I'm sure this has been discussed and I missed it, but here goes...
I was originally thinking about Dr. Robotnik as a playable character, but maybe he would be better suited as another boss battle, like Dracula.
Who else could fit that mold? Maybe a version of the Calamity Ganon? Andross?
Edit: Remembered Andross is an Assist Trophy. But something could still be done there, considering Rathalos is both.
Also, what about some version of the Mother Brain from Metroid and a fight with M. Bison? And of course the potential to bring back Master and Crazy Hands, Tabuu and Master Core to the boss battles.
I think my wishes of Mana Hero (Secret of Mana), Ark (Terranigma), and Crono (Chrono Trigger) won't come to fruition. I guess Square Enix has a better chance getting another rep in with Geno (Super Mario RPG) or someone from Dragon Quest.
Why do people still request Skull kid? What's his relevance in the Zelda series? What does he do in the game besides floating and talking to a fairy( Do not count the boss battle, that is NOT him)? I can't help but think that fans are just out of options for request, same for those requesting Waluigi. I mean, there are still Nintendo franchises not being represented, and yet they keep asking for more secondary characters?
It was the villain from Majora's Mask. Some people are voting for Zant, Ghirahim, or Vaati, but Skull Kid is probably the most iconic and coolest one, apart from Ganondorf.
My "Zelda characters in Smash" votes go to Impa, True Midna, and Urbosa still, also Tingle.
I don't see Skull Kid getting in at all. In general the way I see it, Smash only takes main protagonists or consistently present villains in a series (which is why Dark Samus made the cut, abieit as an Echo Fighter). The only one-off "side character" I can think of that got into Smash was Sheik, and that was mostly because Zelda had the transformation gimmick to kill two birds with one stone and Ocarina of Time was still mega popular.
Zelda is in a very weird position where it's hard to really add new characters without feeling a bit "whaaaaa...?" like with Young/Toon Link. Characters like Groose and Zant also fit that bill imo. Impa, though, is the closest I can think of that can fit since she's been in multiple Zelda games, and I think she could be a legitimate good choice for Smash.
That or I'm thinking way too one-dimentionally. But a lot of people tend to have a bit of unrealistic expectations in regards to Smash characters due to circumstances surrounding said characters and franchises.
Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill
I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!
Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
I know I am late to the party, but here's my opinion on the Direct:
plus Simon Belmont: Cool
plus King Rool: Finally! Fantastic addition. I voted for him in the Smash 4 ballot. He has moves from all the games!
plus Cool new items
minus Still no proper single-player, apart from Classic mode. I really hope the blurred option has to do something with single-player
minus Almost all the stages are old ones. This is a huge letdown for me
@Yosheel All of the colours in Ultimate pop out much more than in Smash 4. Comparing the two makes Smash 4 look super faded. I also love the extra details and textures they added. Eldin Bridge looks especially well done.
I don't see the reason why some people try to convince others that Smash isn't as big as they make it out to be. Like, does it even matter? SSBU will sell a lot, but we won't know how much until it's actually released. Saying "it's not as big" or whatever is irrelevant for now, and to me feels like a way to lower hype for the game more than anything.

A little side note on how popular Smash really is:
If you look at best selling lists, Smash is one of the highest selling, highest grossing fighting game series of all time, currently placed at number 3, a million short of the Street Fighter series, which is kinda unbelievable.
With Brawl it already had beaten the Mortal Kombat (rank 4) and Soul Calibur (rank 5) series.
Smash Ultimate is going to beat Street Fighter in sales and popularity shortly after release, and then its sales will continue to reach the number one spot, Tekken.
Wow most of the stages are like, actually remade or improved instead of being direct ports from the last game, that's quite impressive
This is no Wii U port at all. No one can see any original Wii U assets in this game.
All 103 stages are either brandnew or graphically improved. Just like the characters and everything else.
From the first footage on the first Smash direct, Smash fans were blown away by how everything looks so much better than last time on Wii U.
Daily reminder that Smash Bros. isn't as big or important as you think it is.
Which is why Smash 3DS alone sold 9 Million?
I get that it's no Pokemon, Elderscrolls, or GTA, but it's easily one of the biggest fighting games, and especially the biggest in what's otherwise the niche of platform fighters.
