I hate single armor pieces contributing. I like unlocking skills via threshold like the series has always done. It requires skill and thought. There are negative skills you have to worry about gemming out, and positive skills you have to strategize activating, and squeezing as many activated skills out of an armor set as possible.
Otherwise it's just like every other ho hum game. Yay, armor set adds some skill. Yay, another piece adds some more. Such skill and strategy needed there /s That's what set the series apart- it took thought and strategy. It took planning. It was like playing Tetris with skill sets. Trying to fit blocks of certain sizes into a limited contained space. With the new system... anyone can do it. There's nothing to do actually. You can mix and match whatever you want and you're still benefiting. Completely thoughtless. No strategy required. They took something that required skill and made it into something that does not require skill.
And it wasn't just skill, but mental skill, which complemented your reactionary skills in gameplay nicely. It was a balance of physical, and mental. Your ability to hunt the monster was a test of your physical gameplay skills, but your ability to work with in the confines of the skilll system to maximize activated skills and minimize negative skills, that was a test of your mental capacity. And with that gone, it feels unbalanced, and less satisfying. No pride in your set, because your set can be accomplished by a noob spinning the bottle with what pieces to buy.
That slight difference is negligible. Monster Hunter is a skill-based game. You could make it to where you can button mash through the hunts without any combos. And one could still argue that " if you don't button mash you're still going to do better" and that may be true, but it doesn't take away the fact that it removes the pride in achievement of accomplishing something that's actually challenging.
The one thing I always used to say I loved about monster Hunter was the skill system. And they took that from me and made it like every other dime a dozen game out there. And that is probably my number one complaint with the game- is the skill system.
It's the fact it required skill and thought, versus a system that requires little to no skill or thought. And if you do put skill and thought into it you barely benefit more than someone who randomly slaps whatever armor on they come across.
It was fun to activate skills and strategize to get a skill activated and mathematically figure out how you were going to get the set of skills activated that you wanted. If you failed to do so, then you just did without that skill. You were only able to get 9 points? Then too bad, you suck, deal with having less. But to those that prevailed, to those that figured out a way to get 5 full skill sets activated instead of just 3... that felt great. That was an accomplishment. That was half the fun of the game. And that's not even exaggerating- The whole point of having motivation to go farm these monsters was to create the perfect skill set of gear. And it required hard work and dedication and problem-solving.
All that is gone now.
There is no strategizing. There is no skill. There is no hard work. You just slap on whatever you feel like and if you only have this many points in a skill, well that's perfectly fine. You still benefit just as much is the guy that skillfully put his set together. Every single skill point on your armor, you are reaping the benefits of, despite doing absolutely nothing to earn it. Skills used to be earned. Not just from hunting the monster and buying the gear, but from strategically assembling said gear into the perfect match to activate as many skills as possible.
Akin to the gear system of tank add-ons in Valkaria chronicles or the upgrade system of weapons in Resident Evil. Here is a 9 x 9 cubic block of empty space and you have upgrades of various shapes and it is up to you to skillfully assemble them to squeeze as many of those shapes into that empty cube of space as you can. It was a game within a game. That was the addiction.
I think a major reason why I lost interest in World so quickly was specifically because I had nothing to fight for. Nothing to earn. All the skills were handouts. You want evasion? No prob. Just slap on whatever armor you can get that has evasion and there you go. No mixed sets required. It was all handed out free of charge right away.
And that's why they got away with making decorations so hard to get... because you didn't really need them. You weren't missing out on a skill by not having that decoration. You might've had one less point less in the category, but you could just fill that with whatever else you wanted. You were still benefiting from all the other skill points you had. And that just dumbs down the game and dumbs down what makes the game fun.
When you don't have to earn your activated skills and it's just given to you it's kind of like modding the game. It's why people who hack lose interest right away because the challenge is completely gone. And that's exactly how it felt in the world. The challenge was gone. Didn't have to earn squat.
They absolutely nailed the armor system in all the previous games, and when people used to ask me what made monster Hunter so much greater than other games, the very first thing I would say is the amazing skill system. And what's the very first thing they did in the World? They removed the amazing skill system and replaced it with the skill-less status quo system of every other game out there. And they did it to make things less complicated for new players. But the complexity is what makes the game fun and addictive. And it's not like it was rocket science- you have thresholds and if you activate said threshold you get the skill. This system also allowed a pro/con scenario, where there was actual weight to your decisions. Sure, you can activate that final skill, but take a negative skill in doing so. Is it worth it? Is the benefit worth the downside?
Now that question is no longer asked. There is no downside.
Yes or no might do, but that doesn't mean I need to conform to the answer someone demands (especially after the fact).
If I answer and say I don't like something, I'm going to clarify and elaborate and explain exactly why that is, not just to one person but everyone involved in the forum discussion. Feel free to read or skip over however much you like.
So. I just ordered the Arctis 3 Headset with Bluetooth, the new 2019 model that connects to Switch via headphone jack, but connects to your phone via Bluetooth.
