chomp room.
I played these levels viewing codes from my phone so I apologize if I mixed up anyones course or anything. I tried to remember it all and I have goldfish memory xD
Anywayyy I had a lot of fun with your guys courses, hope you will play mine in return courses in signature and I will edit to add the codes here if it's easier.

I got to the 9th course on expert mode before losing all my lives. I question if I will ever complete expert mode. lool
I end up wasting so many lives on troll levels :l

What I did on expert mode was skip the levels that looked impossible/troll levels.

Well being the stat obsessed person I am I actually put all of the stats of my levels into a spreadsheet. I don't have that many data points yet but from what I can tell there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern. I thought there was because of one of the first levels I made which got a lot of stars and happened to be fairly easy. But since then I've made levels with ~20% clear rates that have gotten a higher rate of stars.
With that said, looking at the numbers there are a few levels I've made with a high number of stars that are similar. It's a pattern of four but still. All of them are easy enough that more than 70% of the people who played the level got to the end. But even with that being the case the clear rate is still around 20%. The levels that didn't get stars? Even if the clear rate was above 20% most people didn't actually finish the level.
Which is a really long winded way of saying that levels should be hard enough that people die but interesting enough that they don't give up. That's the trick. And the quickest way to have people give up is to put in a cheap death.

I do most of the time but sometimes you can't tell till you die and then you just lose a life. or 5.. lolol I've come across stages where there is like 50 fire bars in a row or completely random timing of enemies. There was this stage today in expert I wasted over 20 lives on all because Bowser is random in his attacks/movements. I can't predict if he will jump or not and it was a speed run course filled with multiple jumps in new super Mario theme. the ending too...omg x.x they lined up a bunch of spikes and a small as hell gap for mario to fit through with a thwomp coming right down. So much satisfaction when I beat it though.... XD I feel Nintendo needs to find a way to fix expert mode to get rid of troll levels and levels you just flat out get stuck in.

@Pahvi:
I think there's a difference between the type of levels that get 1000s of stars and the type of level that gets 10s of stars. To be at the top of the charts you need to have a level that's pretty insane. Or maybe have some sort of publicity for that level outside of the system in general. And once a level becomes popular it gets more stars purely because it is popular. Before I would have said that the top of the charts was important but after playing it? I'd argue that side of the equation isn't that important.
What's more important is the fact that a level that's really bad won't get any stars at all. A level that's not particularly impressive may get one or two but won't go much further. If someone is creating levels like that? They're not going to get more upload slots. And people who make some levels like that are encouraged to delete those levels and replace them with something that will get some stars. If someone is making a lot of create levels? They will be able to upload more of them quicker than someone who isn't.
Talking of the rate at which levels get stars well I calculated that for my own levels. Some were up at about 20-25% and others were under 5%. I deleted the ones that were under 5% when I created new levels I wanted to upload.
i apologize if this was answered earlier, but do you get another costume if you beat the 10 mario challenge on expert? I already got one for beating it on normal.
Man, this thread moves superfast! O_O
I agree with everyone about 100Mario Challenge and the troll levels with dead ends that kill you and whatnot. Last time I played I skipped what must have been 20 or so stages that were jumps of faith and whatnot, because they just aren't fun.
I'll try and play some other NL-made levels though, because they've been great fun so far. Luckily, you guys make some good stuff!

Once again guys, you don't get anything special for beating 100-man on expert, except Peach says something like "It must have been so hard for you to get here. You truly are my hero!" NOT. WORTH. You still only get one costume after you beat it. It's possible that like, the last 1-10 costumes you need to unlock are unlocked via expert 100-man, but otherwise it functions the same as normal.
Also I have a new course up that I highly recommend, but I don't want to clog up this thread anymore with levels. So just check my sig if you're interested. Should be the first one.
I would have never guessed Weezing was so useful until I played a HeartGold Nuzlocke! My YouTube Channel! Video game related, of course! My Pushmo Levels
I created a new level (called Music Mario Maestro), where I tried to expand on the idea of music levels, by integrating the music in the platforming instead of auto-play.

Hi guys, been reading this site for years, but registered today to participate in the super mario maker community. I've been playing the stages posted here and there are some great ideas, starred the ones I liked. I.d love to have some of you look at my stages, and share those stars around.
I think my best ones are:
Link and the Midas Castle D233 0000 004E 75E9
Yoshi must die 28E6 0000 0054 ACD7
Give the Racoon the Boot A4A1 0000 0053 3E24
There's always a bigger squid B8F7 0000 0055 9C4E
And my newest
Gweedy Warios Treasure Vault 8FFB 0000 005C 1707
Thanks a lot, the stages you guys share are definitely better than the average
Sorry I don't post much, but I've gathered another 6 levels I'll be recording for the creators' pleasure. And of course everyone else who wants to see me fumble through their creations. : p
Also for anyone else; let me know if any of you want to see me fumble through your level. I'll have Mario Maker go up every wednesday on my channel for the moment, and I'll probably switch it to thursday at some point. So let me know what you want to see me try and I'll add it to the list : )
Excellent! Can't wait!
You were expecting a signature, boy I bet You're Disappointed.

You also get a migraine. These levels are dreadful.
Spent like 9 hours making this course! Wasn't sure what to do, and suddenly, inspiration struck! If you're a fan of ghost houses, I don't mean to tout my own horn, but this is a really fun, pretty puzzling one. I'd say the difficulty is average but I'm a pretty good platformer, others may find it more difficult.
