@BLP_Software You could've played the American (and Japanese) Splatfest as well.
But we have a few European players here as well, including myself, but also several people from the UK and IIRC one member was from the Netherlands.
Who the hell prefers cake over ice cream? Colour me baffled.
I prefer neither, but I prefer Marina. @Nicolai What you wrote about the Callie/Marie and Pearl/Marina dynamic makes sense. Could it be that Nintendo is targeting slightly older players with Marina while Pearl (the devious rascal) is targeting younger players?
@PH03N1Xx86 I think using the Tenta missiles basically only makes sense when you have enemies in a spot where they can't evade quickly. @OuterTsuchinoko: Ah really? I only played two and a half matches in portable mode and it was really weird to have the screen moving all the time. Maybe it just takes some getting used to, I'll ty it again in SP mode next week.
Still plan on buying the full game so I can get better playing the single player before jumping back into multiplayer.
Yeah playing the SP is great for that. Btw if you still have the Wii U, buying the original game might still be worth it, with all the different special weapons and everything. There are still many matches going on (although that might decline starting next week ^^).
My nephew and niece had brought their switches over to my house and we all just sat around fighting for Team Ice Cream! We even had one round where we versed each other and it got really intense. My niece really got into it, dominating with her roller and screaming and giggling the whole time. I'm now really considering getting Splatoon 2 on launch day simply due to how much fun we had in such a short amount of time! XD
That sounds even better than any commercial could depict it. I'm pretty sure you guys will have tons of fun with the full game!
We're going to need a "Switch Multiplayer match organisation thread" from next week.Save this thread for talking about the game only. The Wii U equivalent was a great place for getting matches together.I'm hoping for some ARMS matches against the NL community too.
@shani Now I know how you guys couldn't find my room last night,I was Team Cake.
@BLP_Software
For me it was actually pretty convenient since I mostly play during the evenings or nights, but also because yesterday I was busy during the day.
@OorWullie Lol, ok that explains it. It's a relief though, since it means we should be able to play together in the regular game.
BTW I'd be up for some ARMS matches later (and on the other days as well).
And I also second you on the Switch Multiplayer match organisation thread. I think I'll go ahead and create one. @TheLZdragon Since you're a NL admin, could you pin that thread to the Switch forum?
@shani
Definitely try it, it's great, plus you can change the sensitivity for handheld mode only. I didn't do that though and it was fine. I bet I would be better if I found the best suited sensitivity for me. I have been wanting a portable Splatoon since before I even played the game. Back when one of the old 3DS Directs was being rumored to announce a portable Splatoon. So I'm jumping on being able to play this game off the tv and it did not disappoint at all. And it looks so good on the Switch screen.
@OuterTsuchinoko I too struggled playing on the handheld but I think with practise I can get used to it.I played mostly with the Pro which felt really good, either on the TV or in tabletop mode because like you say,the game looks so good on the Switch screen.I played some matches with split Joy-con too and I got on pretty well ,reminded me of playing with a Nunchuck and Remote combo.I found the most comfortable way to play with them split was to only have a wrist strap attached to the left Joy-con,I really struggle with the right analogue when a strap is attached.I'm not quite sure why i preferred having the left strap attached though,I don't use it for MK8D but it just felt right when playing Splatoon 2.
This game was a ton of fun. I was kind of skeptical going into the first testfire because I'd never played Splatoon 1 and it seemed kind of basic and kid-oriented, but after playing that and the Splatfest, I'm gonna buy it ASAP. I just hope the stores near me get it in stock on day 1. They didn't get MK8D when it first came out, and that's a bigger/more popular game series than Splatoon, at least for now, so I'm not getting my hopes up. (I live in a pretty small town, so the stores only have so many games in stock)
Will there be any way to change the weapon specials when the full game comes out? I liked the dualies during the first testfire, but now that they've apparently swapped specials with the Splattershot, I like the Splattershot a lot more. It's probably just my lack of experience with the game, but the tenta missiles don't seem useful at all compared to the jetpack special.
@KirbyTheVampire There'll be different variants which have the same base weapon but different specials and subs (e.g. Tentatek Splattershot will have different a special and sub than the Splattershot). How much variety is there in the full game? Well we'll see in less than 5 days.
@OuterTsuchinoko Thanks, I will, although it probably will be only for testing purposes.
