World of Goo is one of my favorite video games of all time. This dev broke up after their first game, with one half going to make Little Inferno and programming based games and the other AFAIK going on to mobile games (which means I've never played them). The fact they're back for a sequel is something I didn't think would ever happen.
I rarely buy games day 1, or even month 1, this will be an exception. World of Goo is an utterly brilliant puzzle game with an all time great soundtrack, and proved to me the value of indie gaming. If this game is merely more of the same (which I guess it won't if it has co-op), it will be one of the best games of the year.
Just mildly concerned about the controls. I miss pointer controls so much.
Yeah, this is the big hitter of the Direct for me. They said for a long time that there wouldn't be a sequel, but the original game stayed popular, so I suppose they eventually had a rethink about that.
I wouldn't worry too much about the controls. The original game was ported to the Switch soon after it launched, and works just fine.
I was interested after the direct, but lack of pro controller support really puts a damper on things.
Besides exercise games and a few motion party games which clearly wouldn't work with pro controller (and Pokemon Let's Go which just decided to make their game worse for no good reason by not allowing a pro controller option) extremely few of the thousands of games on Switch don't allow pro controller.
Yeah I'm probably not going to play the game as much, I can kinda handle these controls...but they are irritating. I don't know why they can't use the Pro Controller's gyro...Super Mario Galaxy worked fine with it, same goes for Metroid Prime.
The other thing that bugs me because I KNOW the Switch is capable because Nintendo itself used it in ONE of their games, is mouse support via USB. I don't know why no one bothers with this.

Honestly I don't have an issue with it not supporting the Pro Controller. It's a pointer based game. I mean, I see no real reason why it couldn't work but also I see no real reason why you'd want to use it. So the omission isn't really much of a loss at all. And I don't see why it'd be a reason not to get it
With that said, I was going to pick it up but the price has given me pause. $42AU, I'll probably wait it out a bit. Especially given we're late in the Switch cycle and I'm well and truly in "clear the backlog" mode. I'll probably pick it up at some point assuming Switch BC on Switch 2 and assuming the price goes down. Or if it finds its way to PC I might get it there. But not for $42AU when I'm trying to burn down my backlog and with a bit of uncertainty about ongoing access to Switch games

They could also do bluetooth mouse support in theory. I already have a bluetooth KB/Mouse sitting on my coffee table near my TV. The hardware supports it, it's just bluetooth, so there's not really much reason why they don't. They could even expand NSO to cover some SNES and maybe even N64DD mouse games. Hell, put out an official NSO SNES themed Bluetooth optical mouse. Why not? People would buy that thing just to use it as a regular mouse
With that said.... I'm the same person who thinks they should still support the WiiMote as a controller so we could've played stuff like Skyward Sword, Switch Sports, Super Mario Galaxy with the controllers those games deserve to be played with. And I also think they should expand NSO to Wii and start selling WiiMotes again. If they can make N64 controllers again? Why not Wii?

@skywake The price has put me off for now too. I'd like to play the game but not quite that badly. Feels like the type of game that should be $30AU at most.
For what it's worth, the controls are more or less the same as those used for the Switch port of the original game, and I don't recall a lot of complaints at the time. If you've only ever played it with a mouse or a Wiimote it might take a little getting used to but I'd honestly think that it's fine.
As for the price, it's a game with plenty of content and that will probably keep you busy for far longer than a lot of Nintendo's full price releases so far this year. Yes, there are other excellent indie games selling at lower prices and, unlike those Nintendo games, it will almost certainly be discounted if you're prepared to wait for a bit.
However, I don't think it's bad value. Quite the opposite, it's one of the best games that I've played so far this year.

To be fair, it was two weeks after Switch came out; not much use of pro controllers back then. A lot of the current complaints are not that joycons are less precise than wii motes but that people don't want to swap away from their pro controllers for a game which seems like it could easily be made to work fine with pro controller.
@Matt_Barber
Just to be clear I'm not saying it's not worth the asking price. It's just more than I am willing to spend on it at this stage in the console cycle with plenty of other options available, some even in my backlog. Especially given there's still uncertainty about how the transition will play out
If it was something like $20AU? Then sure, I'd probably give it a go. And if it was day 1 of Switch 2 and they were doing something interesting like HDR then sure, I'd pay $40 even just to have another title in my library that's "Switch 2". But at $40 it's a bit much for late Switch

@FishyS There never has been a version of World of Goo playable with a conventional controller, and I'd be surprised if they'd let fifteen years pass without even giving it a try. If they were to give the Pro Controller as an option, it'd probably have to be using the gyro to point. However, it's a bit unwieldy in one hand, you don't get the option of a safety strap, and the need for re-centring already makes the Joy-Con the least desirable of the control options that the game has had.
Maybe they'll eventually patch it in if the demand is there, but I'm minded a bit of the motion control puzzles in Breath of the Wild and the contortions you've got to go through to play them with a Pro Controller. Imagine an entire game like that, and that's what you'd be in for.
@skywake Yeah, value is always going to be in the eye of the beholder. So long as you don't have a pressing desire to play it right now, I'd imagine that they'll be discounting it before too long and after few years it'll probably be one of those evergreen favorites that you can pick up for under five bucks in a sale, much like the first game is now.

tbh I only ever played botw with pro controller and the motion control puzzles seemed easy to me; it never even occurred to me they would be different with joycons. 😆 I guess you get used to what you play with.
I agree with you they probably won't add support, it's just that a sizable minority of Switch players have become non-joycon players over the years. A fair amount of people in various forums (myself included) have been saying they won't buy the game without pro controller support. It's less about what controller is better and more that this seems like a casual pick up and play for a bit and then swap to a different game kind of game and I don't want to have to change controllers for that. If that sounds extremely lazy it is because it is 😝
I must admit I have four sets of JoyCon. Two on a charger, two loose, two on the Switch itself. I rarely use them (other than portable mode obviously), the vast majority of the time I'm using the Pro Controller. So I get the sentiment

For what it's worth, I've only got a single set of Joy-Cons and three Pro Controllers. The latter almost always get used when docked, except for the games that really need Joy-Cons. I'm just a bit surprised that some people don't see this as one of those games.
I went and checked the rest of the Tomorrow Corporation games and none of them support the Pro Controller either, or indeed any other conventional controller on other devices short of using one in mouse emulation mode (it's not great) on a PC. If nothing else, they're consistent.

I mean... Pro Controller can point. It has motion controls. Pretty sure Pro Controller can do everything a single joycon can do except IR sensor (which is not used in this game). This game works with single joycons so should be able to work with pro controller. We pointed easily enough in Mario Galaxy with Pro Controller and it actually worked really well.
Honestly, if a game doesn't require IR sensor or 2 different types of motion at once with 2 joycons such as in exercise games and crazy party games, I don't see why pro controller would ever be disallowed. It feels more like one of those weird developer aesthetics like when Nintendo doesn't allow you to remap buttons easily rather than any actual technical reason.
Apologies for getting this thread totally off track... I hope everyone who is playing is having fun with the game.
I'll get back to it eventually, but yeah the controls were bothering me...T.T
I really hope the devs do something. Pro Controller does have gyro, it ain't perfect but it's 1000 times better than the joycons....
But yeah I may get back to this game again soon, ended up going back to Monster Hunter, and for some bizarre reason I decided to finally boot up my PS4 after not touching it for ages. xD
But yeah, pointing with the joycvon KINDA works, but, the sensor is also sensitive...so the cursor ends up just shaking and yeah you kinda need accuracy for this. So annoying trying to build something with the goo balls only for the cursor to shake slightly and moves a millimeter off and I end up throwing the ball off the screen. -.-
