Original IP can't really have the anticipation that sequels or nth games in the long-lived franchise can. There's no prior work often, and if there is then it's usually a much different concept. Meaning of course that there's nothing to sustain people on it, no text to read, digest, and discuss, thus forming a fandom.
I think No Man's Sky has managed quite well though. Mostly cos it's more or less a new idea. Or an existing idea taken to new lengths.
Of course it could end up being complete toss. But I'm pretty excited to see how it turns out.
Alright, we are in the year of Zelda U's release! It's pretty exciting! It better not get delayed again, though. Has a Nintendo game ever been delayed twice?

Even though it was more popular at their respective heights, I really think that Final Fantasy XV is less anticipated than Zelda U. For long franchises with lots of texts for fans to go on, I think absence makes the heart grow fonder. Marquee Zelda games (the 3D console ones) have been out of it for longer than their counterparts in Final Fantasy. Moreover, Final Fantasy has received a lot more weird spinoffs and just IOS games, which seem to dilute the value of their marquee games, than Zelda has. Though Zelda is woefully catching up in that regard.
Moreover, Final Fantasy 13 1-3 seem to have just been a bigger dip in popularity / acclaim than Skyward Sword / the late Wii and Wii U era was for Zelda. Lightning Returns sold shockingly low for a mainline FF game.
Final Fantasy XV is far more anticipated than Zelda U. It really is. I hate to be the sales guy but Final Fantasy XV on PS4 launch day will probably utterly destroy Zelda U's launch. Definitely in Japan. Definitely in Europe. Definitely in America.
And if you really think FF 13 Trilogy hurt the series so much then you're wrong. FF 14 clearly brought people back.
It's no insult to Zelda U. I'm extremely excited for it but saying its more anticipated than Final Fantasy XV is wrong.
@Blast: Of course FFXV would be more anticipated than Zelda U, it hasn't had an entire year of absolutely no info at all whereas the last Zelda U info was Game Awards 2014 (that very short snippet in the November Direct doesn't count as you could deduce all of that from the E3 2014 + Game Awards 2014 footage).
The Legend Of Zelda is one of the most loved games not just by kids but of all ages. I remember my college friend threw out an instant house party and when she opened the cupboard all she had was something likethese http://partyopedia.co/products/the-legend-of-zelda-birthday-p... Imagine college teens using The Legend Of Zelda paper cups for beers? Not bad. T'was a night of fun!
Kids are the exact same demographic that holds Nintendo back sometimes, in my opinion.

It's had about 5 years of no info aside from a title change or three
@LztheQuack: Which is better for its hype given you think it's cancelled but it comes back like The Last Guardian. Zelda U will happen (on at least 1 platform) and all the silence has been doing is fuel NX rumours.

Well, duh. That's not any metric of anticipation, though. That's Zelda U being tied to a flagging console and, probably, a new hardware launch. Of course it's not going to break launch sales records. It could close that gap if the console grows successful, though.
Yeah, they thought it was the worst one.....after they'd all bought and played it.
(except me actually. It's one of the only FFs I never bought on release)
@CaviarMeths: Wait, you don't expect FFXV to surpass FFXIII? Why? I kept hearing from a lot of folks that they thought it the worst one.
Ehh, it's pretty middle-of-the-line Final Fantasy. It's about as good as FFX. A solid 6/10. Better than mediocre, not great.
But it sold very well. The brand and hype was very healthy at the time and so was the landscape in which it released. The troubled production of FFXV isn't going to do it any favours. Neither is the hit that the brand took in the last 5 years. It will sell well, particularly on the built in PS4 audience, but not as well as XIII.
I'm expecting it to do pretty well on Steam though, when it gets the inevitable PC release. It's almost not even worth the cost of the disc and plastic box to ship it on XB1 though...
It's all relative though. Final Fantasy is one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful video game series of all time. Several of the games are over 90 on MC and sold millions upon millions of copies (which actually makes it a very apt comparison to Zelda). For such a prestigious and legendary brand to be where it is now is saddening. It used to go without saying that the new mainline Final Fantasy game would be the best-selling JRPG of the year or even generation. Lightning Returns got outsold by like... Tales of Whatever and Bravely Default.
Yeah, seriously though, I think FFX and FXIII are both decent, not great. Both a little too shounen for me. I prefer my entertainment to be either all ages or adult.
After some research, I have discovered that not only is the mascot costume not an accident, its name is indeed a portmanteau for the words "algae" and "bulge."
The whole country shares this burden.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
