@NEStalgia Yeah definitely. Games like civ VI and xcom 2 are best with a mouse. They always feels iffy and cumbersome sadly. Those kind of games are my kind of jam really. And on that note, the new free XCOM DLC is out, bye!
@Therad I imagine CIv6 will suport the touch screen which really solves the mouse problem. It's still an incredibly limited market though compared to mainstream console games. As long as 2k has their sales expectations well grounded it'll be a success, but it won't be showing up on charts.
@NEStalgia I think Microsoft's going to have some tricks up their sleeves regarding X018. One of which being Civ VI with keyboard + mouse support for XB1 launching same day as the Switch version. Play Anywhere has been about bringing XB1 games to PC but with keyboard + mouse support coming to XB1, I think we'll finally see the reverse (bringing PC games to XB1).
Will this have an effect on the Switch? Maybe, mouse + keyboard vs. portability will be an interesting one
@Grumblevolcano Maybe, but I don't see that really shifting much of anything. Keyboard + mouse is one of those (to quote Reggie (gag)) "fan-forward" things that I don't understand why consoles haven't supported it for the past decade plus. But I don't see that making any kind of impact at all. Who does that appeal to exactly? Console gamers buy consoles because they like the convenience and the comfort of couch play and aren't going to be sold on sitting there with a keyboard in their lap and balancing a board on the arm of a chair to use with a mouse arm, and likely don't care about stat-heavy games like Civ, RTS's etc. PC gamers are already playing on the master hardware and will have no interest in becoming a console peasant to play the games they're already playing on better hardware just because they can use a keyboard now. So who actually cares about keyb+mouse on a console? People like me that used to be PC gamers but decided to simplify and cost cut but would love to get superior shooter controls back without the cost and hassle of PC. But I'm not a very large market
Ultimately the Switch version wins there. XBox owners probably aren't super into Civ and Starcraft, or playing Destiny with a keyboard. PC gamers aren't going to buy an XBox to keep playing Civ and Starcraft and Destiny on worse hardware. But PC gamers may want to buy a Switch to keep playing PC games away from the PC. Civ on the go is a PC gamer's dream. A weak PC with an X on it that sits next to heir PC isn't
@NEStalgia I guess my PS4 is more capable than my laptop at the moment, so I would buy a RTS on console if it had keyboard and mouse support. So I guess there are some people like me. I don't really care about most RTS games though, so I don't feel like I'm missing out. But if it was a game I wanted to play? Sure, why not? Could be a bit of a hassle to move the console around the house though... So on second thought, I don't really care
@Octane Yeah, laptop-only PC owners really aren't part of the whole gaming-scene unless you have an excessively powerful laptop (Weirdly the Microsoft Store keeps telling me all my Play Anywhere games are supported on my device when I use my Surface Pro.....I keep thinking how freaking bad is Horizon 4 going to run on a Surface Pro? I'm not even tempted to try it (nor do I have the onboard storage for it.)
But I'm not sure non-gaming-pc gamers are really the market for keyb/mouse games. Yeah we're that small group, and like you said once you think about the hassle, it gets less interesting. I'm super grateful they're including it, it should have been done ages ago, but I don't see it shifting players around or really opening new markets for games to sell in....the two camps don't have much reason to cross over in meaningful numbers. Unlike Switch that's "pretty good gaming on the go" even for PC Master Race players.
I've used a USB keyboard with my xbox a few times, but that's mainly for sending messages and when playing an MMO. Having to put down the controller to type is a bit of a pain. And I consider those chat pads to be stupid, and the buttons are way too freaking small. That said, the idea of using a mouse and keyboard to play a console game seems kind of silly to me. I mean, sure the mouse provides technically superior aiming over a controller in a fps. On the other hand, using a mouse to aim also means you can have your aimed ruined by things like a sneeze or being startled.
@NEStalgia We don't know how Civ VI will work in docked mode, if it can work in docked mode with normal controls then a potential XB1 version would also work with normal controls. Just the case of many people who buy it may want to play with mouse + keyboard.
@EvilLucario 3DS didn't have many revisions. They had the new SKU for a larger screen in the XL, and of course the New models 4 years later, but I think I may recall a "quiet" revision where my later (Midnight Purple) OG model had a different feel in some components than my launch day Cosmo Black. (I loved that little Purple one....it felt so good to use for some reason where the Cosmo felt kind of "loose." The XLs felt like garbage in contrast.
Hmm.......yes, keyboard and mouse, along with the demand for headphones, yet another reason for Nintendo to unbrick the Bluetooth system on the Switch....
Imagine how much further the Switch could be expanded by allowing use of keyboard and mouse, games could take a whole expanded set of directions, especially in the arena of social gaming
perhaps the NS-Pro people want so bad will add those capabilities, it would help to keep Nintendo as an equal competitor with newer PS & XB systems to come
"If failure is the greatest teacher, how come we are not the most superior beings in the universe ???"
@Qwertyninty They're both great. Overcooked is a really good and fun co-op game that gets a bit intense, so I'd recommend that one if you're looking for something to play with others.
@IceClimbers yeah I know they both are great. I think I will go with overcooked since I have never played it before. I have played art of balance though.
@jhewitt3476 The only problem with supporting a keyboard and mouse is you lose control of your ecosystem, and once you start getting peripheral variance, you start picking up the problems PC has which is why people buy console to begin with.
Sony doesn't do it, and I'm not convinced they will. They support it for typing, I believe. So did WiiU. There's also the issue that the game controls in ways unintended when you open it up to any PC peripheral which makes testing problematic, and makes mixed players in multiplayer impossible in somthing like shooters so you fragment the online base of which is small on Nintendo already.
For MS, they're pushing Windows/XBox cross compatibility more and more, so turning XBox into a little PC is really their end goal anyway....no big loss for any of those issues for them and a lot of opportunity for more closely tying the products, especially as they head into streaming deeper.
@NEStalgia It's not much different from the crazy amount of peripheral variety for Smash. Like the GC has been around for 17 years now yet the GC controller is still by far the most popular way to play Smash.
