How's Street Fighter Alpha 3 on the GBA? Do the controls get in the way as often as it looks like they would? I'd love the portability. Or should I just get the PS1 version?
So apparently some of the SNES Fire Emblem games have fan translations. Which of the Super Famicom FE games are worth playing?
@Retro_on_theGo: If you enjoyed the first Fire Emblem remake on DS (Prince Marth & co.) and wish to expand your experience of its storyline, you would probably like the first SNES one despite its graphical weakness (like a lot of the oldest SNES games). It includes a remake of the first NES game (except a few cut-out chapters) who was later released again as a DS reamke and a sequel to it (whose DS upgrade is exclusive to Japan). The universe was again extended thanks to several Satellaview "downloadable" short episodes, the Records of Archanea War but I am not aware of any existing translation.
I would tend to recommend the fourth game, Genealogy of the Holy War (Seisen no Keifu). Compared to the previous entry, the graphics are far better: the darker colours suit really good to the story "more serious" tone (I know the others are not comedy, but I still feel like that), the characters sprites are all well rendered and the artworks are great (I actually prefer this character-design to the recent ones). It introduced the generations system later tweaked on the 3DS and I personnally took some liking towards several characters from each generation ^^", this was probably helped by the fact the 2nd gen characters introduction does not feel totally artificial like it does in Awakening. There were many great weapons (the noble families relics among them) and skills made it more interesting (especially if you like "breeding"). If you're not into the coupling/support system, you'll likely end up with default descendants who are really useless (the less you get, the best you'll play). You won't probably be stunned today when you will see the maps but it was really impressive back then (even for me who started with the 7th and 6th episodes on GBA): they are really vaste and count several fortresses/castles. Despite that, you had already the possibility to save your party at a certain point if you wished to hypothetically redo it. The fact that you can't freely trade items belongings between units can pull off some players. A definitive "go-for-it" if you like Fire Emblem.
The next installment, Thracia 776, is a kind of side-story to "Seisen no Keifu". The plot is consequently less "big" (at least from what I could understand, I did not play through all of it) and so are the maps. This "side quest" quest happens before the game leader rejoins the "seisen no keifu" team, so it stands chronologically more or like between two chapters of the 4th game. It introduces a tricky way to get opponents items by capturing them instead of simply killing them (but like in any FE, only some foes owns interesting things). You can get access to special chapters if you trigger some events on certain maps. An annoying but innovative idea was implemented (then never reused in later games): your units have a stamina count in order to prevent you from over-using some of them and if they are fully exhausted, they will have to rest until the next chapter. I noticed that this game tends to be seen as a difficulty peak in the Fire Emblem history, certainly a source of enjoyment for all the old fans of the franchise. A major problem for me was the lack of comprehension since only the menu were translated back when I tried it, now things have changed and a group has released a story translation patch (but you will miss out on the menus). https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/03/matters_of_import_pr...
You probably already know that those two great games mark the end of the classic FE era since they are the last ones from the Fire Emblem creator.
(I invite you to forray some minutes into the selenes forest forum to find the best patches out there if you do not want bad surprises who will make you stop your adventure prematurely.)
PS: sorry for my bad english, I hope it still conveyed you a good impression on all those good games.
One of my favorite SNES games is Super Mario RPG Legend of The 7 Stars, it has a very good storyline and great characters. And the gameplay and music are right on as well.
Have you played Rondo of Blood yet? Dracula X is a gimped version of that game.
I played it on my friends PC engine import and it's amazing. I believe you can play the non gimped version on the Wii VC too. Def a top 5 Castlevania game and a pity it never came out on the SNES.

It was my very first RPG experience, which was perfect for me because it starts out easy enough and difficulty ramps up gradually. By the time I beat it I was ready for hardcore JRPGs.
Check out my new web comic 'Random Time Encounters':

Kirby's Avalanche is a great 2 player puzzle game on the SNES. A lot of good trash talking can be had. Physical copies are still pretty cheap here in the states.
Okay I made a thread about this a couple days ago, and a kind person lead me to this thread. Do you guys recommend Castlevania IV or Secret of Mana for SNES? Which one is worth my time more?
Check out my YouTube channel if you love gaming, and Nintendo (especially Metroid) I think you'll enjoy my videos. :)

Consider this the sword in the stone for this generation.
No guides, no FAQ's, an online version of the instruction manual is acceptable but not required for a true savior.
The genesis port is great, even though it's missing some stuff.
Figure out how to start the game, and you will begin to understand how it works. Once you realize how it works you will realize you are a god among your plebian peers.
Beat it, and you have proven yourself as the chosen one, destined to purge the cancer that is the worst generation and usher in the design renaissance.
Completely over looked and under appreciated game due to the time of its release but Kirby's Dreamland 3 is def a top 20 SNES title. Visually stunning, classic/tight gameplay. It's great for a relaxing play through after a long RPG.
Flashback is a pretty great game if you enjoyed Out of This World. The Mega Drive version is completely uncensored. There's a modern remake of this game but I've never played it.
This blue eye perceives all things conjoined. The past, the future, and the present. Everything flows and all is connected. This eye is not merely seen reality. It is touching the truth. Open the eye of truth... There is nothing to fear.

I forgot about that. I've only played the Sega CD version on emulators, but it's indeed a great game. I like more than Blackthorne and Prince of Persia (classic), at least. I never did get around to Another World, though....
Right now I'm playing "Donkey Kong" for the original game boy on my 3ds. It was a hidden gem I didn't knew about until a few weeks. It's amazing how beautiful the sprites look, enemy variety, level design and all the moves Mario has, making him way more acrobatic than any other of his games on the NES or Super Nintendo.
Another gem I didn't now about and that I'm enjoying replaying it over and over is Shinobi 3. It's quite a fun game, specially with the "expert ninja" controls wich were added for the 3ds. It doesn't affect the difficulty and it gives you better control over the character. Also, I'm not much of a fan of the 3D effect, but this game looks beautiful with it. Nintendo did a spectacular job with the Sega Classics.
Other games I would recommend that aren't so popular are : Gargoyle's quest 2, Megaman extreme 2 and River City Ransom (this las one has download play and it's really fun).
@SeaSalty Well, recommending Mario Kart or Smash would be weird since you said action adventure games. Since you said that RPG's are ok too, Tales of Symphonia is a good option. Star Fox Assault was quite fun for me and it also has pvp so I really recommend that one. I never tried them, but the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games based on the 2003 cartoon looked quite fun.
Shadowrun for the Mega Drive (1994): A great cyberpunk action RPG with a lot of customization and great depth. You can even hack into the Matrix!
The SNES and MD version are completely different games. The SNES game has a better plot and music while the MD version has better combat. Both are worth a look.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an American football game for Game Boy (DMG through AGB)? Most of my experience is on NES for Tecmo Bowl & Tecmo Super Bowl. It doesn't have to have the NFL license, but that doesn't hurt either. Thanks.
