Ok, g maccao.... I've never been this frustrated with anything smaller than a rath. Except underwater laggi. What am i missing? Haven't got him once. Hub quests (boot) version with 2 players.

@ReaderRagfish yeah it's the leaping attacks that destroy me. One mistake and I'm carted. I did upgrade to bone HH and got him down to nesting, but one potion left and his lap caught me at an odd angle. I miss grinding g jaggi. This guy's annoying. I guess I'll try an upgraded Lance next and try countering, but I'm betting the leap attack staggers.

@Tsurii I'll take you up on that =)

@Tsurii I'm glad to hear I'm not just totally nuts. I mean I know I'm bad at MH, always have been, always will be. But I've never thought I was THAT bad.

I haven't challenged the dromes yet in this game. I do recall them being annoying in past games, but I do think I was farming them for some armor without it being too awful. Not Lagi levels of awful. Maybe they're worse with worse moves in this game though, that was probably 3U. Not looking forward to it. Velocidrome was going to be my farming target next to get the biggest horn upgrade available now (and just plain old awesome looking swinging around a giant velocidrome head..... )

But yeah, Maccao is honestly not very fun right now. I really liked HH...I just did the jaggi run quest and just butchered everything rapidly. Never expected that kind of success with it. It feels different than hammer, but there's more to it. It's pretty fun.....I can't believe I may want to be an HH main...always thought it was a support weapon that wasn't worth it if you weren't playing with a full party. (I still like hammer, but between the two HH is a little more to it.) It was my first upgrade to the bone model.

But...I got Maccao down to nesting...but couldn't kill him. I also bought the bone lance...I'll try tanking him next. He's too fast for GL IMO....by the time you get into the windups he's gone. Or steamrolling you. Plus the GL upgrade I want is bnahabra one and I can't get the wings yet. If that fails I'll try the bone CB. Might also be too slow for him. If that fails, maybe I'll roll an HBG after all.

You guys tell me to stick to 1-3 weapons, and I think I'm fixating on HH, Lance, GL and CB. Adding the whole gunner thing isn't a fun sounding choice. Though I still haven't built any armor yet. I guess one little bowgun can't hurt...can it?

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@ReaderRagfish Know what else helps calm them down? A freaking mallet to their skull, that's what! Yeah, hammer's really fun And HH. (Except recitaling for him sucks and leaves you too vulnerable.)

You know I don't tend to use traps....It's been a while since I've done trapping, I barely remember how it works.

I was never really good with the Hammer. I barely hit the broad side of a Monster let alone the head =*(

My friend Anthony just started playing. Saw the notification while I was watching YouTube that he was playing. Ha! Been trying to get that guy into the series for years. Told him to just get your bearings and let me know, and I'm ready to hunt

@ReaderRagfish
They will. Most of the time the rare drops are used when upgrading weapons. Occasionally for armor but, mostly upgrading weapons.

Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced

Finally beat g maccao.... GL (wide) coop with IG.

IG player is looking into hbg/lbg. Which one is generally better (casual play), and is the free infinite ammo useful at all? Buying endless ammo send impractical unless you know that you need

@Tsurii wait, what are you talking about Dromes being more annoying than G. Maccao. I spent a week trying and failing to nail Maccao before finally toppling him. I nervously went into Velocidrome so I can build me a Velocidrome Balloon horn......I soloed him in the Hub quest (teammate was AFK) with little trouble with GL (Aerial style), including a mounting and head damage subquest. He was fairly easy compared to Maccao! Then I went to Bulldrome coop and nailed him in 12 minutes without even dipping into the potions I brought with me with Lv2 iron hunting horn.

What the heck, G. Maccao does not belong in the HR1 quests....he seems to be a damage sponge that hits like a rocket. The thing should be next to Rath. Here I was thinking the game was twice as hard as 4U and it's just him. (Ok, I haven't tried lagombi, he probably will give me trouble....he always does....)

The really unfortunate thing though is I happen to be really attached to my Rogue Gunlance, or at least, wide fire gunlances in general......I don't know when the next wide becomes available...... And it's unfortunately a maccao kit....so I'm going to have to farm that jerk if I want my upgrades..... That's really bad news.

Much as I love my former CB, I still can't get the feel for vanilla lance, and hammer's quite fun, but I'm feeling like HH/GL(wide) are going to be my mains this time.

HH just rolls fine with Guild style. No major advantage to change it up. Gunlance....I don't have the reflexes for Adept perfect guards that people like. Some say Striker is good for wides (and only wides) I was going to focus on Guild, but......Aerial is pretty dang interesting. In addition to the leap for mounts which apparently works pretty well to leap, fire back, then slam) it replaces the poke-poke-slam that leaves you vulnerable with a plain old triple poke (a lot safer), leaving slams for aerial leaps, but most importantly the backhop is replaced by a huge forward leap. I think I'm a lot less likely to get into trouble with the forward leap, at the cost of a fraction of second of vulnerability when facing the shield away from the monster. The other catch is there's no free charge blast on A while shielding, you have to poke before you shoot, and can only shoot a charged shell. That takes some getting used to.

Two very different, very fun weapons that are very different from my old weps. Never ever thought I'd love HH and GL. I also gave LS a spin. Not a favorite, but I could like it in a pinch. Never got into it before.

@Tsurii Yeah it was the infinite ammo I was referring to (I suppose that's normal 1). I'm not too familiar with the bowguns, so I'm kind of helping from the sidelines with little knowledge. Of course stockpiling even LV2 ammo with how much is required to take monsters down seems mightly expensive. How do you raise the funds to keep stockpiling that quantity of ammo?

