@JaxonH yea for sure. X is shaping up to be extremely solid. Loving it just as much as I loved 7 and 9 thus far.

I still need to try out that dang demo. I keep getting side tracked lol

@JaxonH Yeah, as has been said, aside from unlocking some additional galaxies and achieving certain optional stars, you don't really NEED them. With that said, there are so many points in the game where it's painless to snag them via the touchscreen. And, of course, the docked gyro implementation is just a joy. At higher framerates, gyro feels almost as good using a mouse.

And yeah, I thought about getting God Eater 3 at that price, but with Monster Hunter so close... eh. Why fill up on fast food when I could savor a really excellent restaurant meal, you know? There's not a single thing I wanted from a MH4U follow-up that doesn't seem to be present here. In fact, if anything, it's vastly overperforming my expectations for what a Monster Hunter game on Switch could look and play like.

@rallydefault Yeah, the naming convention seems to full Final Fantasy rules so far, where new numbered entries are entirely new experiences (barring some possible multiverse weirdness like in XC2). It's why the game is Bravely Default II and not Bravely Third.

I love the gyro, I just hate recentering it every minute or so. Games where gyro simply augments aiming like Sniper Elite 4 and Doom Eternal... perfection- no issues. But games where it serves as a pointer, like Pikmin 3 and Mario Galaxy, while it works great and I vastly prefer it to analog alone, the recentering is still a pain. DualSense fixed this issue with the magnometer, but who knows if Nintendo will ever adopt such technology. They’re great at innovating (who made HD rumble first? Who integrated motion aiming first? Etc) but not so good at improving on others’ innovations or improvements on their own innovations. We all knew Sony would adopt Nintendo’s HD rumble, and yet, I don’t think any of us are confident Nintendo will adopt Sony’s magnometer, which is depressing.

In any case, I think I’ll fire it up. I’ve played enough Bravely Default 2. Since the save data doesn’t transfer, all I needed was to see what the experience was like. And I’m sold. It is the game I wanted it to be. Any further progress would just be a waste of time as I will ultimately be doing all of it over again in the main game when it releases.

Just think- we’ll be playing Monster Hunter Rise in 30 days’ time when the demo drops. Only 30 more days! Can’t wait to find a new weapon to main. Leaning toward hammer, switch axe, bow, or hunting horn.

I’ve mained long sword, dual blades, hunting horn, insect glaive, charge blade, and a small 50 hours with heavy bow gun and 50 hours with Lance, and a small 50 hours with switchaxe. But hunting horn and switchaxe have changed so much since then, they almost seem like new weapons.

@JaxonH I don't mind recentering, personally. I just instinctually hit the right shoulder bumper any time I think I'm going to be using it, and it just responds perfectly. Far quicker than moving a wiimote around until you manage to locate the pointer on the screen.

Anyway, I don't know what has been incorporated in the Dualsense controller, but it'll almost certainly be wasted outside of VR and a handful of tech demo-ey games, I imagine. Nothing is going to break the Playstation Nation of their reliance on pure dual-analog controls for their games.

I'm hoping to get to Bravely II tomorrow. The first demo was disappointing, so I want to see if the changes will make it a more pleasant experience. Honestly, I'll probably enjoy it more if it's actually the first chunk of the game and not just some weird demo divorced from the broader story.

I've mained dual blades, long swords, and hammers before, and... I'll probably stick with one of those. I'm not a big fan of the more technical weapons, as I'd rather be paying attention to the movements of the monster instead of thinking about ways to manipulate my complex sword-axe-gun thing. And, for the life of me, the insect glaive will never make sense to me. I mean, intellectually, I know what it does, but... eh.

The hybrid design of the Switch is perfect for a game like this: docked play with the Pro controller for new monsters and main story quests; handheld play with a Split Pad Pro for grinding around the house. And when I inevitably play locally with one of my friends, who is a Monster Hunter buff, it'll be on the easy to transport Switch Lite.

Not sure I'll need a new game in this series for a long, long time. Maybe I should just sell that copy of MH World I never played.

@Ralizah
It’ll certainly be wasted... on PS5, but on Steam it will perfect the experience for decades to come. I’m more interested in the technology itself than any delusions of grandeur seeing it actually be implemented on PlayStation.

The story makes a huge difference. JRPG without story is like a platformer without jumping. They’ve fixed up a bunch of stuff, too. I won’t say it’s perfect- it seems to stutter for a split second when going in or out of menus, for example. But I’m not too concerned about that.

The thing with new MH weapons is, they seem complex until you learn them properly, and with experience, they eventually become second nature. Of course, in the beginning, it does take intentional thinking to determine what you’re going to do. But that learning curve exists with anything worth its salt, really. I like to devote learning one or two weapons per game. Because it does take a lot of time to master a new weapon. But it doesn’t take as much time as you might think. A 15 minute Gaijin Hunter tutorial and another 15 minutes in the training room (we have training rooms now, ever since World), and you’d be surprised with how proficient you can become. Then it’s just a matter of takin on some quests and using the weapon. After a while you’ll get down a certain rhythm that doesn’t use all of the weapons capabilities but, at least 2/3’s. And you just roll with that until it becomes second nature. Once it does, then you revisit that tutorial and work on mastering those final few moves.

