Well that makes this more of a happy news then, glad to hear it.

Japanese. There is no English option for 99% of JP games.

Just wanted to get a feel for it. Just dont understand the dialog, but that's no big deal to just feel out the game.

Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced

@Grumblevolcano "The physical version is getting a cartridge" In other news, your water bottle now comes with water!

Sorry. I am not one of the digital haters, but I do think the idea of buying a box with a download code is just silly. If I'm gonna download a game, I'm just getting it from the eshop with my balance.

@JaxonH I've bought like 80% of my 100+ game Switch library in Japan. The only one that doesn't support English is Splatoon 2. A sizable number of games don't support English, but no where close to 99% dude.

I prefer physical media when it comes to games, but I have nothing against digital. I do agree that the boxes that just come with a code seem like a waste of plastic, though.

Currently playing: Pokemon Scarlet DLC, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch)

Speaking of physical media, I got Wolfenstein youngblood and was reminded that it is an empty box with a code. Which is lame. The second lame part is having to download the game twice since the physical copy is still digital.

I'd say 75% of Japanese physical releases don't support English. A majority of those that do are from the back catalogue of Capcom and Square Enix. But there is a slew of visual novels that will never see the light of day in the west. Japan loves that genre as much as the west loves open world games.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,536 games (as of December 14th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)

@Magician
I own pretty much every single JP game that supports EN, as an avid physical importer. And there's several dozen of them in total, but out of what... 3000 or 4000 games? It's a very small percentage.

I'd even grant maybe 100 exist in the ether, from various other companies but that's still less than 5%.

Seems to me that niche visual novels aren't that popular in JP nowadays as they've become more and more westernized. In fact, I'm confident those games would actually do better in the west, if they ever bothered to release them here.

@JaxonH problem with that tend to be that people don't think they deserve their high prices, and VN translators have one of the lowest wage given for translator. Can even be as low as 1-4 cent per character

Anti-Matter

Better start to learn basic Hiragana and Katakana letters if we are really like the game but still on the fence due to language barrier.

It's not that easy... I have started studying Japanese and even after a year or so I'm still pretty slow and took me forever to read things (not counting the translating to English part)

Heavyarms55

@Magician It's a larger percentage than that. I live here and have over 80 games on Switch bought here or on the Japanese eshop and all but one of them support English. Nearly all major releases do with Splatoon 2 being probably the most notable major release that did not. Games released here that do not support English are usually VNs and JRPGs that get released in Japan prior to a global release - if they ever see a global release at all.

Just saw more gameplay for Void Terrarium, I seriously hope that NISA will localize this one since they localize the previous 2 games like Htol#Niq and Rose in the Twilight. ;-----;

Did anyone take part in that Tetris 99 grand prix 11 where you could win 999 gold points? I only got 1 ticket and won 999 gold points(£10). Bought Doom 3 with it. Anyone else win?

Destiny, justice and retribrution will be mine.

Anti-Matter

@darkfenrir
I can read and write Hiragana and Katakana letters, though sometimes i forgot some letters when i have to write. 😅
But if Kanji letters.... It's different story.
Only a few Kanji letters i recognized in both Kunyomi and Onyomi, the majority of Kanji letters were like a Great Wall of Wakarimasen. (Wakarimasen = Don't know) 😣

@Anti-Matter Able to read those =/= able to understand what is being said, which is the important part. Besides while learning a whole new language is good, not everyone wants to spend the time to do that...

Ryu_Niiyama

Atlus needs to announce what else they are bringing to the Switch cuz the are asking Japanese players if they want ports (including Persona). All they are doing is sending mixed messages.

Taiko is good for the soul, Hoisa!
Japanese NNID:RyuNiiyamajp
Team Cupcake! 11/15/14
Team Spree! 4/17/19
I'm a Dream Fighter. Perfume is Love, Perfume is Life.

Ralizah

Atlus always sends out surveys asking if people want ports on other systems.

If a lot of people indicate they want Persona 5 on Switch, maybe we'll get a port of the eventual ice skating spinoff.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

Truly? Very cool. And here I thought I was the only staunch collector of Japanese physical releases on this site. I thought I had most of the Japanese physical releases that support English, but I don't believe I have 80. I'd have to check to see what I have. Maybe around 50 if I were to guess.

I'd appreciate it if you provided a list sometime, if isn't too much trouble.

I'm curious if I missed something.

Edit: P.S. - As I think about it, your collection probably includes several common Switch releases. Mario Odyssey, Zelda: BotW, etc? That might explain it. If a game is widely available across North America or Europe I usually don't bother to import a Japanese copy.

Played a little of the Persona 5 Scramble demo on a Japanese Switch account. The text boxes, music, locations, and general presentation are almost identical to the standard P5. At times I forgot I was playing a spin-off game. Really bizarre seeing it all on Switch.
