@UmniKnight I think you're underestimating the importance of portability to people though. Clearly people like the idea of switching between TV and handheld mode, and this will influence people's choice in whether to buy games for the Switch or other systems.
In comparison Wii U had inferior ports with no such benefit. Gamecube multiplatforms were on par with the competition, but had no competitive edge.
Not to mention that for some games people may be more willing to double-dip if different consoles offer different benefits.
Nintendo's games look immaculate. You're putting way too much stock into marginal graphical increases. Way too much stock.
A few years ago Switch graphics would have been top shelf. The best we ever saw on consoles. But now all of a sudden, because a stronger console exists, it's not good enough? And then when next generation comes, and games look even better, all of a sudden it won't be good enough, yet again.
Stop basing your happiness on how well a game looks "in comparison to" and start appreciating it for how good it looks on its own merits. Otherwise you will be perpetually dissatisfied for the rest of your natural life.
@UmniKnight I think lifestyle has a lot to do with it. If you dwell in a dimly lit bedroom all day, then you will gravitate to the most powerful rig. If you like to play out and about with the option of being able to chill on the sofa then Switch nails it. So for the blue ocean picking up a Switch, the perception is freedom. You are not bound to a single room. And I promise there are more people in the world that find that more attractive than sitting in one of those ridiculous gaming chairs.
@UmniKnight Yes and like I said, folk like myself are probably the vast majority. Those who own more than 1 console and have the opportunity to buy a multiplat elsewhere are probably such a small minority that they're not worth worrying about.
@UmniKnight
“I'm just wondering what people say on the account of buying multiplats, while they own another system, and don't use their Switch for portability. If you buy multiplats then, you're paying more for objectively less.”
Who happens to be this in very specific group though? I think almost no one. So why make a case for it?
I guess there might be 1 group of people who generally just want to play on Nintendo hardware but also wanted some 3rd party games. And since WiiU didn’t give them that they bought a second system. But now that 3rd party is returning on Nintendo’s hardware, they prefer to play it on that instead.
I don't understand this constant need to portray multiplats as unattractive. We have said it multiple times now- you buy a multiplat on Switch for the portability, because it's your only system, or you like the unique features.
That's three reasons.
Do you know how many reasons there are to buy multiplat else where? Just one. Because you want the best graphics and don't care about anything else.
Why are you continuing to belittle multiplats as if nobody wants them? Clearly some people want them because they are selling. But even if they weren't, who cares! Gosh dang dude. Do you not talk about anything else? "Switch should've been a power console. Who wants multiplats on Switch anyways" yada yada... it never ends.
What part about"Different people want different things" is so hard to understand? What part about "the best selling console of all time is a handheld" do you not understand? People like portability. Just as much as they like home consoles... Just. As Much. We already have the ability to buy these games on a power console. Three different options for the same exact thing. Nobody wants or needs a fourth. Why is it such a problem to have ONE OPTION that's different? Just ONE?
There is no "sweeping under the rug". I said it in black-and-white for you to understand. YES. PORTABILITY IS THE BIG DRAW. How much more clear can I make it? Nothing is being "swept under the rug". That is the big draw, and thank God for it because if it wasn't portability there wouldn't be ANY reason to buy them.
You're not gonna stop until everyone here says "yup, you're right, there is absolutely no reason for multiplats to exist and they shouldn't even bother bringing them, nobody wants them and the Switch was a huge mistake". Just keep repeating the same things hoping you get a different answer.

