Its control in general is crap. Getting Geralt to do what you want him to do is like trying to wrestle with a 30 foot tapeworm.

Story, characters, world, and lore are all masterclass though.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

@CaviarMeths: Do you level up in Witcher 3? (Honestly, I haven't bothered with it as I cannot play it!)

Yes. Its systems are pretty standard ARPG fare. Level up, craft, repair gear, etc. Nothing that wasn't in either Morrowind or Fable 12 years ago, as far as gameplay goes.

It's an average game wrapped around some of the best world building and character writing ever to appear in the medium.

Okay, okay, okay. Witcher 3 /spoilerson Tell me what arc for which character was 'master class.'

I beat that whole game, main side quests n' all, and I have yet to find anything like that. Yes the mage oppression (done first in 3 Dragon Age games) was bad, but it just kills a bunch of red shirts and never gets resolved. Same goes for the themes of suffering and brother-against-brother civil war fueled by foreign imperialism (which Skyrim also did first).

The Wild Hunt is a giant freaking anticlimax as they start being interesting that quest where you world-jump and stop aprox. 1 quest later when you fight Eredin like the most generic of anime antagonists. (A AAA choice-based game with a generically evil force as the enemy? Both Mass Effect & Dragon Age did that first.)

The duke of Velen's story was interesting, true, but I feel the game dwelled there too much with the scope it purported. The ending where Geralt returns to the swamp because Ciri died is the most random, laughable thing. It was based entirely off this a stupid dialogue choice of whether to be a stern / controlling or warm / encouraging father, resolving a plot (the existential threat of the white frost) which only gets established in the last half-hour of the game. Same goes for the stupid Ciri death tease.

I liked that, admittedly generic, white knighting quest about Dandelion's girlfriend, "Carnal Sins." However, despite all of this talk about Witcher 3 being this non-linear, immersive, transcendent special-freaking-butterfly of a game Priscilla just stays in a bed for the rest of the game after you complete it. And it ended in another anime fight / confrontation scene (and all of the 'serial killer in X city' quests in Elder Scrolls did this first).

Does the Witcher 3 get all of this exaggerated praise for having basic story quests in an open world? Because it certainly does that. Is it loved for representing older men & women and themes of parenthood / divorce / older love in what has primarily been a young man's medium? Because I can understand that. However, while I understand the desire for representation, it's 2016 and I'm really getting tired of people singing generic praises without any specific elaboration.

...and The Last of Us did that first.

@Haru17: So Witcher 3 doesn't bring anything new to the table then?

I mean, yeah. What Witcher 3 does brand new is be and [rpg] with a [choice-based narrative] in an [open world] The AAA only open world RPG before it that I can think of was Skyrim / Elder Scrolls, and those weren't traditional RPGs. Since we're still moving into 8th gen saying "X game, but open world" is still novel because most games used to just never be open world before.

1. Wind Waker (unless a whole kingdom being wiped out before the game even begins doesn't count)

Lol. I've heard of some other famous stories where something like that happened. 2 really popular books. Can't remember what they were called though.

Yeah, controlling Geralt in that game is freaking horrible. REALLY bad.

Sounds like I made the right call in skipping The Witcher 3 last year. Who wants to play an RPG with bad combat?

Um... no. You should still play it. It's still VERY good. It's combat and controls is just bad. And if you like Wind Waker (another game with bad combat, in my opinion) then you should still give Witcher 3 a chance.

Are you kidding? It had the best combat of all 3D Zelda games.

Most RPGs involve a lot of fighting. If the combat is unwieldy and imprecise, what's the point of playing it when I'm going to be annoyed by the controls half the time? The horrible controls are what ruined Kid Icarus: Uprising for me, and that was an otherwise fantastic game.

Why do you think The Wind Waker has bad combat? It's largely similar to most other 3D Zeldas. That is, it's a tight and intuitive system.

I'll give the first Witcher game a go one day and see what I think of it. I only paid around $2 for it, so it won't be much of a waste if I don't enjoy it.

Can someone explain to me what is so bad about the combat in Witcher 3? I've been playing it for the last week and I think the combat is great. I mean compare it to Zelda combat. What doesn't it have that Zelda does? The game you should be talking about for bad combat is the first Witcher. Have you played that garbage combat system?

@Ralizah I sincerely implore you, don't let the first Witcher influence your opinion of the third. Witcher 1 was fun for the most part but the combat is unarguably atrocious.

Twilight Princess has the best combat. Wind Waker's combat is very bland. Don't let the cutesy graphics disguise it. Replaying Wind Waker is a chore.

Witcher 3 combat is stiff and sloopy and needlessly confusing. Try just running with Geralt in a town. It's not fun. Ocarina of Time has MUCH better controls and combat.

Kid Icarus Uprising should've been on Wii U to begin with. It would've got perfect scores.