And does the standard 1 scale with the gun raw at all? If so it's not that bad actually. I did some testing with the base petrified hbg/lbg and the infinite normal 1 against the jaggies/jaggia trash mob and it mowed through them decently enough. Not the fastest thing in the world, but not unusuably slow either....good enough I'd feel confident having someone non-stop pelting a monster with it from range while I was shieldwalling him. But that only matters if it scales with the gun. Do other guns come with better ammo, and/or do they all have an infinite supply of normal 1?

That's just funny, you're an HR150+ hunter, I'm like a career HR5, and I don't mind the dromes as much as you. Maybe in the rematch he'll cart me, but Velocidrome just didn't seem bad at all. Soloed him in Hub (aren't they tougher in hub?). Sure I ran through some potions...I may have been down to my last (9 first aid + 5 I brought with me) but nothing like Maccao. I didn't even take a stamina meal like I did for Maccao. Maccao, the one-shot wonder, any minor mistake and you're done for. I had to cheese him with just taking all his leaps on the shield. Vdrome let me get under his belly and wyvern's fire him.

I do agree though, I hate all the "bird types"....the dromes, maccao, kut-ku. They're so erratic and hyper at all times. I find I can't predict their attacks too well. Lagombi is a PITA too. I have a negative image of Lagi but that comes from his underwater days. The fear never goes away. I do find I can't fully predict the "birds". The dromes though move in more avoidable lines and face you straight on more times than not though. Maccao has a bad mix of attacks: The temper tantrum attack where he just stamps up and down rapidly and flails the tail gets me a lot. The regular claw leaps, and then that obnoxious tail leap that covers the entire map in a second....worse he does fake-outs with it which really annoys me. You prepare for the leap, he fakes and then goes into another attack.

I really don't want to farm him to upgrade my prized wide GL I can get the first upgrade with the parts I already got. But the other two, who knows. And, there's only three upgrade tiers so it's steep.

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@Tsurii LOL, thaat's awful. Amazingly pretty for a PS2 game though. But yeah, 1 wasn't terribly popular...like....at all....for a reason apparently

I'm glad I'm not the only one that hates kut-ku (and dromes for that matter, and maccao.) Truly miserable things. But at least the dromes aren't maccao bad )

That's interesting that it sounds like you aren't a fan of great jaggi either? He was always my weapons test program He annoyed the heck out of me, but went down easy enough to reliably test stuff on (testing trash mobs doesn't help much since they play totally different than bigger monsters.)

I'm glad I picked up the series with G. Jaggi in it as the first, then. May not have stuck with it in those earlier versions.

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@ReaderRagfish Khezu.....ugh....it's a gigantic leech with wings. I don't care how it fights, I just don't want to have to see it, ever.

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@ReaderRagfish Wait, how does a PSP game look that good? I don't recall anything on PSP looking that good.

@Tsurii LOL, ok, yeah, I like G. Jaggi...if only as a beating post. I'd farm him 20 times in the past two games I haven't done Garuga yet. I'm avoiding Kutku....I know I'm going to hate it. Maybe after Maccao I'll hate it less? Maccao had the tell for his worst attack, but the fact that he'd fake it often, then rage, then do the tantrum.....Kutku even sucks in world. Just random outbursts. Very much like fighting real wild animals I guess....but there's a reason nobody does that with a flipping knife.

@Tsurii Ahh, yeah, hate him too Has it really been since 4 that I did Kut-Ku? Wow.

@NEStalgia I'll recommend to you what I'd recommend to anyone: try Protect Prowler.

Some people hate on cats — and granted, if you're playing solo and trying for fast times, then it's probably not the best option. However, if you're like me, and successful completion of a quest is more important to you than beating it as fast as possible, then the "four-legged fighting machine" might be worth giving a try.

All the EX hunts I've been a part of that failed, were because the hunters were the ones who died. So even if cats are a little slower, whatever time you gain by playing with a better weapon, is quickly rendered moot when you're playing quests over (and over... and OVER) again.

And I'll also mention: Playing as a Prowler will give you more margin for error as you learn various monsters; and they don't require much resources, so you can save up until you're ready for better equipment, and you won't have to spend zenny and parts on gear you're only going to use for a short time.

@FattyWhale_42 LOL. Ok, so I took your advice and tried the cats. What the heck did I play? It's adorable. Infinite stamina and automatic weather resistance is awesome cheat mode for gathering. I just like running around as a cat infinitely....it's like the parade of Pikachus in my very own home.

However, I tried to take down Lagombi. Two players playing cats. Damaging him was....impossible. I don't have any gear upgrades for cats (and don't fully understand the part requirements for their upgrades....and the upgrade parts don't look much better than default parts?) So it's just stock equipment. But I boomeranged him, lunged at him, magically (though I don't know how) mounted him 3 times.....he exhausted himself several times. He still wasn't even limping. I got carted twice, sent player 2 to hide, ran back to the bed 4 times since there are no healing potions, and ultimately ran out of time with sore hands.....

Am I doing it wrong, or are cats just that weak? It's a shame too because the unlimited stamina and sheer overload of squee made it a blast until that last 50 minutes of pure misery

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

I'll have to give it all another go. The upgrade weapons jump from 48 raw to 55 raw....not much of a jump. But I'll try some of them. I have to trade balanced for either close range or boomerang specialist though. Somehow I don't think this is going to replace my GL and HH But for player 2 it would be cool to have cats rather than bowguns since neither of us have a clue what we're doing with ammo
