That's actually a fair question. But my answer would be that the surprise isnt lost, its just transferred. Instead of being surprised at the time of announcement, we're surprised at the time of the leak. So to me, theres no difference.

Nonetheless I wont fault you if that's how you feel. Though I dont think that warrants hatred toward any individual.

Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced

Will be waiting a long time since the game isnt coming out.

That said, if you think using one false leak from an untrustworthy source disproves the legitimacy of 10 other proven leaks from credible sources, like some kind of "evergreen proof" leaks can never be trusted, I'd advise you to go back to the drawing board and reconsider the steps in the logic that led you to such an errant conclusion.

Some "leaked" games turn out to be real. Others don't. How many "reliable leakers" have drummed up expectations for a project, only for it to not be revealed or be something else entirely?

The best approach is to stay neutral until something is officially confirmed.

And yeah, I don't feel sorry for leakers at all. Play with fire, get burned, and all that. Companies very specifically reveal projects when they're ready, and leaking it beforehand can just give people the wrong impression, or even lead to anger when projects are canceled or delayed that were never officially announced.

@Slowdive That's fair it doesn't. But that doesn''t mean that leakers are contributing in any positive way either.

@JaxonH I don't have hatred toward any particular leaker, I have hatred toward the existence of leakers as a concept. Hating people individually would be a mess, yeah.

How one feels about the morality of leaking is an entirely separate discussion.

This is about objective probability analysis. Even reliable leakers have been wrong, but statistically, credible leakers are right an overwhelming majority of the time. If they're not, then they're not a credible leaker and what they say should not be trusted.

Evaluating the likelihood of a leak literally comes down to the person's batting average. If they're 4 for 5, that's an 80% probability anything they leak will pan out. We dont lend our ears to credible leakers because they're ALWAYS right, we do so because they're USUALLY right. It's simple math. Ignore those objective probabilities at your own peril.

I would also point out that, perhaps some leakers do it for their own satisfaction but most of the good ones do it for our satisfaction. Because we like knowing what's coming, especially when Nintendo has failed at communicating and leaves us in the dark for long stretches of time.

Most leakers get harassed, insulted, and run out of forums due to the perennial skeptics mocking everything they say, clinging to any and every detail that's not 100% right and using it as a club to bludgeon them with. From what I've seen, leakers make a HUGE sacrifice to get us this info, and tolerate huge amounts of aggression in the process. They're treated like crap but they put up with it because of the people like me that appreciate them sharing info.

Do you know why King Zell quit leaking? People nitpicking any little thing that didnt pan out exactly as described and using that to be hostile toward them. Do you know why Emily Rogers quit leaking? Same reason. It's always the same story. We get a credible leaker, who tries to share info to help us out because we hate being left in the dark, and they get harassed to no end until they finally say screw it, I'm done.

So I struggle to buy in to the notion they do it for themselves. Because all it ever brings them is grief.

I'm constantly baffled by how people actually want to have surprises spoiled by leaks. I think everyone who follows Nintendo news had roughly the same reaction to the 3D All Stars collection today:

And there it is. Mario 3D All Stars and Mario 3D World. Can finally put this to rest.

Whereas if we had no idea it was coming it would have been an amazing reveal, even for people like me with no intention of actually buying the thing.

Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

I dont have you on ignore.

@Dogorilla
Well, because I already had that "amazing reveal" reaction last month when it was first leaked.

So it's not that that "amazing reveal reaction" is lost, it just occurred on a different day. I knew the leaker was credible and that it could be taken to the bank. But now I also got a 2nd jolt of excitement seeing it announced (since there's always the possibility of leaks not panning out, regardless of how credible they are).

So in totality, I got a higher sum reaction than I would have had it not been leaked.

Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)

Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)

Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)

Dogorilla

@JaxonH Fair enough but personally I get absolutely no excitement from just being told that a game might be coming out at some point (depending on whether the leaker is right or not).

Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

@Slowdive
No worries. I actually cant recall back then but, people can and do change. That's a good thing. I know I used to be a lot more emotional in my posts here years ago. Then I changed. So I can relate.

Eh, emotions sure are running high today. Personally, I neither defend nor condone leakers and their information. They're the lynchpin for interesting discussions within the hobby that I love. Just keep in mind that nothing is set in stone until it's in the consumer's hands.

@JaxonH People like the grief though. They're attention seekers, they don't care if it's good or bad, they just want eyes on them.

Anyways, I will never, ever, interact with a leaker both because I don't believe in feeding their attention-seeking mindset, but also because yeah, some of the stuff people say to them is really horrible. But I think these are the sort of people who are so desperate for attention they'll do absolutely anything, even if it ends up making them feel worse in the end.

But I genuinely doubt many, if any leakers actually care about informing the public. If it was something important perhaps, or something that wouldn't come to light otherwise again okay, but these are video games. Like, if you're going to leak, leak stuff like the Ocarina of Time source code, or stories about Sunshine's development or something that won't otherwise see the light of day and helps maintain gaming history.

@Slowdive Agreed on it being hopeless. But nope, no plans to get over it. Why should I? I could go my entire life without hearing anything from or about insiders and being perfectly happy about it. I've never, ever had a good experience with leakers in the 20+ years I've been following the games industry, don't know what would change that.

Not sure which thread to post this in...are the Mario badges only available in the US? I click on the mission and it say it's not available in my region. I also wanted one of the Mario splatfest shirts.

I do have to agree with Slowpoke that you have a misconception about insiders. I guarantee you Zell was not "seeking attention". They even made an alias when sharing so sites wouldn't report on what they said. Idk what kind of leakers you're talking about, but that's the farthest thing from the truth for the good ones. Ya, people like Sabi were attention seeking, and if that's your only impression of what a leaker is, maybe I could understand the misconception. But if youd read the forums I'd read you would never make such a claim. They do everything they can to AVOID attention. They share because of the people who constantly beg them to divulge info.

Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)

@Slowdive I will say one last thing, solely because you clearly still have a major misconception about me. I don't think all leaks are false. In fact, I've been claiming the 2D Metroid / Paper Mario one is true all year if you look back at my posts. The factual nature of leaks is completely separate from my opinion on leakers themselves. All I meant was that I won't blindly trust 'the next big leak' whatever it is, just because everyone agrees on it. I'll see what it is and make my decision then.

@JaxonH I'll be honest, I have never, and will never read what a leaker says directly outside of screenshots. I absolutely don't want to contribute to people thinking it's okay to leak. So sure, that might be true. Doesn't mean I have to like what King Zell does. Good on him for stopping though.

I don't understand. Leaks happen. Don't come to places like this if they're going to upset you so much. I know that may be upsetting to hear and you wanna go to the places you wanna go, but that's life. If I love pizza but I'm allergic to cheese, I'd have to stop eating pizza, not insist that every pizza place in my town close down. If exposing yourself to leaks is harming your mental health, you need to avoid it instead of asking everyone else to stop it.