Insect glaive is tricky, but, I learned it in MH4U. Basically you pogo jump to mount with aerial damage. You send the kinsect out and hit monsters with it, which would bring back one of three colored buffs that lasted a minute. Later in the game you got a better kinsect where buffs lasted 2 min. But the idea was to get all three colored buffs at the same time, which activated hyper speed, hyper power, and whatever the white one did, and you got insane combos that did crazy damage. It had a wicked endless combo back in MH4U. That’s the weapon in a nutshell. Very fun to use if you learn it properly.

I’ve never been one for ranged weapons, but now that we don’t need separate gunner armor (as of World, you simply take a defense boost for melee weapons and an elemental boost instead if using ranged, so it accomplished a similar goal of lower defense when using ranged without requiring separate armor) and now that there’s gyro aiming, and now that the weapons are reworked, I’d really like to learn bow.

And ya. Monster Hunter Rise is a game I’ll be playing for years to come. Being on Switch, where you can play on the TV with amazing graphics or handheld (also with amazing graphics) for portable MH with local wireless MP, or in tabletop mode at work with detached controllers in the grip... it’s the last MH game I’ll ever need (who am I kidding, I’ll still play all future MH titles, but it doesn’t mean I’ll ever stop playing this one)

@Ralizah We all knew as soon as Microsoft showed off the Series X controller to be nothing more than a XB1 controller with a share button back in December 2019 that PS5 games wouldn't take gyro seriously. Give it a few years and PS5 games will probably stop getting haptic feedback added outside of VR and tech demo type games too.

Don't get me wrong. I wholeheartedly believe a TV-only variant of the Switch will be offered by Nintendo at some point in time. However, that TV-only variant will only be as powerful as the current Switch V2. Anyone suggesting that TV-only variant would be the only form factor for the Switch V3/Switch Pro/Switch Successor is a guess that's off the mark.

P.S. [OT] So I've been playing Fairy Tail for around fifteen hours and now I'm bored. Some nonsensical gibberish story about time travelling to open these eclipse doors to save humanity. Syke, those doors should've stayed closed. Dragons rule, bruh!

Zzzzzzzzzzz. On to the next game.

Hajimari no Kiseki is coming to Switch.

It's being ported by the same "Clouded Leopard Entertainment" that is handling Cold Steel 1 and 2 and the Crossbell games.

Too bad they only seem to operate in Asia. We need a company to publish these ports in the West.

Is that the latest entry in the overall series, @Ralizah....? If so, that'd be more likely to come over to the West & there shouldn't be the same issues with NISA doing that there seem to be for ToCS 1 & 2

@Ralizah
That’s ok. The fact they’re being made for Switch is half the battle.
Now, it’ll be that much easier for NIS or XSEED or whoever to cut a deal for a western release, which would really only need the already-finished translations put in the Switch version for Cold Steel 1 and 2.

Man... 2021 can’t come soon enough:

The best part is, only two of these games are 1st party. Meaning we still have at least half a dozen other Nintendo exclusives to look forward to. Which, Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 will likely be one of them. We could also see Bayonetta 3 next year. Metroid Prime 4 is still 2 years away, at least, but we could see the trilogy as we near its release, or a new 2D Metroid.

I think 3rd party exclusives and 1st party ports/remasters/remakes will carry 2021. 3rd parties tend to crowd around times where not much is happening on the 1st party front (e.g. November 2017, 2nd half of 2018, 1st half of 2019, 2020). The 2nd half of 2018 especially comes to mind regarding the upcoming lineup.

@JaxonH Throw in Rune Factory 5, which is another ambitious looking exclusive.

2021 is going to be a great time to be a Switch owner.

That's a really good list so far. I expect Nintendo to announce and release their 1st party titles like they did with Paper Mario, 3D All-Stars and Hyrule Warriors, so yeah, we'll also be getting quick releases of Nintendo games sprinkled in.

I don’t expect every month to match February, but even with just the games we know about combined with Nintendo’s normal output (and the normal amount of 3rd party ports on top of it all), it’s gonna be a tent pole year.

@JaxonH Silksong and New Pokemon Snap don't have release years yet. If you're including games you think will be 2021 but not confirmed to be 2021, I think Hitman 3 despite being a cloud version belongs in the list. It's not an exclusive but it's a big release, also the mess regarding really poor performance on PS4/XB1 releases this holiday (e.g. Cyberpunk) makes me think PS4/XB1 will be dropped sooner rather than later for 3rd party releases in favour of cloud solutions (like xCloud using Series X server blades on XB1).
