@NEStalgia I see, thank you for your insight. It sounds like we're close to the same place. I tried Awakening but was unbelievably bad at it. I think I would enjoy Fire Emblem Warriors... But that $60 price point. I wish Nintendo would occasionally put their games on sell like other companies.

@JohnBlackstar Certainly people just need to accept that others have opinions. My opinions do not come from that of a Nintendo hater, but someone who has played Nintendo systems and games for over a couple of decades. Nintendo systems are always the first I will buy. I want Nintendo to do well. I just also want them to treat their supporters like they really care about them, too.

However, I will say I don't get behind that attacking of Spanjard. However much his response to your post made me want to remain silent...

@FragRed Bringing up the financial success of a system does little for me. It reminds me of people telling me that the Wii was Nintendo's best console since it was a massive financial success. It's great that Nintendo was successful, but financial success means little to me when their products are subpar, which I most certainly have to say that the Wii was subpar in nearly every way to me.

I don't mean to bring up that comparison to the Wii in every way, though. The Switch is not as subpar of a product as the Wii, but it does have some issues. And the point is that financial success does not equate to my approval of a product.

I'm generation Atari 2600. The original model was released 2 months before I was born.Pong was old news by then.

I guess that makes me generation Odyssey......man I'm old! 😜

the expectation of formerly Wii U games to carry it

There are 2 former Wii U games- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Pokken Tournament. I don't think Nintendo or anyone else expects those two games to "carry" Switch. I think they expect them to supplement Switch. The games that are actually carrying the system are Zelda Breath of the Wild (which was on Switch from day one), ARMS, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Skyrim, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and of course, Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The Wii U ports just help round it out, as do some of the less evergreen titles such as Ultra Street Fighter II, DOOM, Monster Hunter XX, Resident Evil Revelations Collection, Fire Emblem Warriors, LA Noire, Dragonball Xenoverse 2, etc.

I would suggest selling the game, making $30 off of it, then putting that toward a Switch copy. You pay half price, and gain the illustrious battle mode that, tbh, is half the game worth owning in itself. If you bought it digitally, maybe just sell the Wii U and the games. You could buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which not only adds the battle mode and new items and characters, etc, but gain an HD handheld version for the same price (Switch bonus built right in to every game). Then buy Zelda again (aiming with the Joycon is so natural- that and having the portability puts it as a considerable cut above the Wii U version, which is why most considerate the definitive version, plus it runs better). And have money left over for new games.

Well, the Wii U didn't come with one either. But at least in the case of Switch, you don't really need one. Not only do you get a pair of Joycon which, at least to me, are far more confortable with one in each hand than any Pro Controller, you can slide them in the grip to make a Pro Controller (and it's surprisingly comfortable), and use them individually if needed. You're getting a lot of value controller-wise out of the box. If you absolutely insist on having one though, then like Wii U, yes you have to buy one separately

What if I don't care about HD Rumble, gyro controls, etc.? I just want a simple controller, like the Wii U Pro Controller. I didn't ask to pay for all of that

It's only $10 more. Just because you didn't ask to pay for all that doesn't mean they should just strip down their controllers to the bare minimum, robbing everyone else of better technology which most have received very positively. A lot of people don't play games online, but they still paid for the Wi-Fi card in their console. Some people only buy games digitally, but they still paid for the disc drive. Some people only buy games physically, but they still paid for the internal hard drive. There are countless scenarios where people are paying for things they are not 100% going to use. But it likely would have cost this much anyways, even if it didn't have HD Rumble or gyro. Prices went up last generation, and Nintendo (for once) raised them this time around. Least this time they're offering something in return for it (unlike the $10 PS4/X1 controller price hike).

@Harmonie Your interests and overall interactions with gaming seem similar to mine. I like playing video games as well but don't have time to play lots of them, like you too. The Wii U was my main console since 2015 and I still have a decent backlog to get through before I get the Switch.

Let me suggest what I'm doing with my Wii U and perhaps you can adopt a similar approach:
As @JaxonH suggested, sell Mario Kart 8 on Wii U if you have it on disc. With MK8D, eBay prices have dropped, but you can still sell MK8 for Wii U and make $25-$30. Consider that as money off of MK8D for Switch. Considering you like MK so much, $30-$35 for a 1080p version of a game you previously enjoyed, now with full portability, a full-fledged battle mode that you will likely enjoy quite a bit, and ability to play with your Switch-owning friends should be worth it.

