Well that's great that you enjoyed the puzzles, but plenty of series veterans like myself were totally expecting the shrine solutions and only focused on executing — the most notorious criticism puzzles get. The discovered-but-not-completed state was a joke to us, because that basically never happened because the puzzles don't actually ask you to think, just to repeat the same four dog tricks over and over again.
I agree that Breath compares favorably to other open world games, but that's because I don't have that high of an opinion of any OW series save for The Elder Scrolls. As a Zelda game it was hopelessly inferior.
I just realized another unfulfilling completion metric though — getting treasure chests next to all of the shrines on the map (means finding and opening every chest inside).
@-Green-
Well, I must say - thank you for your very civil reply! That was very heartening to read on the internet. I'm glad we can still acknowledge good points from other sides.
Like I said, I'm always careful to reiterate: it's just my opinion about this game. And I applaud the team for trying something different. I played the original with my dad when it launched many, many years ago. We loved exploring and finding all the secrets, and there definitely is some of that in BotW. I think it's a good game - even a great game, perhaps (I did play it for 100+ hours my first time through lol). But it's not a Zelda game to me, that's all.
I just hope they do some 2D spin-offs that retain more of the classic feel if the 3D games are going to go further down this road.
It's not the same amount of puzzles spread out, it's a bunch of worse ones thrown randomly around the map...
...I can barely even remember 5 good shrines that made me think for a change — most of them were so obvious I was on autopilot, fighting with the physics system to achieve the obvious answer rather than doing any actual thinking. ....
...I think the divine beasts were pretty high quality despite their samey aesthetic and bosses. However, they and the story segments around them were simply too short to compare to a forest temple or water temple. They lasted like 2-4 hours all together amidst a 100-300 hour game.
Come to think of it, one of the things that gives infamous late-game dungeons their difficulty is their longevity. It challenges the brain well to be confronted by a large dungeon with many wrong turns and locked doors, especially if one is forced to keep track of the dungeon's layout in order to solve it as a whole; it's more daunting. Some dungeons are like those giant sudoku puzzles, finding where each key's keyhole is, and you don't get that with Breath of the Wild's scrawny dungeons and shrines. Well, you get the "forced to keep track of the dungeon's layout" part nicely with the divine beasts, but not the size, not the the endless corridors or locked doors. Perhaps that's why it felt that we just breezed past them and felt unsatisfied.
Though If we can just go back to our sense of wonder pre-release for a moment: Remember how cool it was when we learned that the giant moving mechanical beasts in the distance were the dungeons? Nintendo still gets mad props for doing that. But next time, let's hope they're bigger, and less monotonous-looking.
@Nicolai Keys and maps are definitely a large part of Zelda dungeons' length and challenge. You could get lost in them, their structures and passageways were so intricate. Something like Dragonroost Caverns or Snowhead would be a ton more impressive if it kept all of the same careful level design, but was a fully explorable structure with no load breaks, a bunch of secret hallways, and a better sense of where you were within it. The divine beasts weren't that, but their Metroid Prime-style maps are on the right track.
Honestly, a big part of that wonder was thinking how I was going to glide up to the hawk and battle the salamander on the mountainside. I was very disappointed that the models weren't flexible enough to battle themselves (Ruta was just standing still and shooting projectiles it conjured in the air randomly) or be revisit-able after completion (which has honestly been a big part every Zelda game except this one). How that Link just got teleported up into the sky with no gameplay whatever is a big part of why I characterize Breath as 'lazy.' I think seamless transitions into and out of the beasts would have been a lot more impressive, especially for dungeons as short and kinda really ugly as these.
@pandarino I have not as I'm on Switch, but you should call Nintendo customer support and try to have them help you sort it out. They have pretty good assistance, but might be closed on Tuesday if you're in the US.
the DLC has drawn me in again, but no idea who decided the Zelda game I have died in the most needed a "hard mode".
lol. Totally know what you mean! I probably won't bother with the hard mode to be honest, as once I've 100%ed the WiiU version, I'm going to do it all on the siwtcxh version. (I dabble in the switch version form time to time still whenever I 'm out just because the switch is portable, and the wii u is not) but to be honest I'm only a fraction of a way through the switch version still, whereas the WiiU version I'm ever getting closer to a full 100%. (still got a whole tonne of koroks to do though, and there's one armor piece that just hasn't yet triggered from the daily amiibo scans, so god knows how long it will be before I finally get the tunic of the hero in order to fully upgrade all available armor sets), but other than that I've got all the ones I can unlock so far. (not counting the three available from the not yet properly released amiibos).
I've seen them on for extortionate prices from Scalpers on Amazon already, but there's no way I'm paying over 50 bucks each for those. (from what the reviews were saying about them, they are all from stock with faults anyway, like bent swords etc, which explains how the sellers even got hold of those).
Fortunately a local videogame store let me pre-order them a couple of weeks back at their proper retail price though, so I was only just lucky enough to be able to order those three for 14.99 each. (apparently they're not taking any more pre-orders though, so looks like I did that just in time before they had sold out of all the units they knew would be coming in). Means I will have to wait until end of July / beginning of August before I get them though, but at least I know they will be non defective ones and that I didn't get ripped off, so glad I did it that way in the end.
But dying to finally get the fierce deity set that gets unlocked by the Majora's Mask Link amiibo though. That's the one I am most looking forward to. Not quite sure what the Skyward Sword Link and Twilight Princess Link amiibos will unlock, but will be glad to have them all the same. Anybody on here know what they are supposed to unlock?

"Awe pants."
(Joy-con is dropped on pavement multiple times)
"Gaah, look at all of these scratches!"
(Joy-con falls into garbage disposal)
"You know what, I can fix this! I'll paint over it and give it that weathered look!"
The video above is the result.
