It could be that the visual issues are a result of forcing the game onto a 16GB cart without having extra downloads. If you remember back to XCX, the game filled up the Wii U disc and you had 10GB worth of optional data packs to improve it.

@Tsurii They talked a good deal about how good the controls feel in comparison to Xenoblade Wii. Other than my apprehensions about the quality of handheld mode, it seems like this game is addressing almost every major complaint I had about the original.

@Grumblevolcano Didn't the data packs just improve load times and whatnot, though? I thought that was to get around the speed limitations of the discs the Wii U was using. Besides, the game apparently looks gorgeous in docked mode.

I'm hoping Nintendo introduces an optional "boost mode" for portable play at some point. Obviously it wouldn't be ideal if you're out and about, but if you play primarily on the tablet and you have a charger nearby, it could be a great way to improve handheld performance.

@Knighty_IX I'm really sorry, but I weirdly can't find a link to the Kotaku Splitscreen podcast - not the latest one anyway. You can find it on iTunes now, but there's no updated link on the Kotaku site itself yet (they usually post something about it on the Saturday). Jason Schrier only makes a passing reference to XC2 anyway - kind of a "meh, I wouldn't bother rushing to get it" kind of thing. They haven't reviewed it yet. And he did add that he wasn't 100% sure yet anyway, as he had only played the first 15hrs or so.

Personally, I'm just excited to play the first dedicated RPG for the Switch. The fact it's a first-party AAA effort just makes it extra sweet.

Everyone's saying it's mostly the screen resolution that's reduced in handheld mode. That's not a storage issue or a memory issue. It's a GPU issue.
That is what Nintendos own hardware specs had told us the difference between docked and undocked would be. Same CPU speed and memory but just slower GPU.

Ya, it's time to get hyped. There were so many games coming out back to back that I just put this one out of sight and out of mind for so long.

We still have Resident Evil Revelations Collection on Tuesday (about 30 hours from now). But after that it's all Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

@JaxonH If that's true, and this is hitting anywhere near 720p, I'll be INCREDIBLY happy. Thanks. This gives me hope!

You know how people are. Any noticeable downgrade in the visual fidelity while in handheld mode and people act like it's the end of the world.

It's all a matter of perspective. I'm sure it takes a hit visually while undocked (what game doesn't) but it's also running on a smaller screen which helps it look better. I have yet to see a game that looked noticeably worse in handheld mode aside from crap like RIME and MXGP3. Even DOOM looked better in handheld mode than on the TV.

Wow they sound awful. Well Pyra and Rex are awful. The rest are doable

Wonder when the reviews embargo lifts on this. I'm guessing later today (monday).

Haven‘t really been hyped for this game until now that I realize it releases in like four days! I mostly blame my newly developed addiction to Stardew Valley along with the jam packed release calendar this time of year. Got the entire next week off so this should give me plenty of time to get a good headstart into the game. So? How long would you estimate it takes to fully complete the game? Because that‘s what I plan on doing.

I rewatched the "Birth of Poppy" scene and am really struck by... yes, how utterly, wonderful expressive the characters are now. In particular, Pyra flashes Tora this look of disappointment after seeing the maid clothing. Not a shocked disappointment, but more of the disappointment you feel when someone confirms your worst intuitions about them. It's a little moment that never would have worked with the generally expressionless characters in the original or the ugly doll people in XCX.

@Knighty_IX That dub kind of sucks, but I can see it sucking in a sort of endearing way. Honestly, at this point, the thing that bugs me most is that the lip movements seem more "off" in this than they do in a lot of other english dubbed Japanese games I've played.

Still going to download the Japanese voice pack, though.

@Knighty_IX Wouldn‘t expect anything less from a Xenoblade game. Slow beginnings aren‘t all bad imo as long as it introduces you into the world and makes you care about your characters and their goals, kinda like Skyward Sword did. Tutorials after 20 hours of playtime, though ... geez. Well, I doubt it‘ll be the handholdy kind of game.

Oh, yeah, gonna download the japanese VA pack. It‘s not necessarily the dub I don‘t like but moreso these battle cries whenever someone uses an ability. Already got annoying after 20 or so minutes I‘ve seen of the gameplay. Fingers crossed the japanese voices will make that more tolerable.

I'm not against doing the Japanese voice pack at all (I'm almost certain it's what I'm doing whenever I finally get to BOTW), but regardless of the quality of the dub:

1. People hate at least half of good anime dubs, so I can't trust people on this.
2. Xenoblade 1 gave me a lot of reason to want to stick with the dub
3. I'm still burned by the last hyped JRPG I was told to avoid the English dub, as the Japanese was the most fake sounding, barely mediocre acting (Bravely Default's Japanese voice acting is mostly not good, don't you dare tell me otherwise)

Life events caused me to completely forget about the game so hype only now forming. Took a small risk though in ordering with very.co.uk as was only £70 for CE but needed to pay in advance (they later dropped it further to £63! Prats!). In a surprise move, I may actually hold off playing until Christmas and make the game one of the Tree Settlers.

@kkslider5552000 I usually go for JP VA but I agree on Bravely Default's. I discovered the JP audio a little into the game and felt all charm was lost. So back to ENG it was.

@Knighty_IX I could definitely see the English voices growing on me, to be honest.

Oh god, that voice shouting "AMAZING!" and "MARVELOUS!" over and over again was hilarious. Reminds me of something out of a Japanese arcade game. Does this get removed in the English dub?
