Topic: Monster Hunter Rise

For whatever reason, Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak physical release (base game on cart + Sunbreak as DLC) doesn't show up in search results on Amazon. It's nearly impossible to find.

So I'm trying out the new Switchaxe counter and just keep getting hit while in counter pose. But I can still fire off the discharge if I press ZR. Is it not a true counter then? You have to manually trigger the discharge still?

EDIT: Yup. Says so in the description. You press the trigger button right as the attack lands to counterattack. So not automatic. That, coupled with the very long windup for the move meaning you have to really prep in advance (though that shouldn't be too difficult as G Rank monsters are pretty much always attacking) and the fact that it costs two wirebugs means this thing has some serious drawbacks.

Still, it's better than nothing I suppose. I literally never used whatever ZL+A wirebug move the base game has anyway, it's only ever Invincible Gambit spam. So I guess this will shake things up at least a little bit.

EDIT²: Oh looks like it has a fast recharge speed too. 2 wirebug cost yet fast recharge speed. What an odd combo.

I was confused about that too, but finally figured it out.

I did use the silkbind where it charges your gage and makes it not deplete for a bit. It's also useful to close a gap in the process or get out of the way. Pretty handy move, actually.

.............Espinas is probably going to be my newest most hated monster now just from seeing this video. >_>

The armour is so cool looking though. Even if the perks on it are bad, I am gonna have to fight it enough to make a cosmetic set.

Can't wait to fight Espinas in all its paralyzing, poisoning and fireballing glory.

Getting close to release date and still no listing for the controller or amiibo in the US.

I'll probably craft gems for poison and paralysis immunity and build a specific set for fighting him.

I like that. It's been a while since I had to build specific sets for certain monsters.

I booted up Monster Hunter Rise in preparation for Sunbreak, and it's almost scary how much I've forgotten about hunting monsters. Well, there's still a week and a half for me to relearn everything.

Been making decent progress but struggling with Zinogre, namely in the context of Special License Test 3. Rathalos I find easy but then get carted 3 times by Zinogre.

Would I be better off focusing on the 3 star hub quests to unlock 4 star hub instead?

You're gonna need to beat him one way or another. If you can't beat him to skip low rank hub you'll be in serious trouble in high rank.

My advice is, craft new armor and upgrade it, or upgrade your current armor. Craft new weapon and upgrade it, or upgrade your current weapon. Bring nulberries to cure thunder blight. You take way more damage if you don't cure it.

And try to pay more attention to not getting hit. For example, when he does the paw stomp move, he'll either do it 2 times in a row, or if he's powered up, he'll do it 3 times in a row. Use that to dodge roll, dodge roll, (or if powered up 3 dodge rolls) then exploit the opening knowing he won't do it again. Watch the back tail slam, and use it for an opening. That sort of thing. Just pay attention to his tells and moves, try to recognize the patterns.

And most importantly, stay topped up on your HP. Don't risk it.

Unrelated, but my love for the dual blades has grown exponentially the more I use them in Rise. I'm as comfortable with them now as I am with Switchaxe or Insect Glaive, probably more than Gunlance now even. The tipping point was definitely once I got max constitution and evade distance +2. Now I can dash ALL over the place like a fiend, and stay in feral demon mode for ages. I can even keep pace with monsters that are running away. And yes I mean when they go into full sprint on their way to another part of the map. Absolutely insane.

I got a Palico with Go Fight Win too so sometimes I'll just have seemingly infinite stamina. Having the time of my life.

I do think finding your weapon is the magic ingredient in a Monster Hunter game.

You are initially overwhelmed by clunky combat, obtuse and often times brutal difficulty design, seemingly unnecessarily complex overlapping systems, a gear system which can be alienating in it's complexity (mostly things to awfully designed UI) yet oddly shallow too when taken in the context of similar games that allow for flexible playstyles/defined roles but then when you find the right weapon, it is just like everything else somehow falls into place.

World was pretty much 60 hours of pure misery, then I launched over a monster with the Insect Glaive and like some blinding flash.... I got it. Suddenly, the game was like some grand song, playing along to my every beat.

Rise infuriated me for dozens of hours as I tried to get to grips with the new wire bug mechanics and Switch skills, while battling monsters that had been retuned for the faster, more arcadey, loop of Rise. Then I DOOT'd a monster in the face and knocked them over. They got up and immediately DOOT'd them back over again. I then somehow DOOT'd them over to the other side when they were still down and was just like.... This is it. That brilliant flash. I see it now.

One cool thing with Rise, is I think the Switch Skills really allow this moment to click more regularly. In World I tried a bunch of weapons in the end for something to do, but nothing gave me the same joy that the IG did. Going back to monsters that were once my nemesis, dancing around them and beating them into floor. But with Rise, a lot of weapons you pick up, aren't truly complete until you get your Switch Skills. So you might pick up a weapon, not enjoy it, but if you stick it out and get the skills and make a loadout for your style, you get a pretty similar moment of illumination.

It also helps they made a lot of weapons easier to use, the Switch Axe and Horn are probably my favourite weapons in Rise, I bounced off both of them in World because they were simply too hard to use (for me) and the learning curve in World just felt that much more brutal, as you didn't just get some new skill along the way that would suddenly allow it all to slot into place.

Just beat Malzeno in the demo. Great hunt. Can't wait for the expansion to hit. It wasn't too bad with the Gunlance once I got the monster's moveset down.

I did have a little stint with Dual Blades in Rise, since I'd already crafted an armor set with Constitution and Stamina Surge for Insect Glaive and Gunlance. You can definitely smoove all over the place. Even Rajang was too slow to keep up with me.

All the weapons are fun in their own right. Dual Blades didn't click with me in Rise, for whatever reason, but it's certainly the best they've ever been.

BTW, I just beat Astalos in the demo with Greatsword. Had to use SwitchAxe the first time because I'm not good enough with GS yet. But, I managed to pull it off a bit ago. That Hysteria counter is sooo freaking clutch. It's just really difficult to use, for me at least. I tend to mistime it or not have 2 wirebugs when I try and then get smashed to smithereens. But this last run I did it twice, and it felt so rewarding.

Playing GS makes the game a lot harder for me, which may prove too much with the added difficulty of Master Rank. But we'll see. If I keep carting I'll just revert back to SA and practice GS in my spare time.

I'm in Richmond, Indiana for the week (job emergency, they sent me down with hardly any notice) but I'll be back this weekend, and Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes will be out. Gonna play that for a week. Then Sunbreak drops the week after, and I'm clearing my schedule every day after work to hunt with you (when you're free, at least).

@JaxonH Great Sword in Sunbreak looks really fun! I really should give it a shot in the demo because having a counter seems like it would be about as fun as doing the dodge-into-counterattack combo as Valor GS in Gen Ult.

Yeah unfortunately it's difficult for me to get specific weeks off unless I ask WAY way in advance, so I won't be free to binge Sunbreak on release week, I'll just be available at the usual times.

Ugh...I don't know if I can survive another 9 days...I wonder if there are any more maps or if that's it. Hard to say...ah well, I'm guessing we'll get another small trailer with another reveal before release. (happened with Rise, even though the only new reveal there was Apex Rathalos, lol. I'm guessing a similar thing will happen here...)
