@Knuckles-Fajita That review of Ys VIII you wrote was a pleasant read. You were so positive and enthusiastic about it! There's a very pretty smile underneath that grumpy exterior, Mr. Fajita.

@Ralizah When I'm doing indie impressions pieces or reviews, I tend to be a lot more articulate with how I write. The piece I did on Tiny Hands Adventure actually reached the developers, because we talk to each other a lot, and they are using it for patch improvements.
With my articles...I write it because I want to. Not because I have to, if that makes sense. If something needs praising, I will without question shower it with love.
Now I hope I dont need to add that I sent my friend a copy of Ys VIII as payment for getting me Mega Man 11

I was a bit negative in my own review of Ys that I wrote for my friends here, but overall I had a blast with it. Might be a top 5 RPG by the end of the Switch's lifecycle for me.
@EvilLucario I mostly agree with your criticisms, although I had no issue with Adol being a sort of "blank slate" who merely projects heroism and functions as the link between the player and the rest of the game. Silent protagonists don't bother me, and I'll gladly take one of those over one who never shuts up, like Nathan Drake.
It's also kind of funny that you did almost nothing but flash guards because I'm sort of the opposite. I think I might have accidentally triggered a couple of flash guards here and there, but overall I just got good at reliably flash moving instead. Probably not co-incidentally, I'm great at dodging in BotW but can't parry to save my life.
I'm a little sad that the game eventually abandoned the meta of discovering the secrets of this cursed isle to become yet another game where you have to thwart fate and kill God (or some other authoritative supernatural entity), but I still think the setting and Metroidvanian progression structure are both pretty interesting for the genre.
For me, the likeable (if shallow) characters, great music, solid, addictive combat, fun exploration, and the way the game's various progression systems gracefully come together are what got me so into it.
@Ralizah I'm just personally not a fan of silent protagonists. So a silent protagonist can swing either way depending on the person. I don't mind silent protagonists as much when it's like a "real role-playing" game, like Dark Souls (kinda) and Pokemon and I can customize my character, but the feeling is still there and it's not something I can really toss aside completely. That said, I recognize it's just an inherent bias to me so others may not mind it, and if I'm having fun with the story and gameplay I can overlook it.
As for Flash Dodges/Guards, my main problem with Flash Dodges was that the timing to activate them seemed REALLY off and I could never trigger them consistently. Something about them felt really broken for some reason, which is weird because like you I pretty much do nothing but dodging in BotW (though I do parry un-Perfect Dodgable attacks) and especially Dark Souls (I'm god-awful at parrying in Dark Souls lmao). What's funny is that when I brought it up with other people, a few had the opposite problem where they never used Flash Guards but always used Flash Dodges. I don't know if either of us messed up the timing or whatever, but who knows.
For me, the likeable (if shallow) characters, great music, solid, addictive combat, fun exploration, and the way the game's various progression systems gracefully come together are what got me so into it.
This right here is really why I love the game overall at the end of the day; the overall experience mixing everything really makes the game super, super good. Hell, due to having no money system, a wide array of difficulty options, comparatively short game length to other modern contemporaries, and similar enough real-time combat to hack-and-slash games, it might be a really good entry point into modern JRPGs.
Seems pretty likely that when Kimishima said about unannounced 2018 games, he was mostly talking about the large wave of 3rd party games. Well that and Labo.
Speaking of which here's another, Football Manager 2019 Touch is coming to Switch in November.
So today, thanks an article about the PS Store (Thank you) updates over on PushSquare, that if I type Ubisoft into the Switch eShop, it returns all their games. Same with a genre, say, Horror, it shows me horror games.
Apparently the PlayStation Store DIDNT do this?
Also people complaining the eShop doesn't let you search by genre....evidently needs to just search that genre...
Man... keep looking at Valkyria Chronicles 4 placement on Amazon, and it's still in the #300-600 range on Switch (and even PS4).
What's the deal? Everyone complains about ports, says they want new games. Yet here's an awesome new game (a REALLY awesome new game), it even has a demo... and nobody cares. I don't get it.
Why isnt this game getting the attention YS VIII or Tales of Vesperia got/is getting. Heck even Shining Resonance was several hundred places higher a month before its release!
What is the deal? This is a sequel to one of the classics of the genre, incredibly individual with its style, and supposedly just as good as the first...
But indie games like Wizards of Legends will end up outselling it. Shameful

@JaxonH How dare an indie game outsell a game published by...lets see here....
Oh okay. Here we go. Valkyria Chronicles 4...er….SEGA...and after the last few VC games....oh...oooohhh….
Hm, yep. People didn't like the last few things and are nervous about a new one being good.
Oh and that release date, September 25th? Yeah no, not a good time for a JRTS. Surrounded on both sides by CoD and Battlefield and RDR2, and FIFA and NBA on the other.
People only have so much money and there are bigger, more loudly advertised titles right around it.

@Knuckles-Fajita
Ooh boy here we go. Snarky response I could have predicted a mile away.
Yes, how dare a mediocre pixel indie game outsell a quality, high production value follow up to one of the most beloved classics of the genre.
Dang right. Shameful shameful shameful.
And I think that reasoning has no basis in reality. The game is already out in Japan, people have already reviewed it and its supposedly just as good if not better than the first. There's even a demo.
Fact is the game is simply being ignored wholesale. People are so quick to buy into whatever mediocre 8 bit indie flavor of the week happens to be, but proceed to complain about not enough new games coming while simulatanously ignoring the best ones.
It's worth mentioning. If this game flops itll be the biggest tragedy in modern gaming I've ever witnessed. This is probably exactly why so many studios only push out clones of popular trending games. Because when you do something with original style and unique flair, nobody's interested.
And its not even just a Switch issue, the game is going almost just as badly on PS4 in the rankings. Idk why. Surely it warrants at least the attention of Shining Resonance, if not YS VIII or Octopath.
