Do you guys know whether event matches are still in Ultimate and whether you can unlock characters the good old fashioned way (by satisfying specific requirements and then by beating them in a 1 on 1 match)?
Considering event matches haven't been mentioned yet and the Spirits/World of Light mode is basically a spin on event matches, I doubt they will be there in the game but wasn't sure if it was officially confirmed yet. I'm hoping you can still unlock characters by satisfying specific requirements and then by beating them in a 1 on 1 match, that was easily one of my favorite aspects of Smash.
@Saego That makes sense, thanks for letting me know! Still hope they handle unlocking characters like Brawl did, with ways to unlock the old fashioned way as well as unlocking characters through having them join your party in World of Light.
@kkslider5552000 Yeah that's what I suspected too, it's basically a souped-up Event Match mode with context, etc.
@Captain_Toad I agree, as long as the spirit of Event matches remains that's key. Still hope they handle unlocking characters like Brawl did, with ways to unlock the old fashioned way as well as unlocking characters through having them join your party in World of Light.
So my problem with Subspace was that there was an mystery with the Ancient minister but by the time the final act happened.... Is it still spoilers? there was Ganon and Bowser acting as villans, then there was master hand, true villan? Then by the time we got to the near end game, tabuu happened without any lead-up or hint that he was there and it kinda lost steam from there. Basically an amazing Spider-Man 2 or Spider-Man 3 problem. Probably a despite bid to extend game time..Idk. The way Subspace handled the final act was a bit of a mess. The final boss being cheap and the big final stage didn't help.
So, I'm hoping that world of light gives us a clear narrative all the way from start to finish and it seems to do just that.
@shadow-wolf Both ways of unlocking seems to be the case!
As much as I loved the cutscenes, my biggest issue with Subspace was that the platforming and PvE combat was not well integrated into Smash's mechanics.
Focusing on Event-like matches while having fanservice as modes as transportation (Surfing on Lapras or traveling in space with the Great Fox) might be a more polished experience. Hope there's more cutscenes than just an opening and ending too.
@Seacliff Subspace was still the best game on the Wii. Forget Smash, just Subspace. I mean, it was basically a Kirby game featuring most of the Nintendoverse as protagonists, in their own world environments. That was just amazing. Playing Donkey and Diddy in actual new DKC type sidescroll stages with Kirby mechanics fused with Smash mehanics was so fun. Coop having Pikachu follow Samus in a Metroid environment with elevators and all was too cool
I'm not sure if World of Light will have unique environments or just the overworld linking the main battle stages, but I'm hoping it can revive that sense of fun.
3DS Smash Run was fun but not really rewarding or inviting, and WiiU board game was just insulting.
I thought Subspace was okay. Worth a playthrough if only for the unlockables, but I never understood the people who thought it could have been a good standalone game.
Yeah same, although on the same note I've never understood the people who think Brawl is the worst game ever because of it.
@ReaderRagfish Really? I must have played it like 20 times..... I never touched any other part of smash, they seemed boring, like a wannabe fighting game. Subspace was the whole point of Smash to me. Most played game on Wii by far. Just Subspace. "Srs. Gaming" went to 360 that round.
Of course it should be its own game. It was just Kirby with alternate heroes and no copy ability, and crossover environs. It was a bigger Kirby game than Star Allies.
@Yosheel Smash Tour was a grotesque perversion. I played Smash U for like 3 hours in, arcade mode style, and then never touched it again. No subspace, boring board game: There was no game to play there. World of Light looks far better than Mario Party with Smash as every mini-game.
@NEStalgia Yeah, I've beaten Subspace Emissary at least 10 times over the years, I love it too. No surprise, considering how much I love the Kirby games, but you aren't alone there.
