@Snaplocket It's probably to seperate it from the "main" games. To be honest I do find that too often even with it being set in England, France or whatever style region all the games don't feel that different so this could be a nice departure. A different setting helped Sun & Moon be one of my favourite entries, of course the other side of that is Ruby and Sapphire's too much water.

This game takes place in Pangea

The game being set in the past has a very simple and logical reason:

It's based on the wild area, and the less civilization they have to add, the easier it will be to develop.

This way they can set it in Sinnoh, without having to work around the expectations of how, what we know as "Sinnoh", should look.

@Eel It still sounds more ambitious than I would give them credit for, they could have just said nondescript past from somewhere without having to commit to making a snowy area, water area etc from Sinnoh at all.

@jump Well, using an existing map as a base gives them, well, a base to follow.

And Sinnoh is certainly a great region to translate into a wild area. Being an island with a huge central mountain, marshlands, grassy plains, rivers, flower meadows, etc.

There's even a desert on the smaller island where the battle area is in the originals, assuming we will be able to visit that here. They could also just add a desert where one of the cities would be anyway.

I honestly am excited for this. Cautiously excited however, since some stuff in that trailer looked a bit unpolished, and the world looked kind of barren. I hope there's more to this game than just exploring and catching pokemon. However, I have to say that this game looks way better than Sword and Shield ever did, and I can't believe this was made by Gamefreak themselves.

Can we all take a minute to appreciate that GF picked three different starters from three different regions and didn't end up choosing a Kanto starter?

Seriously, I'm so glad to see that. The three starters we got all have great designs IMO, too.

@Harmonie Agreed. They also fixed Cynadquil's model, and added the fire back! Not to mention as well, that all three of those starters have new models. Oshawott has a 3D mouth now, instead of it just being a texture.

Going by the look of this building, it isn't set too far in the past. Looks like the late 1800s / early 1900s, rather than the year 1200 or so.

It's apparently Feudal Sinnoh though.

@VoidofLight nothing really screams "feudalism" about what we got to see though.

It just looks old timey. Mid 1800 seems like a good approximation.

The "town" looked feudal Japan, but the building not quite. Who knows what's going on. Maybe that building is in China where they breed the starters.

That does sound like something they would do, they literally took one of the major cities in the last game and turned into a single alley way.

@Octane I mean, the town has at least one brick building with glass windows, and street lights. If they're electric, that would put it in or after the Meiji period

@Eel You're right. Not really feudal Japan in that case.

It's intriguing that they are finally doing something interesting with the series. Looks like they will be using existing pokemon rather than making new ones, which honestly is a really good thing. I woudn't mind if they just stopped introducing new mon for the next few gens. I'm not too hopeful about this though. I don't think of Gamefreak as a very capable developer even on smaller titles, so taking on a seemingly "open world" game as one of their annual releases seems laughable to me. I anticipate extreme over hype and incredulous backlash when the game releases.

@EOTW I mean, there's a chance that there could be some new pokemon introduced, since earlier today they leaked a slideshow presentation for the game, before it was even announced, and some of the pokemon silhouettes shown there looked kind of different from ones seen before. They could be regional forms added, or pokemon species that went extinct before Diamond and Pearl.

EOTW

@VoidofLight That's cool. I'm not opposed to new pokemon or anything, I just think Gamefreak needs all the help it can get to keep up with the insane demands of the pokemon company. New mon exacerbate the workload a lot, I'd imagine.
