Retailers need a run-up of at least a few months between announcement and a console's launch. Keep in mind the Switch was announced in October 2016 and released in March 2017. An announcement in June for release in Holiday 2024 makes most sense. Probably November 2024 as the Holiday shopping season traditionally begins the day after Halloween.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,536 games (as of December 14th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)
Idk much at all about business stuff, but isn't it a thing that they'd want to reveal it before the end of the fiscal year (March 31st) to boost their year end report or something? I do feel like a Spring reveal makes sense though. I feel like we'll have the real last switch direct in February, but it'll be pretty barren of new first party stuff or maybe even a mini. Then in spring we get the Switch 2 initial reveal trailer similar to OG switch's and then a massive presentation in June that details everything.
At the same time though, June feels a little too late to reveal something like the rumored 3D Mario launch title if it releases in October or November. I know the OG switch had its presentation just 2 months before launch, but those were far more desperate times for Nintendo and we already knew a ton about its big launch title (BOTW) at the time.

The only counter argument I have for that is do they release earlier in the year so many "core" Nintendo fans can get a console before a restock in time for the holidays for more casual gamers/parents buying for kids etc? I'm really not sure at this point.
I’m personally feeling a game-awards reveal of the codename, a late-march/April reveal,, a june presentation, and a November release
It just seems about right

@DiamondCore I mean Nintendo hasn’t announced anything at the game awards in years, but breaking that pattern suddenly to officially confirm something as big as their new console would be the most Nintendo thing ever lol.
Now that I think of it though I do think you’re right about a big reveal at the awards even if it’s not the new console. 2024 is seemingly gonna be a huge year for them and they’ll probably need more than just the usual 3 presentations a year to get all their info out, especially since they want to slow down on OG switch as little as possible. Maybe they’ll start the extra reveals this December and give us something like… idk… Prime 4?
@DiamondCore@Noble_Haltmann this year it’s being held early December so probably not wise to make any announcements, even a hint, of a new console. Don’t want people to return consoles they just bought or put potential buyers off buying one.
I don’t think Nintendo will do anything this year at TGA. Next year they’ll almost definitely announce something at it because they’ll have a new console on the market and they’re gonna want to keep it hyped and in the spotlight.

@dionysos283 no, this has nothing to do for Switch sucessor, it just licensing isseus, i expect Nintendo to anounce Switch sucessor in summer(june/july) for fall/holiday launch(septembre/octobre)
@Noble_Haltmann Prime 2-4 feels the most likely if anything for the Game Awards. Judging by reviews, it looks like in terms of Game Awards nominees we'd be seeing a repeat of 2017 (BotW + Mario Odyssey followed up with TotK + Mario Wonder). Nintendo's biggest Game Awards presence was 2017 in terms of announcements, there was BotW Champions Ballad DLC shadow drop and the announcement of Bayonetta 1-3 for Switch (1+2 bundle in February 2018, 3 in development) so that could be followed up with Prime 2+3 bundle and a first footage reveal of Prime 4.
It wouldn't work particularly well if Prime 4 is crossgen but if it instead turned out to be a Spring 2024 Switch game (April/May is empty currently), that could work very well.
@Grumblevolcano Yeah, I'm really torn about what they'll do with Prime 4 as well. As stunning as it would look with new gen graphics, I feel like the development restart was way too soon for it to be made specifically for the new console,. Especially since Retro is studios involved and probably would have needed to have a dev kit way back in early 2019. If it is an OG switch title though it would have to release in Summer of next year in order to have breathing room before the new console launch in Fall. If that's the case then they would definitely have to announce it at the game awards, which I don't think is too likely now that I realize there have been zero first party, non-smash announcements since 2017. Fingers crossed though!
@Noble_Haltmann@FragRed@Grumblevolcano Well, a reveal of the codename at the game awards does seem like something not out of the realm of possibiilty, I doubt people will return switch hardware for just basic confirmation that the next console is in the works (its quite obvious as of now)
I think what’ll happen is they might reveal a teaser/trailer for Metroid Prime 4 finally, and in the end card of the trailer, it’ll show a release window and “Coming to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo (codename for Switch 2)”, then briefly acknowledging the codename if anything

@Noble_Haltmann Game Awards last year had Bayonetta Origins and Fire Emblem Engage Expansion Pass so there's still a sense of giving Geoff Keighley announcements that fit the show. There was no TotK presence but then again that game would've stole the attention away from everything else.
@Grumblevolcano Ohhhh wow I completely forgot they revealed those last year, thanks for the catch! I could definitely see them going a bit bigger once again and showing some Metroid this year then. Seems like they always show less kid-oriented games at the awards to cater to the audience, so Metroid would fit right in. My guess would be Prime 2 and 3 confirmed followed by another vague re-confirmation of 4 with a 2024 release window.
@Grumblevolcano I don’t know if it’s just me but I’m finding the indie Directs to be less interesting in terms of what’s showcased with each one they do.

My personal bet is that since we're done with Directs for the year, we'll probably get an Indie World Showcase sometime in December, maybe the 14th. (Edit: I was right about the number at least...)
In terms of Directs next year, February's will probably land on the 7th or 21st, considering the fact that Nintendo (probably) wouldn't want to put out a direct on Valentine's Day. June's definitely not going to have an E3 so my Bet is on June 15th, and that Direct will probably be the one to give a release date on Paper Mario TTYD remake. And September is easy, the 4th or nothing. If Nintendo airs a Direct on the 11th... I'll start praying.
@skywake in my line of work, we use the phrase, " when everything is urgent, nothing is urgent" To describe certain customers. In the gaming world, " when everything is ww/tp HD, nothing is ww/tp hd" lol. Both of these have been rumored so long at this point, it's like themes. They're just not happening. I own both on gc/wii/wii u. So im set anyway.
