I don't like character customisation at all but Far Cry is at least one of the games that's best suited to it. Far better than something like Xenoblade X or Fire Emblem where it adds absolutely nothing but detracts heavily from character development.
RiME is such a good looking game, especially when you roam the island under a starry nights sky.
Visually, it is very close to The Witness in motion and there are plenty of life and movement of both the wild animals and the vegetation which makes it all the more charming. Although it is not necessary a complaint as such, the game mimics a lot of things you find during your time in Journey.
Mysterious red cloaked figure? Yes. Fixed sweeping camera angle when you come across those hieroglyphic paintings or walk up the stairs? Yes. The way the choral music swells when you reach those glowing doors? Yes. The dream-like state cutscenes that the boy finds himself in? Yes. Very similar colour coded ways throughout the island (red, white and gold)? Yes.
Perhaps it will all reveal itself as to why they share so many similarities as the end looms, however I cannot help but feel like saying that RiME is a very good Journey tribute act at the moment. I honestly think that those who have not played Journey would appreciate this more so than those who have.
So far, so good! I can't see the Switch version running or looking quite as good as this though, that's for sure.
@Peek-a-boo I'm still pretty early on, I've just done those perspective door puzzles, but I've got a few questions, did you manage to collect everything? I've noticed that at certain points you're forced to progress and you can't return to the previous area. I thought it would be more open world, or parhaps I'm missing something. I've also come across one of those hieroglyphs you mentioned, but I can't seem to activate it, or interact with it in any way.
Rime looks like a slightly better art-directed version of The Witness! In terms of graphics.
Lol gamespot wrote an article saying that Far Cry could be good if it examines the socioeconomic issues surrounding the formation of cults and that the developers will need to take into account the history of narratives featuring police protagonists and anti-state extremists: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/how-far-cry-5-could-make-a-...
I think that's how an English Lit graduate says "they should probably just copy Die Hard"
@Octane I only played the first hour or so yesterday evening, up until the first blinding bright white door moment so, I don't yet know anything about 'going back'.
Those hieroglyphs are just a storyboard; they are non-interactive, but they do light up when you approach them (press â–³ ) and offers a brief moment of pleasingly audiovisual warbling.
There seems to be collectibles involved in RiME; breaking the strange statues, finding all the toys and to collect all the various outfits too. I can see me replaying this game on a rainy day if that is the case!
@Dezzy "Lol gamespot wrote an article saying that Far Cry could be good if it examines the socioeconomic issues surrounding the formation of cults and that the developers will need to take into account the history of narratives featuring police protagonists and anti-state extremists"
Haha, no they don't. This person has apparently never played a Far Cry game.
Also, considering, well... everything in America right now, it's probably best if the devs stay far away from social commentary unless they want to stir up a massive controversy. So many toes to step on.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
@IceClimbers It can be done well, but, you know, I don't think of Far Cry when I think of nuanced sociopolitical analyses of modern American culture. And I'm assuming a AAA dev doesn't want to alienate half the country and get online smear campaigns going.
As much as possible, any reasonable or intelligent creator should avoid drawing the ire of the irrational sociopaths that have infested the toxic morass of tribal extremism that we call a society. They inevitably just get dragged down into the mud with all of the other pigs.
It also outlived both the Wii and Wii U, which is an incredible feat in itself.
For a console that was released a whole year later and at £150/€150/$200 more than Xbox 360, it is an achievement and a half that it not only passed the latter console in lifetime sales, but that its twilight years gave folks plenty of reasons to be cheerful about their next console, the PlayStation 4.
@Peek-a-boo PS+ and all are still supported, so the system is long from gone. Always amazes me how long consoles are supported in Japan. I think it was last year when the last server on PS2 was shut down!
ruh ro, I guess I better buy that replacement ps3 soon huh.

I'm a Dream Fighter. Perfume is Love, Perfume is Life.
@Ralizah Yeah social commentary is probably something to avoid right now.
It's probably something to avoid in first person shooters across the board. It's not the genre for such things. The closest you can find is something like Bioshock. As good as that is, the story feels so disconnected from the gameplay in those games. Whereas something like Half-life 2 feels so natural and cohesive.
If people want to make games about social issues, something like a JRPG or a point and click adventure is a far better genre imo.
@Octane If you think the lifespan of the PlayStation 3 is impressive, the PlayStation 2 ended its historic run, and concluded production after THIRTEEN YEARS. Production for the 'Emotion Engine' and the shell that contained it started in January 2000 and finally ended in December 2012.
What blew my mind is the number of developers that continued to produce PlayStation 2 games. Not just regional developers either. Major publishers including 2K Games, Konami, and Electronic Arts had all published sports titles for the PlayStation 2 in 2011 and 2012 respectively!
Nothing will ever replicate the astounding success of the PlayStation 2. I was too much of a blinded Nintendo fan at the time to appreciate something like that though... silly, silly me!
It also helped that Wii being underpowered added justification to release games for both. It's almost surprising that wasn't an even bigger thing back in the day. Let's be honest, in terms of home consoles, what will ever beat a release on both Wii and Ps2? That's up to like 240 million consoles! TWO HUNDRED FORTY MILLION (and 200 million around Wii's peak I think)
@Dezzy The PS4 is ahead of the PS2 in terms of sales, so if they can keep up the momentum, yeah for sure. Maybe even better than the Wii, but I think that depends on how long they're going to support the system and when the inevitable PS5 gets announced.
@Dezzy Nah, I was just thinking that if it's ahead of the PS2, it can definitely reach 100 million, maybe even better than that [the Wii]. I don't think it'll get to 150 million though, despite being ahead of the PS2. I should've worded it a little better.
