Lucky I saved the last time I ranted on it. It may not be pretty, but here it goes:

Final Fantasy VI - I think I just went into this game with false expectations, so it's placement on this list is a bit unfair. Nonetheless, it's still by far me least favorite Final Fantasy games, and definitely the game that stands out whenever I think of my least favorite RPGs. The story felt like something that could've come out of a kid's cartoon, and the characters were flat, linear, poorly developed, and generally uninteresting. Now, here's where the false expectations come into play: I was constantly told that FF6 had the best story in the whole series, and that nothing else comes close, so I went in expecting a well-written, serious story populated by well-developed characters who grow over time, like in many other Final Fantasy games. Such was not the case in FF6, but I honestly don't think that it was really trying to be like that. Its cartoony story actually fits the theme of the rest of the game, and if I had known that beforehand, maybe I could've appreciated it. Of course, that didn't save it from its gameplay: The combat was unbalanced and too easy, especially if you employ certain infinitely useful tactics to make things even easier. Then there's the huge amount of mini games-like mechanics that simply drove me nuts: in one gameplay session, I went from an RTS, to riding a chocobo, to a Kung-fu fight, to navigating a raft along a river maze, and then finally a stealth section...and I had no clue why I was doing any of that! It's just so random! No consistency at all! I don't mind new gameplay mechanics that then become the standard, or if they include some fun extras every once in a while, but in Final Fantasy 6 it happens so often that it feels like I'm playing some kind if mini game collection, instead of a whole game. To put it bluntly, this definitely not what I'd call the best in the series, and it's definitely not what I look for in an RPG.
@mickeymac I'm surprised about what you said about the story as it seemed really good and Kefka looks like such an awesome villain. The mini-game mechanics do sound annoying though, espcially if they occur as frequentley as you implied and the battle system sounds like it could be better from what you said but after hearing so much praise it may still be worth trying out for me as my opinion may be more similar to other people's opinions but it also may not be.
Well, it's certainly worth trying, especially now that it's only $8. I'm more or less saying that it's just not my cup of tea. Really, that was one of my better rants.
I've enjoyed pretty much the whole series, the only exceptions being 3 and 10. I haven't really tried out 4, 8, or 11-14 yet. For some reason I really enjoy the first over the majority of the games, I can't really explain it. 2 is way too underrated, it's the only Final Fantasy game I've beaten in under 3 days. I like 5, although I found it boring at times. The job system is amazing and it has, in my opinion, the best final boss battle in the series. I like 6... It's just that no matter how many times I play it, I can't seem to beat it. I don't know what it is, I just can't. It especially doesn't help that my game erased every file last time I tried to beat it. 7 is my favorite... nothing more to say, really. And 9 is awesome. I still haven't beat it... though I was really close a few years ago, but once again, my file was erased, this time by a sibling.
XIII. It's the only one I finished. Might try VII all the way as that it's on PSN

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad

Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!

That game looks horrible imo. Maybe good many years ago, but bleh now!
I agree with that. I find VII unplayable because its aesthetics (read: not graphics, aesthetics), are way off. It's by far the least visually interesting Final Fantasy game.
I'd suggest giving IX a try if you're looking for a PS Final Fantasy. VIII is a bit too polarising to be a safe recommendation, and though I wasn't personally a huge fan, many consider IX to be the best of that bunch of games.
Lieutenant Commander of the Lesbian Love Brigade
There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
Chrono Trigger! But seriously, IV was my first (on GBA, I started FF late) so I'll always like it.
I really like the job system in V, VI is great because, well, it's FFVI.
VII, I just can't get into it. Maybe it's the graphics, it hasn't exactly aged well. Maybe it's the crappy digital movement, although Sony's horrible D-pad could rub me the wrong way there.
I played about 45 hours straight of XII but then just quit. It stopped appealing to me.
Um...couldn't get into Tactics Advance, it's too slow after my first turn-based tactical games were Advance Wars and Fire Emblem, which EVERYONE, even you, can agree is the cream of the Turn-based strategy crop.
Crystal Chronicles isn't really a FF series IMO, just mediocre action with Fira and Malboro.
In the end, I'll say I like IV the most, followed by VI.

Only on the Wii and Nintendo DS/ 3DS. There's a world of far, far better turn based strategy games on the other consoles, iPad, and PC.

Advanced Tactics: Gold TacOps 4 Harpoon Classic Panzer Corps Civilization 5 Panzer Command: Ostfront Nobunaga's Ambition Romance of the Three Kingdoms Field of Glory Hearts of Iron 3 Pride of Nations Total War games (especially Napoleon) King Arthur: The Roleplaying Wargame
(the later two are a mix between RTS and turn based strategy, I know).
All those games make Advance Wars look about as complex as Angry Birds.