I can't see myself playing Splatoon anywhere else then at home - after all, you need a constant internet connection and I'm not keen on losing rank points because the mobile internet connection temporarily dropped out or is too weak...
I'm really happy they have seemingly toned down the specials in this game. They were legit crazy in Splatoon.
Actually, I think the specials in Splatoon 2 are way more crazy and frantic than in the previous game.
@KirbyTheVampire That's the thing when people only judge something from outside without trying it out (this is not meant as an accusation though, don't take it personal ). This happens a lot with Nintendo games - although there arguably are some where it might actually be true.
Games like Splatoon (or also ARMS to some extent) have an awful lot of depth which only becomes apparent once you play it or watch someone (who's reasonably good at it) play it.
You haven't even seen ranked yet, it's more tactical and 'serious' than Turf War (which was my least favourite mode in Splatoon 1 because it's the most basic mode where basically everyone wins, even the losers).
You can't change the weapon sets, they are bundled by the developers for balancing reasons. But there will be a lot of different options and I'm pretty sure they will add new versions/sets later as they did in Splatoon 1.
I'd definitely recommend not focussing too much on the specials (but of course everyone has their favourites) but rather to look at the weapon sets in their entirety.
Also, try out all weapon types and models. To expand your own repertoire (you might be surprised what else you might like) but also to learn how they work so you can defeat enemies using those weapons. It's definitely useful to have a basic understanding of every weapon in the game.
Oh and the demo didn't even let you use and change your own gear! This is a field of its own which you should definitely explore, there are lots of gear abilities which give you different benefits. They are roughly explained in the demo too (hit 'Y' and then somewhere in the menu), but after the release there will surely be more detailed user-created lists and tables online which tell you exactly what every ability does.
And just as I'm writing this, I realize that I'm nerding out again. Why can't it be Friday already? ^^
@shani I mean crazy more in the sense of OPness. If you mean to say that they're crazy in design and aesthetic then I would agree, but in terms of actual balance. The ones in Splatoon 2 so far I would argue are far more fair.
@-Green- Ah okay, I can't really say anything about that because I haven't seen all of them in action myself (apart from videos of course).
Although they did nerf and buff the specials in Splatoon 1 numerous times, so I'd say at the end everything was very balanced. But you still might be right! I really don't have enough 'data' on that, but I trust Nogata and his team to provide more balance from the start, so what you're saying makes sense. So far every part of the game I've experienced myself has been definitely improved upon.
@Luke64 It was X but now with the right analogue stick in a different place it makes sense to have B as jump.I actually got used to it pretty quickly but I can't get my head around pressing X to bring up the map.I'm sure it'll feel natural in time.
My hype for this game is through the roof now.For some reason I just wasn't really feeling any before,I was more hyped for ARMS.Now I've been playing ARMS for a week I can say that hype was fully justified,I love it but Splatoon is something special.I burned myself out on the original to the point I never went back to it or even had any desire to.I can now imagine myself doing the same all over again.
@shani In general, specials in 1 granted invulnerability to easily turn the tides of engagements, total area denial and, in the case of the echolocator, complete knowledge of the enemy's whereabouts.
2's specials don't have nearly the same benefits. The closest thing to invulnerability is Splashdown, which is a one-time use with limited range. It and all of the specials seem designed to work more closely with your team, since they're pretty easy to dodge on their own and tend to leave you wide open if used at the wrong time.
@shani Yeah, it's definitely deeper than I expected. It even seems deeper than a lot of traditional shooters out there, which can quite often be summed up as games where you just run around and shoot mindlessly, with only a few game modes that are actually worth playing, and very limited character customization.
ARMS is also a game that I really didn't expect to be as deep as it is. Back then, I could kind of see that Splatoon might be deeper than I first assumed, but I firmly believed ARMS was just Wii Sports boxing 2.0.
Apparently I was one of three other people that chose team cake. So much for the less popular team winning.
The connection was pretty solid (only a few disconnects between rounds over the course of a few hours) and I love the new maps. Is it just me or did they make some minor changes to Moray Towers? I don't remember all of those shortcut ropes in the original game.
Dual splaties are definitely my favorite weapon in the game so far. LOVE the rolling mechanic. In one match, two rollers were coming at me. I splatted one, rolled back to avoid getting killed and then splatted the other enemy. VERY cool.
Can't wait for this game to come out!