I suggest you sell your Wii U outright with all its games, if you are done playing on it. While the Wii U is my favorite Nintendo system ever, I've accepted that nowadays with my limited gaming time I likely won't revisit an older console once I get a Switch to justify keeping it. Sell it now, and you can make some money that you can use towards Switch games.

I understand why you're a bit disappointed especially considering the hype. The hype is real but honestly only for those who skipped the Wii U - for them the Switch year one is arguably the best year one for a console ever. But for Wii U owners like me and you and many others on this site, there were plenty of games released last year and plenty more that will be released this year that were not on Wii U. So I suggest you sell your Wii U and games to get some money to repurchase their corresponding Switch versions, and wait out for upcoming games — 2018 might seem barren now, but Nintendo reveals games with barely any notice often so I wouldn't worry.

Thank you for your responses. Unfortunately, selling Mario Kart 8 isn't a possibility for me because I own it digitally. The only games I own physically are New Super Mario Bros. U with Luigi (which came with the system) and Super Mario 3D World. Everything else I bought digitally because it was so hard to find them when I wanted them.

Selling games is an interesting thought, though. I don't want to sell my Wii U. I have so much time put into my Breath of the Wild run on there. However, NSMBU was never something I much cared for. I fired it up once and was bored with it before completing the first level. Plus, I also got with my PS4 a copy of some Batman Arkham Asylum game which I also will never play. I wonder if I could get money off of that?

And now I've really pulled this off-topic. Sorry.

If me, i would rather keep my Wii U.
Wii U is still useful for playing Wii games in 1080p output.
I use my Wii U for playing Wii games mostly, Wii U only if i'm in the mood.
I'm fine with just only 8 Wii U games that matched with my taste. I will never sold them.
Also, i can use my Wii U to display Youtube videos on my 32' Sharp TV, sending email with Gamepad, and if i have enough budget i can make my Wii U become Semi Portable console by using Portable Power Bank and Wii U gamepad as the screen.

Ah yes, that's another thing. I gave my Wii to friends, so the Wii U is my only method of playing Wii games, as well.

Never really did like playing Wii games on the Wii U, though. They were so full of jagged edges.

Keep your Wii U.
You can use it for your Wii and Wii U games.
Wii games output looks better from Wii U machine rather than using AV2HDMI Converter from Wii (The result was Too Bright, Quite washed out by using AV2HDMI)
And for some Wii U games that made you bored, me too have some Wii U games that still Unfinished due to lack of the Hype. But i still kept them, maybe i will gain my Hype back someday because i still see their potential.

You can have BOTH Wii U and Switch, standing together in your gaming room.
Two is better than one, right ?

I would never personally sell my Wii U. But I'm not really crunched financially either, and it's modded to play all my GameCube and Wii games digitally from the SD card, so not only are the discs preserved but loading times improved and Wii U Pro Controller for GC in HD widescreen.

But. Not everyone is like me. If I were in a situation where I couldn't afford a game I loved on Switch, I'd sell my Wii U copy to buy it. Cause either way, I'd only have one. Might as well be the superior Switch version.

Remember what i have ever said about my gaming devices ?
My Nintendo machines and games are Ohana.
Ohana in Hawaii means Family.
Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.
That's also working for every single my Nintendo machines and games.
I will not throw away Super Mario 3D World Wii U just for getting Switch games.
They are belong to me, my "Family" members.

But when you give advice, you cannot force your views on to everyone else. Just because you would never do it and I would never do it, does not mean they should never do it. You have to open your mind to the realization that not everyone is like you, or me.

@Ralizah That's one bizarre looking game and one that I'll definitely be adding to my collection. I love platformers and bullet hell shooters, so those combined with some cute bunny girls and an 80% Metacritic rating = day one buy!

The Long Dark devs are exploring the possibility of porting their survival/exploration game to the Nintendo Switch.

@Spoony_Tech Well I was only responding to his generations argument, which is a flawed one to begin with. I agree.

I still feel strongly that some of you, and by that I mean 2 of you, need to play this game.

I have this game on Steam, its probably one of the best Metroidvania games I've played yet. Extremely non-linear once you get the double jump early on.

Boss fights are VERY Touhou inspired as well!
