@Grumblevolcano I mean, that's assuming Nintendo's going to announce more than 1 or 2 additional games over the whole of next year. With everything we already know about, they could ride the curttails of 3rd party exclusives all year without any issue.

Though, Zelda at TGA would be perfect timing, I was struggling to figured out when they could potentially do that considering the anniversary is in February. So who knows? I'm more on board with TGA + a late March/early April direct personally though. Maybe not even until May or June (assuming we have E3 at all and Nintendo doesn't decide to skip having a direct since no E3.)

@Magician if everything that i seeying is pointing up to 2021/2022 be the best year for Switch, i will be extremely hyped, i believe this games is gonna be the major releases of Nintendo for 2021: Super Mario 3D World+Bowser Fury, a 2D Metroid game that continues the Metroid Fusion history, Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD, Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime Trilogy HD, Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2, New Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Unite, Pokémon Let's Go Johto or a remake of Pokémon Diamond e Pearl, Monolift Soft new game, Super Mario Odyssey 2, WarioWare or a Wario Land(please be aware some of the game i mentioned is just speculation of my part), sorry i got i bit carried over and put games that i want Nintendo to release, if at least Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2, Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime Trilogy HD and a 2D Metroid game that continues the Metroid Fusion history release on Switch in 2021(this will make 2021 perfect for me and my wallet will hate me for all eternity, since i want to play all this games i mentioned, in Brazil where i live, games are very expensive, around R$350 to R$600).

@link3710 I think it comes down to the rumoured new Switch revision. Nowadays Nintendo fully reveals hardware 2 months before launch so if it launches with MH Rise at the end of March then January reveal seems likely. If the rumours turn out to be false (i.e. no new Switch revision ends up happening) or it's releasing later on the year then I could see Direct happening later and perhaps January or February having a Partner Showcase.

@Grumblevolcano That's fair. But I'm trying to remember, has hardware ever been revealed during a direct? I don't think it has.

@link3710 The only instances that happened were when the 3DS XL was revealed in an August 2012 Direct and the New 3DS/XL were jointly revealed alongside Xenoblade Chronicles 3D in a Japan-only 3DS Direct in August 2014.

@TheFrenchiestFry There was a Nintendo Direct for North America (in January 2015) that showed the New 3DS XL, too.

Welp okay, that's pretty convincing since those are the most similar hardware releases to a potential Switch revision.

TheFrenchiestFry

@MarioLover92 Well that was announcing it for the West. The one in August 2014 actually unveiled the consoles' existences.

@TheFrenchiestFry Ah okay that makes sense. I remember reading that it came out in Japan in 2014. Kinda odd that it was officially announced in early 2015 after the Japanese release, but I digress.

New 3DS was what I had in mind, the system had actual improvements so it got put in a Direct alongside games which took advantage of those improvements (e.g. XC3D was exclusive, MH4U took advantage of the power boost and the small stick for camera controls, MM3D used the small stick for camera controls, etc.).

So a similar thing may happen for a new Switch revision. Main series Monster Hunter always takes advantage of new hardware so Monster Hunter Rise would be alongside it, if DOOM Eternal turns out to be a native port (rather than cloud version) it would likely be alongside the new hardware, etc.

Nintendo selling 12.53m Switches in six months is pretty bonkers. Those June to September numbers are better than I expected. Looks like the Switch is set to shatter the record of 21m Switches sold last fiscal year and land somewhere around 24m (12.53m + 9m October through December + 3m January through March).

80m Switches sold by the end of March, in just four years? Just...bananas.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,536 games (as of December 14th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)

Nintendo spread it latest financial results, Switch now sold 67.30 milions consoles and Animal Crossing New Horizons is now at 26.04 milions units sold(in this Holiday season or in end of the first half of 2021, Animal Crossing New Horizons is gonna detrohne Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and become the highest selling Switch game).

@Magician All because of the pandemic. Without that the sales wouldn't have been as strong. So many people were using their stimulus money to try new things, and many non-gamers broke into that fold with the Switch as it's the most user friendly and easily accessible system right now.

