FFVI hands down...that one is in a league of it's own compared to almost all rpgs. Enjoyed most of the others (except VIII...loved the first 5 hours and then at the train takeover it went downhill fast for me and never came back, but I know a lot of people like that one a lot)

For me FFVIII picks up around the second disc, and just soars by the third.
I loved everything about that game, aside from the draw system, which I found easy enough to forgive.

Is that with the one at the top being the best or the one at the bottom?
High-five for the Star Fox user reference. But I think you know I'm sane, so yeah, best at the top.
No, you quite aren't. How can anyone hate FF VI so much and rank FF II higher???? Anyone in their right mind knows that FF II (the NES II, not IV) is the weakest and worst FF game.
But I digress.
I already explained this, but I disliked the story and found the gameplay to be flawed. As for FFII, the PSP remake fixed everyone of the problems, making it a genuinely good game.
I've only played two FF games and they were both awful: X and IV. Neither were worth finishing, imo. These games only focus on story, and cinematics in the case of X, but have horrible gameplay and the dreaded random battles.
Not so much awful as not your own taste, I think. Because those criticisms apply to virtually the entire JRPG genre in one way or another, and that genre is quite clearly not awful.
You have a valid point, but I am quite fond of Golden Sun, Chrono Trigger, and Super Mario RPG. Square should have learned from there own successes in CT and SMrpg, but they didn't aparently.

Then you're contradicting yourself, because those are very story driven games.

But the first disc was a slow starter, I agree.
I have to admit I didn't make it to the 2nd disc. I played for about 5 more hours after the disappointing train take over (neat in concept but pitiful in execution). I hated the draw mechanism...didn't like Squal . I loved the first 5 hours and thought "this could be great". I don't usually care for dance scenes, but the dance scene in VIII is one of the best I have seen (other than the opera scene in VI
It's ashame I lost interest before it got good though in that case I was always happy that IX returned back to the form I enjoyed.
The first one I bought was X and it is still special to me.
So it's between those two...VII was ironically the second one I bought since I wanted to get IX but VII was easy to find and cheap (not now...it costs about £100 used!), and although it was good, it was over rated.
My favourite 2D RPG is of course VI but I felt that V felt more fulfilling storywise as VI felt stale after the first half of the game (I hate fetch quests...despite being optional).
