I think the idea with prefering a Gamecube controller for Smash is that the main button for pulling moves off was large and centred, with easier access to the jump button. And aside from the d-pad and c-stick, it's a pretty all-round good design/layout.
Idk, I'm in the camp that sees the GameCube controller as something that's really good, but I don't see a drastic day-and-night difference between something like that to the Dualshock, Xbox 360/One, and Pro Controller. Rather, it's more preference depending on what you like more.
That said, if they released an official new style of Pro Controller that's shaped like a GameCube controller with added ZL/Select (Minus) buttons, clickable sticks, and a good D-Pad, that would probably sell and get a lot of people hyped.
I know I'm late but I feel like listing off some of the characters I'm interested in potentially maining.
Pokemon Trainer (It's like 3 characters in 1, the Stamina mechanic is gone, the time for switching was reduced greatly, among other buffs. This character could be really solid)
Young Link (One of my secondaries in Melee and the most fun iteration of Link imo)
Pichu (For the meme, obviously)
Ike (My Brawl main and it looks like he's gotten some neat buffs from the demo alone)
Sheik (One of my Smash 4 secondaries, she was fun as hell to play in that game and she looks even better in this game)
Zelda (She's an absolute cutie in this game, I adore her new design and it looks like she's getting some much needed buffs as well)
@DarthNocturnal Dan can't be an echo, because only he can perform the glory of Saikyo.
Edit: Actually, does Ryu still have his Dan palette?
@NoUserNamehere As much as Melee's trophies would like you to believe Pichu has no redeeming qualities other than mobility and small size, there are actually hints of being balanced out with surprising strength on his moves. If Ultimate doubles down on this, he could potentially be a hilarious glass cannon.
How he managed to be physically lighter than a balloon remains a mystery, though. The only character in history to be lighter than Jigglypuff.
Mains still Remains from Wii U/3DS to Switch for me
Villager
Mii Fighter
im leading towards Ridley, Inkline and Mario again as mains for ultimate (Mario was a Main for me from N64 and Melee.)

@meleebrawler It's true, I remember back in the Melee days my friend won several local tournaments with Pichu. He's takes down opponents with brutal efficacy when your opponents have trouble landing hits with all the damage he does. I'll definitely be spending a lot of time trying to master him now that he's back.
@meleebrawler Oh man, with Rage and if they rework him to be more of a glass cannon, Pichu could actually potentially be a monster. A little adorable devilish monster. I like that.
I was really hoping for a more significant character roster move set reworks because these some of these characters could really use it.
For example,Jigglypuff is still the same despite being now classified as a fairy type pokémon.Luigi could use his electricity attacks from Superstar Saga and his stun flashlight from Luigi's Mansion:Dark Moon which I think are way better than his Green Missile side +B.Mario's moves represent his appearances fairly well but it is kinda cringe worthy to see him still use the F.L.U.D.D attack when there has been the Galaxy games and Odyssey.Ganondorf still appears to be a Captain Falcon clone but at least they integrated his sword in his Smash attacks.
At this point,I would even accept custom moves as a form of an updated move set assuming that custom moves won't offer slight variations of the characters' standard specials.
I've always been a Kirby main (the move where he turns into a stone and falls on people is my jam), but to be honest I usually just go with the Random button.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music
@Elvie I don't see why F.L.U.D.D. still being around is cringeworthy. Almost every one of his moves references a different game. Besides Sunshine, Aerial Down A is the spin from Galaxy, Up+B is now an Odyssey reference, Over+B is Super Mario World, Down+A, Neutral A, and Aerial Neutral+A are Super Mario 64, Neutral B is a reference to the original SMB, Smash+Forward+A is from Mario and Luigi, Smash Up+A is from Super Mario RPG, his backwards jump is from SMB3, he has a taunt from NSMB.... Wow that's a lot written out. I guess my point is that given his move set's huge reference pool, removing a major game like Sunshine just because it's older seems like an odd choice.
As for the roster: Its nice to have all the characters because it gives lots of variety, but there will definitely be characters left in the cold. Same with the stages: If there's a gigantic amount some will be totally ignored.
Personally I would have gone for a roster the size of Smash 4...but seriously shaken up! And with that I mean: Just keep the mains like Mario, Link and DK and replace the rest by new characters. Nintendo has such a rich vault full of characters, they could take many cool ones from there. And more third-party characters. That and adding some cool new mechanics (like a underwater-stage) would give the game a real fresh breath of air.
But yeah updating old fighters is maybe cheaper then introducing new fighters, I can imagine.
I don't always need the same characters. I played them in previous Smash titles. I am much more excited for new ones. Ridley looks great and the Inklings look fun too.
@Hyrule No thanks. This game was built from the ground up for the Switch and thankfully, unlike SSB4, isn't held back by also having to be for the 3DS.
It's not even a slight possibility, they're not going to do that at all. The 3DS held back far too much in development, and even the New 3DS is outdated tech no one cares for. Look at Fire Emblem Warriors on the 3DS, that is an abomination and it's New 3DS exclusive. Then you want to devote even more time downscaling the Switch assets to 3DS? Even if you have no 3D, that's not going to happen if you want to bring EVERYTHING, which is what Ultimate is going for.
There shouldn't even be talk of a 3DS version, it's not going to happen with so many drawbacks for extremely little gain.
Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill
I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!
Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
@EvilLucario I agree about a 3DS version not happening, but I don't see how the 3DS version of FE Warriors is an abomination or the point of saying that "no one cares for the New 3DS" when that's clearly not true. Many haven't upgraded to the Switch and are still interested for games on 3DS. The unrealistic expectation of a 3DS version of this new Smash game is proof of it, and saying stuff like that seems more like a pointless attack instead of an actual argument.
And returning to FE Warriors, it runs at constant 30 fps, the enemies load in big amounts and fast enough, the models aren't the best but they are decent considering the amount of things happening at the same time and the particle effects look great. It also has the same content and gameplay as the Switch version.