Well...I wouldn't say it's all because of the pandemic, though it was certainly a factor. Last year the Switch beat the record set by the PS2 for selling the most consoles in a fiscal year. Now the pandemic and the heightened popularity of Animal Crossing is boosting the Switch further than last year's sales figures.

Exactly right. Switch was already on a tear, and this year was always going to be its biggest yet. The shutdowns just gave it that extra oomph it needed to go from crazy sales to world domination.

Most Hyped 2021 Titles disregarding Zelda BotW 2, Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3, since they're not yet confirmed for 2021.

1 Monster Hunter Rise
2 Shin Megami Tensei V
3 Monster Hunter Stories 2
4 Bravely Default 2
5 Trails of Cold Steel IV
6 YS IX: Monstrum Nox
7 Super Mario 3D World
8 DOOM Eternal
9 Shin Megami Tensei III HD
10 No More Heroes 3

Cant really think of anything I'm crazy excited for on other consoles for next year.

For confirmed/scheduled 2021 titles...

1) Shin Megami Tensei V
2) Ys IX: Monstrum Nox
3) Monster Hunter Rise
4) Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD (would've been higher, but it sounds like a lazy port, which hurts it a bit for me)
5) Horizon Forbidden West (maybe; depends how the game performs on PS4, because I won't have a PS5 by the time it launches)

I'll probably get SM3DW, but I can't say I'm hyped for it. Bravely 2 is a big, fat MAYBE, since the demo disappointed me.

List could change, as I expect BotW2 to release next year, and that would vault it up to second place. Cyberpunk 2077 could also possibly be delayed again into next year, and that would go into the top five as well. Persona 5 Strikers is probably 2021-bound, and that'd be high up there for me as well.

NMH3, Monster Hunter Stories 2, and Rune Factory 5 are entirely dependent on whether I get around to previous games in those series (NMH 1 + 2, Monster Hunter Stories, and Rune Factory 4, to be precise).

I'm particularly excited for Nocturne because outside of owning it digitally on PS3 my moments of exposure to it were mostly through emulation and this was when I was still semi-new to MegaTen, so I'm happy that not only to I get to actually fully complete it through official means for the first time, but also own it physically as well. I can't wait to put this in my MegaTen game collection next to stuff like SMTIV, SJ Redux, Soul Hackers, Devil Survivor 1/2 and my Persona stuff.

The music thing is a bummer but apart from that the game looks significantly cleaned up otherwise, and basing it off Maniax Chronicle was something I flat out didn't expect.

@TheFrenchiestFry

I've lost some of my hype for the western release of SMT III HD. A Mega Ten Youtuber "Nyarly" put up an opinion video stating how the game feels like a bare-minimum port job. A missed opportunity to correct some negatives from the old game. I'll still be buying a copy on day one, but if the west gets a collectors edition I'll skip it in favor of a standard copy.

@Giancarlothomaz

FE:3H becoming the best selling entry in the series is no surprise considering the popularity of the Switch as a platform. It's a common story on Switch. BotW became the best selling entry in the Zelda series. AC:NH became the best selling entry in the Animal Crossing series. And how many indie games have "sold best" on Switch?

And yet so many third party publishers choose to disregard the Switch gold rush by being slow to port their older games to the platform.

Mind boggling.

But not Rebellion. They've put Sniper Elite v2, Sniper Elite 3 and Zombie Army Trilogy on Switch, all 3 with gyro aiming, peak resolution and performance, and the promised land of Sniper Elite 4 is releasing in about a week. The game people said would "never come" because it's "too demanding". And yet it looks fantastic, again has gyro aiming, and is being offered at a discount of nearly $30 on the eShop if you preorder.

Respect. I'll be there day one to support Rebellion and their excellent sniper games. Sniping with gyro is crazy fun.

Also, glad to see Fire Emblem finally break 3m sold. Here's to hoping it hits 4m by the end of this generation.
