Just fought the Rathalos. He's as scary and aggressive as ever.

EDIT: Also, glad I watched a tutorial on my weapon recently. Had no idea this "infernal melody" mechanic was even a thing. It does pretty nice damage.

I've been playing this all weekend and I'm so glad that I decided to try to get into this series. I can already sense that I'm going to sink hundreds of hours into this game.

To ease myself in, I've been taking my time with the village quests and I'm currently nearly finished the 4 star missions.

I definitely found that the tutorials added to my confusion and just dismissing a fair few of them and just getting into the action was much better. Plus, there's some fantastic YouTube guides being created that are so helpful.
I think for my first 15 or so hours of playing with the Sword and Shield, I thought that falling shadow was a crappy move. I watched a tutorial and very quickly realized the error of my ways 😂😂.

According to the tracking information MHR should be in my hands after work today.

It feels great as you learn your weapon more and discover moves and mechanics you never knew existed.

I watched Rathalos and Nargacuga go at it in a turf war yesterday. Love the classic monsters.

@Magician
What's your experience with MH been? Have you played the series before the demo? Sorry if you've already said. It's hard to keep up with so many different people in the thread.

Dabbled in MH3U, dabbled in MH4U, dabbled MHGU, and 200+ hours in MHW & Iceborne.

I have respect for the series, trying multiple times to become invested, but didn't dive deep until MHW.

I just realized that, even in hunts where I kill three large monsters, I've NEVER hit the ten minute warning in this game. Not once. I'm killing monsters so much more quickly.

I'm guessing a lot of that is because I'm not SLOOOOOOOWLY going around the map looking for the monster. My dog gets me through the big open areas quickly, and then I websling over mountains, lol.

Although my Basarios armor might be a bit overkill, too. I'm noticing some of these mid-game monsters are barely able to damage me. The Rathalos is scary, but even if he gets a direct hit on me, it just isn't that... big of a deal.

@JaxonH Do you know what controls when weapon upgrades are made available in a line you've already unlocked? I wish the game provided more info on that. I get the feeling that maybe Hunter Rank advancements are involved.

Im still in the low rank 2 star quests for the Village stuff in the beginning and have found a couple of the Relic lore stuff. I think its neat for that stuff where Monster Hunter World doesnt even have that stuff

Heck Im still not fond of how freaking huge the Tigrex and Barioth monsters are in World. Size of big tanks put together or something. Barioth in my opinion i swear Capcom made the Barioth huge on purpose and made him tougher and wilder in World.

In Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and/or 4 or Generations, i enjoyed fighting the smaller Barioths

As soon as you get a material used in the upgrade, it reveals on the tree. Until then it's all ???

And ya, not only do palamutes make getting around way faster, but Rise eliminates most of the time spent searching for monsters. On top of this it also gives monsters smaller HP pools like World did, which cuts down the time in hunts considerably. Which is cool because it makes farming monsters less tedious if you need a plate or gem or something.

@JaxonH Alright, thanks.

And I see it's not just my imagination. Monsters ARE dying quicker.

Well, I'm not going to complain about monsters not being HP sponges anymore. Frankly, running up against the time limit in a hunt I was already doing well in because my DPS wasn't optimized for it was never fun.

I'm halfway done with 5 star village Quests. Probably be done by the weekend, and plan to do the 6 star Quests over the weekend and the following week.

After that, it's Hub time. I've already done the minimum key Quests for HR1-HR3 and unlocked High Rank, but I want to do every single Low Rank Quest before moving on to High Rank. Otherwise that content gets wasted. It's not fun going back to play Low Rank Quests once you've got High Rank Gear. I suppose you could strap on LR armor with a less powerful weapon, but even then you're used to higher difficulty which makes it feel too easy.

But ya. Once it's Hub Time, I wanna hunt with you and TJ and everyone else. Run through all the Low Rank Quests, then in High Rank, I want to craft at least 50% of the armor sets and weapons. They're all so good. I want a wardrobe like Russel Brand, with a full walk in closet where you can just smell the leather in the air.

GOOD LUCK trying to craft all that in this game. Unless some new exploit is found beyond the occasional valuable found at the Argosy and VERY occasional Golden or Silver Egg that I've seen as rewards via subquests, you'll be down to a couple hundred zenny after making one full HR armor set and a weapon or two. It's seriously difficult to keep ahold of money in this game.

I've heard people who got into HR before me complain about this and I thought they were just exaggerating or something but, haha, nope. I'm in the same boat after making the Utushi set and upgrading my hammer, though I do have a bit more cash now because Pukei has been refusing to give me it's damn Toxic Sac.

I heard that people capture monsters more than slaying them.. which is odd. I know you can get some rare materials if you capture them, but I always just slay them, as I have no real idea how to actually capture monsters.

I've been wanting to pick up a new weapon, so far I've stuck by the Lance, Greatsword and Dual Blades and am decently proficient at the three of them any recommendations for what I should try next?

@VoidofLight Capturing is very easy, you just lay a trap in the ground and then slap the monster with two tranquilizers once it's stuck in the trap. Pretty much an instant easy quest end, which is why so many people do it.

The problem is there actually ARE certain mats that are exclusive to hunting rather than capping, and when hunting online people just tend to cap the monster automatically because it's just so much more efficient to do that rather than fight the last 5 minutes of the hunt to kill it, so you'll likely miss out on the hunting exclusive mats.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

@TeeJay Ah. So it's good to do sometimes, but hunting is still better to do in most cases.

Excuse me, buster but I still use high rank even G rank armor when doing low rank quests in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Monster Hunter 4 and Generations for my Nintendo 3DS.

Nothing wrong with having stronger armor and weapons when going back to the low rank quests.
Youre supposed to have fun.

@VoidofLight There are pros and cons to both. Capturing monsters gives you more rewards in general, even if you miss out on the one mat that's hunting exclusive. That and hunts end a lot quicker allowing you to do more in less time. So it's a matter of personal choice, really.

Unless you're hunting online in which case it's all up to the first person who decides to drop a trap down since there isn't much you can do to stop them.

@FattyWhale_42 Oh, I'll have a look at this, thanks!

Thats... kind of my whole point. It ruins the fun. Once you get accustomed to higher difficulty, it's not that fun to go back to way easier hunts. Even if you purposely gimp yourself with armor and weapons, the difficulty is still a problem.

Which again, that's why I prefer to finish Low Rank before moving on to High Rank. If you like to do it different, hey, more power to you. You do you.
