Played for about three hours, and only about a third of my matches were actually versus Team Cake. And most of those matches, well... didn't end too well for Team Ice Cream. It was still a lot of fun, though!
@yokokazuo: Yeah, good games! Nice picture, by the way!
@Vee_Flames Somehow I doubt that. I have a feeling this is going to be something like Ninjas vs. Pirates all over again. Ice Cream is clearly way more popular, but we'll have to see how wins are weighted this time.
Cake players, if you pull this one, know that you did so with integrity and remaining true to yourself, and not just some pretty face. I salute thee, as a member of team Ice Cream.
With that out of the way, I had a lot of fun learning the new mechanics and weapons. None of the specials are free splats, you must know how to use them well. Splashdown is the only one that gives invincibility, and that seemed to be the most costly one. Still, super jumping and crashing like a meteor to save teammates is a blast. Highlight of the roller for me, and can't to mess around with beakons.
Charger took some getting used to, but if you know the time you can hold a charge while swimming you can basically roam the entire map (ink permitting) with a shot ready at a moment's notice. And I think I actually got two splats with one shot once!
Dualies were fun, but I don't think Tenta Missiles work particularly well for them. For it and a lot the specials, you'll have better luck getting splats (or assists. Love that you can see those) if you seek out enemies in conflict, using their own specials, or in unassailable locations. Burst bomb does work well with it; the roll dodge is best used only to evade fire or firing down a narrow corridor due to the momentary pause in movement. Otherwise, soften up your targets with the burst and fire normally.
Incidentally, you can see a list of available specials and subs in the game by pressing minus while looking at a weapon. I learned that the bubble-wand weapon is actually a special (that can be countered by enemy fire, so not great without team support) and that sprinklers are back, but they now weaken over time.
It's official: Team Ice Cream wins Splatoon 2's first ever Splatfest (in the West, that is). Not that there was any doubt But good games to Team Cake.
Hehe...
@yokokazuo I might switch to charger myself. The new handheld screen is amazing for that.
To add to the Pearl sympathizer arguments, the nice thing about Pearl is that she's a lot more like the common squid than the other performers; her looks and her voice. I guess she seems more relatable that way. That, and she just completes the duo well.
Previously, Callie and Marie had a "left and right" dynamic: opposites, but equal. Callie is always left, she's always purple, she usually sings first but shares an equal role with Marie. They could have done another "left and right" pair, but instead Pearl and Marina are more like Foreground and Background. Pearl may be on the left in newscasts, but she's sitting on a comfy chair vs behind a table, she's always in front on stage, and she has a controlling personality; Marina's always in the background, singing background vocals, and has a shy personality that suggests she prefers it back there. It's much more polarizing than Callie and Marie were. Yeah, Callie and Marie had different personalities, but you could still see why the community was so split between the two. Perhaps its a good thing the community is so Marina heavy; it just means that Marina is playing a more likable professional role, whereas Pearl fills another void entirely, being the devious rascal you associate with common Inklings.
Wait, what do you mean by "the West?" Do America and Europe have the same splatfest now?
It's kinda funny how they change the way they calculate it for each Splatfest. If one were so paranoid, they could say Nintendo is fixing each one to get their desired results.
@Nicolai NA and EU had the same Splatfest theme and... as far as I know, EU didn't have seperate Splatfest results. It must have been combined with NA's.
@Vee_Flames I see. Funny how Japan started bringing splatfest themes from the West. I doubt we'll get a Lemon Tea vs Milk Tea, but maybe we'll get a Love vs Money.
DAT moment when U had to work during the splatfest....
.....Also was on TEAM ICE CREAM! Now to wait until I can rev up my rollers again to splat @TheLZdragon since THESE squidaroo didn't forget, ohhhhhhh nooooooo ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I mean, something something splatside
I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!
I'm not keen politics since that stuff is spooky, I'd rather watch SpongeBob over Fox News anyways!
That Splatfest was awesome. This was my first one since I got into Splatoon on Wii U after Splatfests were over. I loved getting a taste of Splatoon 2 again also. It really feels like it fits the hardware perfectly. Love using the motion controls in portable mode as well. It was a little tricky at first but then I fell right into it. Had some great matches. Can't wait for this week to be up so I can start dumping hundreds of hours in without limitation.
The Splat Dualies are great, still love them as much as the first testfire. I also started to notice how dangerous the rollers are too with that new vertical swipe. I might have to try getting good with rollers now myself as well since they kept putting me into some tough situations.
My hope is that the splatfest was only 4 hours because it was a demo and when the full game comes out, they will return to all day. Also get rid of separating NA and EU.
Right, this game has got me - hook, line and sinker! That was super, super fun!
I enjoyed the original 'Testfire' event a lot - but I was only able to play one of the 1hour sessions (which wasn't really enough time) & had to turn the motion controls off because I had a dodgy Joy-Con, which left me feeling at somewhat of a disadvantage and kinda affected my enjoyment of the game...
...no such problems this time around! I mean, sure, I wasn't exactly good with the motion controls - far from it - but, over the course of my roughly 2hours with the game, I felt I was steadily getting better and better - and that just changed everything for me! I wish I could jump back in right now!
I really love the layers and layers of strategy in particular...if the other team starts to get on top of you, a change of tactic or some out-of-the-box thinking can help to swing momentum back your way - love it! The maps were great - the weapon variety was really interesting - the matches were just the right length - the progression system seems like it'll be pretty fun...I NEED THIS GAME IN MY LIFE! <3 WOW!
I don't care who won (though it was obvious that I was on the losing side on this one from the very beginning) because we all got to play Spla2n a week early.
