@BrainOfGrimlock The grind is definitely optional, though man this reminds me of Mass Effect 1 in a lot of ways. The main storyline is always interesting and varied, plus every planet (other than the first) is gorgeous and has plenty of varied terrain of it's course. The big issue is that all the side content uses the same repeated layouts. Luckily, the game has a number of saving graces:
Combat is a blast. It can be brutally difficult at times, and you almost certainly will die repeatedly throughout, but it (almost) never feels unfair. If you die, you screwed up. Weaponry is great, I have the digital deluxe and I swap through every weapon depending on the circumstance
The characters are all quite varied and interesting, and the lore has remained intriguing as well so far. It's definitely not intended to be super serious (Think one of the better written kids show action-dramas vs something like Stargate Atlantis) and the conflict is rather black and white so far, but it's kept me entrenched.
Fox McCloud and his team are great... other than the first five seconds of their introduction practically being a plot hole (If you start the game as Fox, you already have Starlink tech before the Arwings get equipped with it at the end of the tutorial) I'm still early on in their plotline, but I have no doubts it'll be well done.
The repetitive nature of the design of the ruins is far less annoying later on in the game, as these become battlegrounds against significant opponents, instead of you just mowing everyone down when you arrive.
Honestly, I think the best way to go about the game is to focus on the main story / side stories, and just do whatever other stuff you come across. 100%ing it seems like a bad idea unfortunately, as that's how I usually play.
@HobbitGamer I don't have the toy, but the Vortex Missiles can be nasty, I rather like them. The vortexes they open are far smaller than the Imploder (maybe a third of the size) so opponents won't get stuck in them the way that they do with that weapon, but it is a great way to take down waves of enemies at once. 1v1 it's not very good though.
Okay sounds reasonable. One more question. Do you feel the starter pack is enough or should I invest in some other bits. If so what do you guys recommend?? I don't mind buying extra if they add enough to the game to justify the purchase.
Thanks all, some great feedback - really appreciate it! Haven’t played anything like this in a good while so reckon that will safeguard against/drown out any tedium for a while at least - think this will be next up, a final ‘palate cleanser’ before I get back on my usual RPG-horse

You'll most definitely want more ships and weapons. I think the starter pack gives you, what, a kinetic weapon and the Volcano chain gun? Oh, and the lasers built into the Arwing's wings (if you don't Link any weapons). And while kinetic weapons are decent all around weapons, you'll definitely want more options. And when things start going bad, which they will, two ships is no where near enough.
I personally mainly use the gravity missiles, stasis missiles, ice missiles, volcano chain gun, ice chain gun, and gravity chain gun. Which two I use depends on what I'm facing and their weaknesses. The gravity missiles are less effective in space battles, but are amazing in fights against ground based enemies or extractors.
Not gotten that far in the Star Fox side mission yet (want to get rid of the primes and dreadnought first), but if it's like other doors you need to break through you probably don't blow it up. Is there an option to pull it off using the tractor beam thing used to pick stuff up?
EDIT: If that doesn't work, experiment with different weapon elements?
This door is different from others. You have to go through a lazer beam tunnel to get to it. says to have to attach the missile the door but i don't know how you do it.
@farrow000 If you're talking about the door with a laser drill attached; once you place the warhead on the door, you'll need to go over to the laser drill and use the new prompt to activate it. Slippy will do his thing and the laser will hit the warhead.
(If you still need a warhead, fly to the upper-most hole above the closed door and past some lasers you'll find a warhead you can pluck)
Hope that helps!

@HobbitGamer I thought it was the door the missile is in front of. so the missile is for the big door outside? How do i get rid of the lazers in the tunnel?
hi, just a quick question, since i'm still confused about what you get in physical and digital:
is the arwing and fox included in the digital standard-edition?
since they are not explicitly mentioned in the eshop (at least the swiss eshop: https://www.nintendo.ch/de/Spiele/Nintendo-Switch/Starlink-Ba...
thx for any help!
Got playing on Starlik in easy mode to get used to the gaming with the physical ships and weapons and it is hard with the ship attached. But I do like the fighting style and flying and made it make for a different experience for me. Just first time playing took me for 5 hours before I realized it was 3 am and was like holy (&^(&( - I got work to get to. And man I paid for it got a pounding headache with tylenol to take for it. LOL
@SwitchForce Glad you like it!! I found the combat took some getting used to, as well. Space moreso, with the throttle on the left stick. The game can definitely be a time sink and one of those “ooo what’s over there?” traps. I’ll play some tonight maybe while I drop someone off at a meeting and wait on them. Other than that, this for the weekend

Well there were like 15 of these at my local best buy So I think I can comfortably hold off for a bit (especially if they might not have the game)

@HobbitGamer like to mention having the physical ships and weapons and pilot makes it more of a challenge and makes it more interesting seeing what you MOD the ship as to change the physical form literally. This games sinks time just like BoTW for me when I get going it's 4 hours lost at the minimum. Other thing is I kept pressing L instead of RL for weapons and kept looking behind I was what the (&(& was that. That was stressing during intensive battles. But I have to go back and scan a Warden enemy as one quest which I forgot and did a (doh). Now I have to go flying everywhere to find a enemy Warden to scan and hopefully I don't get hammered while scanning...
It’s supposed to cause enemies destroyed during Vanish to drop Rifts that extend the duration. I’ve yet to see one.
Also, the skill description for Vanish states that it breaks when you fire. That’s complete nonsense. That would make it the most useless skill in the game, and make several of her mechanics impossible to execute.
