I don’t blame people for it though. A lot of people take great pleasure in showing support to get other games they want. And I think that’s fine.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, I don’t personally think it comes from any precedent. I think it just comes from common sense of success breeds success, and if a game does well, it definitely has the potential to increase chances of more games coming from a certain company. One need look no further than YS VIII outselling all other versions on Switch, and now we have YS IX, Trails of Cold Steel III and Trails of Cold Steel IV on or coming to Switch. It’s not a guarantee, but sometimes it’s the best people have to work with.

But ya, I’ve seen a few devs do that. Particularly Bandai Namco with Dragonball Fighter Z when Xenoverse 2 hit. But I don’t see that often

That actually makes sense, though. Ys VIII did well, so Ys IX is coming. Trails of Cold Steel....also RPGs, so within the same genre that they know is selling well. There's an easy correlation there and an easy connection to make for fans that want more. If I want more Ys, I'm going to buy Ys. And they see Ys is an RPG and it sells well, so they try a different RPG as well.
The unrelated ones are the ones that don't make sense from either viewpoint, to me at least. Even if I wanted Persona, I would never equate buying a completely unrelated game in a different genre as a means of supporting that, even from the same developer. Much like I wouldn't equate buying Animal Crossing as a means to show Nintendo I want a new F-Zero. But, the sales from Animal Crossing could fund a new F-Zero, or it could also fund Donkey Kong Jr. Math 2 for what all the sales of Animal Crossing tell them about for games outside of AC and AC type games.

Clearly it’s more pertinent if genres are related, but even if they’re not, even if they’re complete opposites, it can still correlate. Software sales tend to do well across the board. And game sales across platforms also tend to correlate.

So if Game 1 does 80% on Platform A as Platform B, then Game 2 will likely do similar on Platform A vs B. It’s not a perfect science but generally speaking you do see that across platforms regardless of genre. So success of one game absolutely can predict success of a completely unrelated game. Because game sales typically have more to do with the fan base as a whole and the hardware sales as a whole and the software attach ratio as a whole. So if you’re seeing 80% of the performance you’d see on another platform chances are you’re going to see that same 80% regardless of what you put on the system. Some genres might do a little better, some a little worse, and the margin of error is likely fairly generous (hence why it’s not a guarantee) but if you looked at it statistically with regression analysis I’m willing to bet you’d get a pretty high R-squared. And that’s what it’s all about. Playing the odds. Nobody can predict the future but if you base your decisions on statistical probabilities you can make sure that you come out ahead more times than not.

Again, is not a guarantee. There’s always exceptions, but large data analysis like this does show macro trends. It’s why we see games on switch selling better than Wii U or 3DS across the board, on average, regardless of genre. We also see 3rd party games selling better, on average, as well. And if one had the numbers, you could calculate how much better, % wise, on average. I don’t know what that number is but it does exist. A similar multiplier will exist for any comparison to another platform. For Atlus, Catherine will be a legitimate indicator, % wise, of what to expect from other games (although being a late port will affect outcome, most games are late ports so it actually works in favor of holding that variable constant). Combined with Tokyo Mirage Sessions and how well it did compared to Wii U, % wise, one could calculate a reasonable estimate of what to expect for other games, % wise, compared to other platforms.

But yes, clearly, the more similar the games are, the more closely correlated one can expect the comparisons to be. Even so, with proper ANOVA these companies could analyze across different categorical genres on different categorical platforms, but I doubt anyone is doing that aside from EA, Activision, Take-Two, etc. The largest companies who have well-trailed quality engineers who know how to analyze data properly. For the rest, it’s just going to come down to their gut. And their gut is going to come down to performance of certain games on a system compared to other systems.

I think a lot of Japanese publisher do the "if the base game sold well do the sequel" model. I think a lot of western publishers do the "if fifa '96 sells well give you dragon age (snicker) "approach.

Capcom just does whatever TF it is capcom does though. And atlus/Sega i swear are playing some kind of metagame with us. They keep teasing they'll give us persona. Then we get there spinoff sequel. Then we get Catherine. Someone in the comments summarized that best as "playing qbert as a half sheep man". And still no persona or smtv.

I'll be honest, I kinda now want EA to re-release Fifa 96 and say if it sells well they'll bring out a Dragon Age game. Just for the sheer absurdity of it.

Atlus has always been a weird company in that respect; They chose a platform for the series and they'll be done with.

Just as Persona mainline series hasn't jumped ship to either Nintendo or Xbox, everything remotely linked to the Shin Megami Tensei series stayed on Nintendo platforms after SMT III Nocturne on PS2. Atlus has not released a lot on Switch, but if you take a look at DS/3DS they released like Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey (2x), Soul Hackers, Devil Survior (Overclocked), Devil Survior 2, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Apocalypse have all been released on Nintendo hardware and stayed there for now.

... ... ...

You know what, fudge Persona, where in the chaos is SMT V? That's what I desperately need.

I willI did this the most on the Wii and DS, and it mostly worked out really well for me (including 3 of the best games I've ever played in one year, that sadly combined sold less than a million).

@kkslider5552000 Don't dangle that sort of tease in front of me. WHAT WERE THE GAMES!?!?

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

@Sadist

SMT V is in development purgatory. The official details page has been delisted from Nintendo's website. But Atlus pr insist that the game isn't cancelled. So it's probably a long ways out yet, even though it was announced back in 2017.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,536 games (as of December 14th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)

SMTV, Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 are the main 3 Switch games announced too early. I'd argue BotW 2 was also announced too early but on the other hand it was probably announced to alleviate concerns that Switch wasn't getting big games after Animal Crossing.

Kinda hard to say that until we know when it's releasing.

If it releases like March 2021, I think the announcement would've been fine. But if it's not until Christmas 2021, then yes that would've been a bit too long.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Apparently, voice actors for Breath of the Wild 2 revealed they'd finished their work .... Which suggests that may be nearer release than expected but I guess there could still be plenty to do, so don't get too hopeful

Nah, not interested with BOTW 2.

@BruceCM I read that. But couldn't they technically get all the voice acting done ahead of everything else? Up until covid, I believed it was coming holiday of 2020. So maybe next year, unfortunately.

Yeah, it's hard to say just how much work is left, @NintendoByNature .... But it's definitely progress! I always thought spring or summer next year, so it seems on track & maybe earlier Always best to err on the side of caution with such, so you're not disappointed when it's longer & you're delighted if it is sooner instead Thought it was worth sharing, anyway
