If you add the disk drive to a PS5 Slim after-the-fact, the add on will require a one-time server check for it to operate. Playstation is now unofficially an all digital platform, because the launch PS5s' are being phased out by the Slim model.
@Ralizah The question you should be asking is, how much longer will the PS5 Slim with a disk drive built in...be available for purchase? At least Sony aren't entirely all-digital like MS. But hey, they're not far away with this.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,537 games (as of December 22nd, 2025)

@Magician I assume the Disc drive package will not have this issue. And the disc systems of the future PS systems will be available as long as the physical market is strong. After all we are still getting charts that indicate mainly the physical sales and they are really good for the digital age we live in.
@Magician They're not gonna sell PS5s without a disc drive option out of the box. They're not Microsoft. A physical market actually exists for PS5 games.
You should be happy about this revision: before, someone with a digital PS5 was forever locked into the digital ecosystem. Now anyone can buy digital and upgrade to physical with an accessory.
If anything, this move improves the situation of physical games on PS5.
@Magician@Ralizah We don't know that the disc model has the disc drive attached. It could be like Joy-Cons in Switch bundles where while included, you have to attach it to the console yourself.
@Grumblevolcano Considering first-party developers are making a point of emphasizing that certain games are fully playable out of the box without updates (Spider-Man 2), it seems unlikely that they wouldn't give consumers the option to just boot up the PS5 with the disk drive already attached.
Although it's a non-issue, tbh. Everything needs to connect to the internet now. It should be expected that new consoles will need to go online at least sometimes.

I found that this is the case only for the ALL digital consoles or Xbox One/Series X. All other consoles can be booted up from the box to the main menu and then updated via USB flash drive.
It might sound silly but the Xbox does not offer that option when bought new OR after factory reset (also it needs MS account on top of that)
@Zuljaras That's still updating them. So your objection is primarily just the device itself needing to go online, not necessarily needing to update it?
I do think a system should be able to boot up and function in some basic sense without internet, to be clear.
Microsoft is definitely the furthest down the road in terms of making its hardware completely reliant on access to an internet connection.
Especially if the XSX revision leak is real and both new systems are "adorably all-digital."
@Zuljaras tbf would you ever think it's the right time for an all-digital future?
I guess they really care for all five people who still play physical games on their Xboxes. Although that does, indeed seem to conflict with the adorably all-digital future.
In many ways, modern Microsoft seems like it's fulfilling a large chunk of the vision for the brand that Mattrick was so castigated for a decade ago.

My biggest disappointment is that even if you buy a PS5 Slim with its disc drive connected in the factory, you still need to connect it to the Sony servers in order to pair it
I see zero reason behind that. It is just a disc drive.
It sounds even more idiotic since you can just install an extra SSD and the console will format it for you without the need for the Sony servers, but a disc drive is much more "serious"
Hey guys! Recently I've heavily gotten into retro gaming and have been tinkering around with my old PS3 as a result, and have come across something that has me....perplexed to put it mildly.
As far as my understanding PS3 backwards-compatibility goes, while all models can play PS1 games to some degree, only the original models of the PS3 are backwards-compatible with PS2 games. The one I have appears to be a PS3 Slim based off of the appearance of it (it's plugged into the wall in such a way where I can't check the model number so I'm kind of eyeballing it here XD) so in theory it shouldn't be able to play PS2 games, correct?
I thought this for the longest while myself, not even thinking about it all too much and planning my purchase of an original PS2 instead when, on a whim, I decided to check out the Memory Card save file feature on my PS3 in preparation for loading up some PS1 games down the line when I was greeted by this image:
If the Slim model is supposed to be incompatible with PS2 games then why is it giving me the option to make a digital PS2 memory card save? If anyone who's used a PS3 in the past could help me out here, I'd greatly appreciate it because man: I'd be over the moon if I could play PS2 games without having to fork over the cash for the system itself (though would still be fine in doing so if I have to!).
oh and because I forgot to show it, here's an example image of the PS3 I have:
I done did it, Spider Man 2 PS5 Slim has been ordered. By the weekend hopefully I'll be retiring my launch PS4 after ten years of uncommon reliability. Honestly, the best disc-based console I've ever owned.

@Fizza Whilst the slim models of the PS3 can't play physical PS2 games, there are emulated digital PS2 games on the store that are able to be played on any model of PS3 known as Playstation Classics. The internal memory cards are for save data and the like in those versions, if I recall correctly.

@Fizza On the upside though, if any of the games you want are on the shop, they'll probably be a lot cheaper to buy. They're less than £10 or $10, but I don't know about euros or anything else. Every cloud has a silver lining and all that.
