A viewfinder is how it should be (for handheld, anyways), but that's not actually inverted. It's tilting the view wherever you want via rotation around a different axis. And that's how gyro is for almost every game in handheld mode. But on the TV, the viewfinder method doesn't work because you're using a controller. So for docked play, the controller imitates a pointer, so to speak.
The only difference between the two are as follows: the controller (shoulder buttons) points upward to aim upward, and downward to aim downward. Same for the viewfinder mode used in handheld for most games. The difference is in the left/right, where the roll and yaw axes are switched. Using a controller, to aim left and right you would rotate around an axis extending away from the face buttons, to "point" left or right. Whereas for handheld mode, the viewfinder mode is preferred and rotates around an axis extending away from the shoulder buttons. This creates an experience like looking into the world seen on the screen. But that's not inverted, which would actually result in the opposite happening. Tilting to view in one direction and the camera goes opposite. That wouldn't work.
I'm not sure if you're playing docked or handheld, but here's the deal. In MH Rise, they nailed the gyro on the TV, but for handheld, they failed to swap out the roll and yaw axes to implement the viewfinder method in handheld. This results in still needing to "point" the shoulder buttons as if the image were on a TV and you were aiming at it for left/right movements.
So if you're playing handheld, that's likely the issue you're noticing. Which is not an inverted controls issue, it's a roll/yaw swap issue that should have been done to change between pointer and viewfinder modes on TV and handheld. It makes gyro in handheld unwieldy. I still manage because I'm aware of the issue, but I'd love it if they updated the game to swap roll/yaw for handheld Gyro and fix the issue once and for all.
@JaxonH Have you played Elite: Dangerous on PS4/PC? The word "yaw" reminded me of the spaceship controls in that game. God it was a chore to learn but it was a very fun experience. Really put you in the captain's seat and instilled that responsibility.
Roll and yaw are kind of difficult concepts to explain. Easier with a diagram. But ya. Roll, pitch and yaw represent rotations around the X, Y and Z axes, and is often referenced when piloting.

@JaxonH The controls were very strange. Up and down on the left control stick adjusted your elevation, on the y axis. Left and right on the left stick would either roll the ship forwards and backwards or side to sides. At times I nearly crashed out due to getting confused but mastering it induced pride.
The game world’s also huge, with 400 billion star systems. They have Earth as well so in a few years I may visit.
So I managed to get myself carted fighting azuros with an LBG. And then AGAIN with a GS. How is it even POSSIBLE to fail at that?
Bowguns feel weird. Having largely skipped much of world, I'm used to having a turret mode. These feel shootery-but also not. HBG is cool in its own way, but I can't quite get a feel for this new LBG. It's like a bow, but less versitile?
I could see myself playing HBG at times, but I think of the ranged weapons bow is the better bet.
GS, I've never done great with GS. I'm doing better this time, but IDK I get killed out of nowhere it seems. I still adore GL, but I really want to focus on new toys.

Nope. It works exactly the opposite of how it should, even in handheld. If you tilt the console towards yourself, the view moves down instead of the natural direction of up.

Imagine a long stick attached to the back of your controller. Now use it to point at the screen. That's how it should be. It hurts my brain when game designers don't get this right.
When you tilt the console toward yourself it moves up, not down.
And the big stick pointing out the back of the controller (where shoulder buttons and USB-C port is... the part that naturally points at the TV screen), it does point at the screen exactly how you're saying it should.
I feel like your game isn't behaving the same as everyone else's lol. It works the same as in Splatoon, Zelda, Sniper Elite, Resident Evil, etc etc (aside from not swapping roll and yaw for handheld)

So you can see I'm not imagining things. It really does aim up when you tilt toward yourself, and down when you tilt away, just like every other game.

Unless the full game is different from the demo, I can confirm that when you tilt the console, that is to say the top of the Switch away from yourself, the view moves up instead of down, and when you tilt it towards yourself, it moves down instead of up.
@Northwind Glad it's not just me! I've never heavily played range because of the split in armor sets. I figured if you have to focus on blade or gun it's more versatile to favor blademaster armor. But I played with the ranged options a lot in low ranks and always enjoyed it (almost mained HBG last time.) I was looking forward to going back and forth this tame with the unified armor, but.....LBG is pretty underwhelming and HBG is just...weird feeling, though it seems to pack a wallop anyway.
And supposedly IG was nerfed somewhat as well. Though the one thing we know with the HH nerf from the demo is to expect Splatoon level "metas" to form around the nerfs and buffs in patches, so the BGs may get buffs and become OP at some point, too.
I'd forgotten entirely about Tri's MBG. That was a weird one.
Did anyone that ordered their amiibo from gamestop actually get them? Mine have been “delayed”.

@Ulysses Even as a super casual MH fan, I can feel the "oversimplification" of the bowguns as a negative. I agree, because of the armor I only dabbled with the bowguns in Tri, but all that customization of the bowguns made me really really envious of that gunner armor to go play with it all. It's kind of fun to play HBG still. But I do agree about the wvyernsnipe abuse. That's incredibly powerful and makes it feel like the primary, even charged shots, are only useful for waiting for the recharge, while the real attack comes from the wyvernsnipe. Not that it's not a high risk move, lining up for even a lagombi is really dangerous when he charges in straight lines. But I'm also using that in place of crouch fire.
I'm still trying to figure out what role LBG plays. The DPS is pretty unimpressive, and it's quite a bit slower than even dual blade without demon mode. Even a simple bow without arts seems to deal out more damage more quickly, though bow is appended by that fantastic melee mode that hits harder than most blades....
I'm pretty much a mh noob but I really enjoy this game. A bit overwhelming at first with all the tutorials and menus but it's great fun in single player and especially online with others

Okay, it must just be the demo which exhibits the opposite behavior. I'm still waiting on my copy of the full game to arrive, so I only have the demo at the moment. Second day in a row that FedEx said it would be delivered "today", but it looks like it's not happening... again. Maybe tomorrow.
@Mountain_Man I feel your pain on the package delivery front. Mines been stuck in a local sorting office since Friday.
The really annoying part is that this sorting office is a 30 minute walk from my house 😂
Is there any reason to grab more doggos? I only have two, and I never bother using both at the same time. I don't know why they don't have their own moves and supp-...er, attack types similar to what the palicoes have...

Keep it PG-13-ish.
I mained bow and great sword in World but bow seems pretty underwhelming in Rise with the removal of some of the World skills. Is this what bow was like pre-World or is it new?
Based on the last few pages of posts, is the HBG pretty much the recommended ranged choice this time around?
@Snatcher unfortunately it's not one that you can actually collect post at so they'll need to have put it into a van before they will either deliver it or give me a docket to collect it at another sorting office.
