@DiamondCore It wasn't in response to you. I was just browsing the ongoing discussions and getting a sense of the general tone. I wasn't picking up on who exactly said what due to the popularity of the thread and volume of posts (that and I was trying to cook, look after the kids and so on).
And I don't know to be honest. I saw someone say that it's "entitlement" (maybe that was you, maybe it wasn't) and I just don't agree. These games aren't cheap, including Nintendo's remasters/remakes.
My criticisms are:
Too much filler
Too many predictable releases
Too much Mario
Not enough variety
Too many remasters/remakes
Remasters/remakes in general aren't exciting
I agree with a lot of this. I can only do so much Mario. I think it helps that a lot of these indies aren't doing anything for me. Sure, Trombone Champ looks amazing, and I'll be checking out the Dan the Diver demo, but that's about it for me.
Yeah, it's just Mario overdose.
I actually said to myself as they got to the "one final thing" part of the presentation "well, it can't be a Mario game, as we're already getting Super Mario RPG, Super Mario Wonder, Mario vs Donkey Kong, Princess Peach Showtime, plus they showed Luigi's Mansion 2 and the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Wave 6 DLC"
And then I groaned as soon as it started and I saw the star.
Then I saw it was another remake and I groaned even more.
And I know people have been clamouring for a remaster or remake of The Thousand Year Door for a while, but I am just not one of those people. I really don't see how the game can benefit from a remake. It doesn't feel necessary and (I get it, this is my personal opinion, but...) the game is highly overrated.
And people say "what do you expect? Nintendo is winding down the Switch and preparing for the next console", but it just feels like, outside a couple of releases, they have been doing that for a while. They always seem to do this with their consoles and, I don't know, but I feel Sony and Microsoft are both better at not making it feel quite so much like you're just hanging around waiting for the successor when their console generations are coming to an end. Maybe it's just me, but their consoles seem to run pretty seamlessly into one another with decent releases overlapping over the console generations. Whereas Nintendo they always have these "slumps" when they are preparing for the next console.
Honestly the highlight of this year with Nintendo for me, is that its destroyed a lot of my cynicism towards Mario as a franchise. Like wow, remember when Mario was a charming, delightful series and character and not just...brand names to build enjoyable gameplay around? It's like Nintendo saw Luigi's Mansion 3 and came to a realization.
This is the most optimistic I've been about the series as a whole since Mario Galaxy.

Too much Mario? From a Nintendo direct? That’s like saying there’s too much nintendo characters in a super smash bros game. It’s to be expected after all, mario is the Nintendo mascot.
I don't agree with this. Nintendo is far more than just Mario. They have tons of IPs.
Back to the remakes. It’s common tradition these last few console generations that more older games get remakes and remasters because the current console is on its last legs. All the major games planned have been released and announced already, the sparkly new stuff like Prime 4 is saved for the next generation which will be much fresher.
Again though, I don't think the only two choices are the remakes they have chosen and AAA big budget major releases like Metroid Prime 4.
@Reprise Yeah, it’s fair to complain about too much Mario.
I personally don’t mind it because what we’re getting is all games I am interested in but I can totally see how it’s annoying.

(not replying to anybody in particular) To anyone who is a little confused on rather TTYD got remade completely or ported, here’s some comparison screenshots
Its definitely not a port or basic retexturing, it’s actually a remake!

I admitted I almost got heart attack and literally I was screaming when I heard the song played during the trailer of Super Crazy Rhythm Castle by Konami because the song that played was
SMOOOOCH・∀・ by Kors k from DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION X2 !!! 😃😃😃
@Reprise I agree about the options. Yeah, they can make ports. Yeah, they're going to release big games. But if the Switch truly is winding down, I want the weird stuff.

@TheBigBlue@Reprise with the iminence of the Switch sucessor, we should all temper our expectation, expecting OMG new 2D/3D Donkey Kong game for Switch, this huge reveals is saved for Nintendo next hardware, also this Mario overdose is due to Nintendo captalizing on the Super Mario Bros movie hype, Nintendo: let take advantage of Mario movie hype, and release a bunch of Mario games
I never understood it when people complain about a remake of an old title. To me TTYD is a new game, I didn't have a GameCube so anything GC era is fresh for me. And given the GameCube was 20 years ago I think it's fair to say a large portion of the Switch audience is in the same boat
I guess technically there's nothing stopping me from tracking down a copy. Then maybe ripping the ISO on my day 1 Wii or even tracking down a memory card and playing it there. But then I'd have to deal with scaling or potentially emulation issues if I went that route having aquired the ISO..... or I could just buy the HD remaster and then also have a portable version that looks significantly better
I like the Paper Mario series, mostly the N64 and Wii releases. To me this is basically just more of that. And new because I've never played it. If that's not you? Fair enough. But not everything is for you

Not gonna lie, I completely burst out laughing when I saw the graphics for the tomb raider ports as I thought it was a brand new switch game before my brain kicked in and realized these are ports from the 90s

I was baffled how many people were upset that they’re remaking the game instead of just re-releasing the og. I don’t get what’s wrong with remaking an old game and charging full price, when it’s significantly cheaper than the price the game is going for now.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
I agree remakes and remasters are a great thing. I think as many great games as possible should be on the most up to date hardware. It's just the lack of variety and how safe and predictable these choices feel. Super Mario RPG felt surprising and I did not see that one coming, so I will give them that one. But then the Paper Mario series just felt like an evolution of that and so The Thousand Year Door feels like "more of the same" (yes, I have played both, and they are different, but both are still Mario RPGs...)
The Paper Mario games always just felt like a B series or filler to me. Like Mario Party or Mario Sports titles. Fun, they have their fans, some games are better than others, but ultimately not something worthy of closing off a Direct as a surprise announcement in my opinion (regardless of whether the Switch is "winding down" or not").
There are tons of games I would rather see remade or remastered.
F-Zero GX
Chibi-Robo!
Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (if we really need more Mario)
Mario Party Superstars DLC (probably a bit late for that now, but I am still surprised we didn't get any)
Metroid Prime 2 and 3 remastered
Donkey Kong Country Returns
That's just my opinion though. And whilst I understand not everything is going to suit me, I think this is the first Direct that has had absolutely nothing I have been interested in. Zilch.
@VoidofLight Sometimes the changes made in remakes compared to the originals are divisive and so when a "perfect" game gets a remake announcement people get concerned that it'll be worse than the original. RE4 Remake had a similar initial reception though in the end that turned out well.
This setup about changes is the same reason why people don't want a Super Metroid remake to happen.
@FishyS Switch 2 reveal in March with June Direct being dedicated to the big holiday launch titles and maybe one or two early 2025. I feel there’s still one last Switch focused Direct to be in February though just to promote what’s left for the system for the following months.
