It was a very good Direct. Especially considering the low bar of this year's E3. Especially considering the pandemic. This was pretty darn good, moreso when taken in context. They did truly have a bit of something for everyone.
@DarthNocturnal Yep. That creature's design feels very Portal-y.
I was watching a reaction and someone said that, actually. It does kind of have that vibe. The white AI robot and lonely atmosphere I think.
And ya, MH Stories 2 is definitely going under the radar. I get the game has been shown several times before but this is the first real look under the hood, and the gameplay is legitimately astonishing. It looks really good. Equally impressive as Rise, and that's saying something. Pokémon, SMT and MH Stories 2, the 3 best games of the genre all getting new entries on Switch back to back to back. All we're missing is DQM. I'm sure it'll come in due time.
I'm buying Danganronpa on your recommendation, btw. Any game that can make someone rave about it consistently over the years is at least worth a buy to check out. You can't make people fans like that and not have something special about it.

@JaxonH Yeah, looking at reactions online, people keep groaning when they get to the MH Stories 2 section of the Direct, but that seems a bit unfair. The Nintendo section on the game is an actual gameplay trailer, which is what I've been wanting for a while now. Capcom has unwisely been overexposing people to the story trailers.
I think excitement will pick back up later in the month when people get to play it for themselves. That treehouse footage looked great. It's a massive evolution from the first game, both stylistically and in terms of environmental scope. And, honestly, the story looks way more engaging as well.
RE: Danganronpa, the first game is a little rough around the edges (kinda like the first Ace Attorney, honestly), but the two sequels are two of the best visual novels ever made. Even the very first case in Danganronpa 2 rivals the length of DR1's final case. DR2 was also when the series fully nailed down its unique tonal mix of absurdist humor and horror.
The series managed to amass a pretty massive cult following in the West on the strength of a couple of PSP/Vita games, which, yeah, is actually quite impressive. One of the characters actually snuck into the Guinness Book of World Records as "the most cosplayed video game character in the world" at one point, lol.
Hopefully they also bring over Ultra Despair Girls at some point, since it also adds to the series' overall worldbuilding.
The rest of this year is gonna be really expensive. Multiple games I want every month except in August, which seems to be a dry month in general outside of NHM3.
Mario Golf, THPS1+2, Destroy all Humans, and Disgaea 6 this month. MH Stories 2, Zelda Skyward Sword HD, and Great Ace Attorney Chronicles in July. NMH3 in August. Sonic Colors Ultimate and WarioWare in September. Monkey Ball, Metroid, and Mario Party in October. SMTV and Pokemon in November. Advance Wars in December.
My wallet weeps, and that's not counting any indie titles and stuff that doesn't have a date yet.
@Ralizah
Yo, you’re gonna be glad to see this. Ys IX runs like butter. I thought it felt pretty smooth but it’s nice to see it confirmed stable, just so I don’t have to worry about any problems. It’s really impressive how good they’re able to make games look and run on hardware as meager as the Nintendo Switch. Especially given how under clocked it is? Man... They’re eeking out every last drop of juice they can from this baby.
I'm lucky as hell SMT V is coming out like a week after my birthday but the rest of 2021 is gonna be one pricey investment for me on Switch let alone other platforms like PC and PS5

CAVE’s mushihimesama(EDIT: on the US eshop too), dodonpachi daifunkatsu, and espgaluda II are all heading to Switch! Japan only for now but many of these games never left Japan officially anyway (some were region free but still in Japanese).
(Pretty much the ones I was waiting on so I am floating on air although I do hope they finish the line up)

@JaxonH, I'm more surprised (pleasantly) that a VR headset is in the top 10. I like using my PSVR from time to time, though I wasn't sure how well that sphere is doing.
Super excited for Metroid though!

Switch - Blade Strangers

I used an Oculus for the first time the other day, and frankly it was pretty darn cool. I'm still not hopping on the "future of video games" bandwagon for VR, but I can see VR having some really awesome experiences. My mind immediately went to a fully-crafted MMO or single-player RPG where your motions are exactly 1-to-1: sword swinging, casting spells, mending armor, firing a bow, etc. There are some incomplete and more primitive versions of those things right now, so it's not hard to imagine how effective it could be.
The only thing is movement. Even if you have a massive space in your house and the game supports actual movement when you literally walk around (I played a golf game that did that and it was awesome), you're always going to be limited by walls and other dangers. The point-and-move thing is fine I guess, but for me that's what most broke the immersion.
August is the only month regarding the rest of the year that isn't busy for Switch releases I'm interested in. Makes up for nothing really happening for Xbox until November assuming I'm unable to get a Series X in that time (want Flight Sim which releases in July but doubt I'd be able to get a Series X by then).
@Ralizah Not exclusive but I definitely plan to get Sonic Colours Ultimate for Switch (September 7th), also interested but not decided whether I'll buy the Hot Wheels game (September 30th). Those 2 and WarioWare aren't even including the very likely chance there's an early September Direct with shadow drops.
Life Is Strange, True Colors, Ni No Kuni 2, Diablo II Resurrected, DBZ Kakarot & Astria Ascending, @Ralizah .... There are currently quite a few 'Q3 2021' games & plenty of 'sometime this year' ones, too, so some of them could well be around then

Quick little conspiracy theory of mine! So most big switch games from the switches first year are getting sequels, Mario and rabids, botw2 splatoon 3, so my conspiracy theory (more of a wish lol) is that we are getting a Mario odyssey 2. It’s in essence the fifth year of the switch so why wouldn’t Nintendo want to go all out and make sequels for all of these fan favorite games including odyssey? Do I feel like this will happen? No! But it’s still okay to dream! (Someone take a photo of this so when it happens I can consider myself a leaker haha)
