Advanced Tactics: Gold TacOps 4 Harpoon Classic Panzer Corps Civilization 5 Panzer Command: Ostfront Nobunaga's Ambition Romance of the Three Kingdoms Field of Glory Hearts of Iron 3 Pride of Nations Total War games (especially Napoleon) King Arthur: The Roleplaying Wargame
(the later two are a mix between RTS and turn based strategy, I know).
All those games make Advance Wars look about as complex as Angry Birds.
they may be more complex, but advance wars got more charm.
There are some great games in that list, although, I prefer Civilization IV. Advance Wars is a ton of fun, but a tad lacking compared to some of those gems.

Just in terms of strategy. I like Advance Wars, and have had a lot of fun with it over the years, but it's the Checkers of strategy games. Anyone who claims it's a "great" strategy game is missing out, I feel - so I recommend checking out all of those games above.

No, but I have that movie on DVD. The sequel sucked big time... I was referring to Final Fantasy Tactics. That game was awesome, but not necessarily for its violence perpetrated by/against children.