@JaxonH I'm merely asking something and gauging reactions, people's reasons for wanting these games is their own and their every right, I've never said it was "wrong" or "less valid" I'm merely gauging what kind of reasons people would have to buy a multiplat for their Switch, if they have another system and no interest in the Switch's feature offers, that's all. Does that harm you physically/mentally in some, strange way?
I merely find it a shame that the Switch version comes out the worst for it in comparisons, and these will NEVER stop, because it's a consumer's right to look for their best bang for their buck, and the differences are rather significant, it's a fact. I'm merely trying to establish, for myself, what kind of idea people have, that's all.
@UmniKnight I think it's fair to ask what answer you're hoping for and what you want to achieve by repeating your question over and over. Everyone is agreed that portability is the big reason to buy multi platform games on Switch.
Even if you mostly use your Switch docked the possibility of picking it up and carrying on playing on a train or plane is still very attractive. Like people who buy expensive gym memberships but then never go - they like the idea that it's there and what it reflects on them just that they have a gym membership.
An average consumer often has no choice because a 'normal' consumer will only have one console. So there's that too.
But, of course, a 'normal' consumer generally won't be able to tell the difference anyway unless Digital Foundry has told them (or the knowledge from DF has percolated through the internet to them). It's not like comparing the ZX Spectrum version of Street Fighter 2 to the SNES one these days.
Just seems like this is not the first time we've had this discussion. Or even the second time.
Of course there are differences. There were differences between MH3U on 3DS and Wii U as well. Or RE Revelations between 3DS and Wii U. Just like there were differences between Resident Evil Revelations 2 on Vita and PS4.
Only now, our handheld version of RE Revelations 2 is literally the exact same game as on PS4, aside from 30fps. Now, our handheld version of the original RE Revelations is the identical version as PS4, with 1080p/60fps and all for console. Now, our handheld version of Mario Kart 8 literally outclasses the Wii U version. Our handheld version of LA Noire looks identical to PS4/X1. Even 1080p and everything for console, making it the exact same game only 3X the value.
Most games have small compromises- but the difference this time is it's extremely negligible, and in some cases (RE Revelations, LA Noire) there is no compromise at all. Sure, there might be one or two instances of games that require a little more to be toned down than usual (DOOM), but in reality those games would have never even dreamed of getting a portable version before now, so it makes portable versions of those games possible for the first time ever.
If I can buy the exact same game on Switch, and get 3 versions in one for my money, that's the logical choice to me. Even if it means only being 30fps instead of 60. If I like the game enough, I'll buy it twice. Once for Switch and once for X1X (buy Switch version right away, grab X1 version in the $15 bin later). But for anyone who has ever played handhelds, the mere notion of playing full PS4 games on a handheld, even if not quite as good looking, is a dream come true. The differences this time are negligible, versus past handheld games that had to be built entirely from the ground up.

@Ralizah Hit the nail on the head with versatility. The fact that people can enjoy the same game at home, work, etc. is a big deal. Tabletop mode is also attractive to people traveling/going to work etc. that have someone to play with. Before you had to lug around the game console and extra controllers, hope you have access to a TV etc. Now you just need the carry one thing and two people can play in tabletop mode at work or w/e.
As for the graphical comprises, I think people are willing to sacrifice some resolution, framerate etc for the
versatility. So far, none of the 3rd party titles are a huge downgrade or anything.
@UmniKnight Find me one person on this earth that owns PC/PS4/XB1 and Switch, but that only uses their Switch in docked mode, and has bought only the Switch version of Doom.
I think people absolutely do care about tech, and power. But you can't make the mistake of lumping 2 different subgroups together as 1.
People like Switch specifically because of its tech and power. "Compromise" versus a home console is obviously expected. You're comparing apples and oranges. But versus previous handhelds it's not compromise at all- it's like a 2 generation leap in terms of graphics and size/scope of games available.
We went from 3DS... to Switch. And that excites people. The handheld aspect of Switch is truly groundbreaking- we're getting portable experiences we never would have dreamed of seeing before. Portable experiences that are the exact same as what you'd get on a home power console. Its crazy.
The console aspect isn't nearly as exciting, but it's adequate. It's HD, many games are 1080p on Switch docked, in fact many games offer full parity with X1/PS4 (LA Noire, RE Revelations, Disgaea 5, Rocket League, etc) and those that don't aren't too far behind. And it at least allows those who enjoy playing games on a TV the opportunity to do so. Switch was a much better alternative than going handheld only.
@Spoony_Tech
I knew you had bought one but, just wanted to cover all bases in case. Maybe some one here is looking for one and can take advantage.

I think that's already been established.
But I also think pretty much everyone will agree with me when I say it's a fantastic thing that they did not alienate home console gamers by going handheld only. They could've thrown in the towel and we would've never played a Nintendo game on the TV again. But by providing a hybrid they have allowed fans to continue playing those games on the TV, while still succeeding thanks to the portability.
It was an ingenius move.

Before you were complaining they should have just made a straight console.
I think you just like disagreeing, and criticizing regardless of what they do. And had they made a pure handheld and it got off to a slow start like 3DS, you would've said they should've made it a hybrid.