It then combines the audio from your phone (be it phone call, Discord or Nintendo Online App) with the game audio, without the need for splitters or a shoebox full of cables.
As much as I've been hunting online with my brother, I get sick of turning the TV volume to Lv. 6 and blasting speaker phone on a call. This headset should make hunting online in MH much more enjoyable.
Ran through all the G1 keys, gonna plow through up to G3 and make a new G-rank Garuga set (or several) then later transmog them all with various other stylish sets, like silver los, astalos and Glavenus. Maybe Lagiacrus. We'll see.
Also been working on doing all the quests from 1 star up. Got all of 1 star and 2 star check marked, and working on 3 star now. Gotta say... dang there's a lot of quests in this game.
@zionich
Are you G rank yet? We're gonna start pushing through up to G3 to unlock a bunch of G rank quests and monsters for armor sets before heading back to high rank to kill off all the upper tier quests (double rajang, savage jho, etc, although we did farm savage jho already- he's a fun one)
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
@JaxonH Still HR 5. I have been working on the village quest because I have a bad habit of just doing what ever quest other people post while I am in the HUB.
My mom got me a cheap USB Bluetooth transmitter that works good with my Bluetooth headphones.

Should download the MHGU Database app from Google Play Store if you have Android phone/tablet.
I swear to you it's the most amazing app I've ever downloaded in my life and I am a person who doesn't really like apps. In fact I typically try to avoid them. This is the ultimate app and must-have companion for playing this game!
It's instantaneous. You tap the icon and you're immediately into the app. It has all of the information from Kiranico boiled down into a much more user friendly interface, along with a wish list and armor set builder and all of that.
So I can tap on the armor section and browse through armor based on rarity. It shows all 10 rarities plus the X rarity. Once I tap on the rarity it shows me all the armor sets in the game for that rarity. And if I tap on one of those armor sets it breaks it down into the 5 pieces and what the statuses are and elements and it's skills and slots and defense, and if I add the set to my wishlist, it shows a grand total list of all items needed to craft the set. Actually it shows that regardless, even if you don't add it to the wishlist.
Then for each item you need (say you need a total of 7 Monster slogbones to make the whole set, and 5 conflagrant sacs, and 9 seltas cortexes, etc) it shows a fraction out of the total you need for each item. And as you obtain these items during hunts you can tell it how many you have out of the total by simply toggling the number to what you own. Once you have all you need for that particular item, it grays out to reflect the fact you don't need any more of that item to make the full set of armor.
It makes finding armors that you want incredibly easy, and it makes it even easier to see all the materials you need to craft the full set and keep track of those items as you get them.
It has every area and map in the game, and tells you which areas monsters spawn in and which areas they will travel through, it has every single monster listed and if you click on one it will tell you their weaknesses and items you can use against them like shock traps or flash bombs, and it will tell you statuses it is weak against and ailments it can inflict upon you, it will tell you the habitats it can be found in and which areas in those habitats, and the order in which it will move through those areas (such as 3 --> 4, 5, 7, 9 --> 6). You can then tap on that habitat and it gives you a full screen view of that map.
All weapon trees are shown, all quests are listed, Palicos, combining list, decorations, you name it. It's all there. And everything is hyper linked to each other. So you could tap on an armor set and see all the items you need to make it, then if you see an item you are not familiar with you just tap on that item and it takes you to the items description and page, then you can tap on where it can be found and in what maps for low rank and high rank and G rank, which monsters drop the item with which percentage for drop rate, and what quests will give you the item as a reward and which percentage drop rate.
It's freaking incredible! My brother told me about this app and at first, I kind of shrugged it off because I always just go to the Kiranico website... never again. I will never use that website again while playing this game. This app is soooo superior in every single way.
The ONLY complaint I have, or the only thing I see that I think could make it better, is quest pre-requisites. It doesn't tell you which quests you must complete to unlock a certain other quest. I can't really be upset about that though because neither does Kiranico, or any other wiki I'm aware of. It's just really hard information to find. Hopefully whoever made the app will update it with quest pre-requisite's one day. That is a very minor complaint in an otherwise flawless app though.
I finished all G3 felt so good. I'm done wth completion will move on to different things I need stuff to do later on except I want to clear up all the last HR hypers. Did most of them last night I already had most of them done, and I got to say they hit harder than some G4 monsters. Made some cool sets farmed last boss ( I will never get a gem). Might be time to break the HR. Unless I go down that rabbit hole of deviants first. SERENITY NOW!
Did some arena quests got my 3 slot crit up gems. Made the black belt armor really liking that at first I thought it wasn't that good. Might seem bare bones but its' about all you need for fast weapons. Latent power +2 is very underrated. Throw in a descent charm and narga weapon and its pretty versatile for a lot of situations considering the helm is the only one with slots. Its not needed for all the skills but the 3 slots are nice. At first I only wanted the torso up parts, but turned out I like this set.
