@TeeJay@Mr-Fuggles777 540p tends to be the magic number for demanding games when played undocked.
Anyway, resolution numbers never tell the whole story. Yoshi's Crafted World looked surprisingly good in portable mode despite running at some crazy low resolution, for example. The best thing to do, as mentioned, is to try out the demo and see if the image quality is acceptable first-hand.
@TeeJay played briefly but got bored and had little reason to grind as the progress and loot didn't carry over.
I would have preferred a streaming option that ran at a decent resolution than playing at standard definition in 2021.
I'd rather not have a streaming version of the game, since then you couldn't play the game on the go. Defeating the purpose of handheld mode entirely for the game. If you want a better resolution, you can just play it on the tv.. @Mr-Fuggles777
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@Ralizah 540p in handheld mode is a joke on these new releases - the Switch has dropped back to PS2 picture quality before High Definition took off and charging £50 for it.
If the demo is an accurate representation then this will be one of the best looking games on the Switch. I feel like people are sometimes too obsessed with frame rates and pixel counts. Forget the technical analysis and simply use your eyes. If it looks good, then nothing else matters.
@Mountain_Man If they care about the graphics, then there's a pc release coming later. Not to mention, the game looks fine in handheld mode. I kind of despise Digital Foundry since it makes some people believe a game is bad due to their reviews, instead of just judging with their own eyes. Specs really don't matter if a game is fun honestly.

Precisely right. The advent of technical analysis, combined with preconceived notions, has led to magnificent, visually stunning games being written off as "unacceptable" by those who either A are just console warring and looking for the easiest vector of attack, or B genuinely don't understand their preconceived notions are wrong. And what they think a certain number represents on screen doesn't actually look bad like they think it does.
The game looks brilliant, both in handheld and docked. Forget numbers. That's all that matters. It could be 120p for all I care. It matters not. If this is what 540p looks like in handheld, then 540p is pretty close to the gold standard. Where else are you gonna play a game of this magnitude on handheld with such spectacular image quality? Before now, 240p on 3DS is the best option on the market. This blows MH4U on 3DS away.
But if someone thinks they know a way of playing this game at higher image quality in handheld mode with 4-5 hours battery life, by all means go pursue that alternative. But to my knowledge, there is no such alternative. Which means this is the best the market has to offer. Which means 540p handheld for a AAA game really is the gold standard. You can't get better than that.
@JaxonH I just want the best version of a game, this is a massive step backwards from world just because they wanted it console exclusive.
I get that exclusives sell consoles but it sucks for fans of a series being stuck with a subpar version to fit on old hardware.
I understand it runs well "for the switch", but it could have ran so much better on the XB1 or PS4 and then the eventual upscale visuals on Ps5 or XsX.
@Mr-Fuggles777
It's a massive step back (visually) as a console only title. At the same time, it's a massive leap forward as a hybrid handheld title. And, it's a massive leap forward in gameplay regardless.
You prefer graphics to the exclusion of all else. Ok. But plenty of people, myself included, prefer hybrid advantage which World did not offer, yet we didn't complain it's not the ideal way we wanted to play. No. We accepted "this is what it is, it doesn't matter what I'd prefer", and we enjoyed it for what it is.
I recommend you do the same.
You have to understand, you are not the only gamer in the in the world. Your preferences are not the priority this time. The last game prioritized your preferences. This time, they're prioritizing our preferences. I know a lot of non-Switch gamers have got in in their minds that they're somehow the only gamers that matter, and every single release should exclusively cater toward what they want to see while pushing everyone else to the margins. But that's just not the case. And while those who prefer the hybrid advantage had to accept that MH World favored visuals and ignored their personal wants, those who prefer visuals will now likewise have to accept that MH Rise favors the hybrid advantage and ignores your personal wants.
Most ppl who wanted MH World on Switch, even if it meant being pared back, were like ok, I'd prefer it on Switch, but it isn't, so let me go ahead and just enjoy it and it's good graphics. And most people who wanted Rise on PS/Xbox, they're saying OK, I'd prefer it on other consoles, but it isn't, so let me go ahead and just enjoy it in its handheld, tabletop and TV formats.
Don't be the Nintendo Switch fan who goes into the MH World forum on PushSquare and won't shut up about how it's is a massive step back from the freedom and fun portable games offered. Nobody wants to hear that. Likewise, nobody wants to listen to someone come in the MH Rise forum on Nintendo Life and harp on about being a "massive step back" because the visuals aren't quite as pretty.
@Mr-Fuggles777 The thing is though, this isn't a "Console" monster hunter. The same team developing this one didn't develop World. The team working on Rise made the portable entries of Monster Hunter, like Monster Hunter Generations and Monster Hunter freedom unite. And for a game made by the handheld team, this game, while not as nice looking as world, looks leagues better than Generations Ultimate.
Playing the demo with all weapons just to make up my mind. I'm not the "quickest" player when it comes to reflexes and I don't want to stress myself too much. I've already gotten some nice advice here, so I am back for more.
I really enjoy the style of the dualblades but because of my previous statement those most likely are not for me. I've played longs sword for a long time and also heavy bowgun, so I want something fresh this time around.
I'm torn between the BOW and the HAMMER. I have no real experience with either of them besides the demo and I feel like the bow is pretty weak and somewhat misrepresented with the skill/armorset in the demo.
So now my question is, to passionate long-term bow and hammer users, what's the thing that makes your weapon of choice stand out and why do you enjoy using them, what about upgrades and how do the weapons in the demo compare to your experience with previous games. Well that was one than more question, still very curious about some answers.
Thanks all in advance!

Top 5 Indies I'd recommend you try: #1 Lovecraft's Untold Stories, #2 Moonlighter, #3 Hotline Miami, #4 Inside, #5 Into the Breach.
It's a Nintendo Switch game, so not expecting it to represent somewhat of a technical step back from a game that stressed (at the time) current-gen home console hardware is unreasonable, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to get a rational response from you on that front.
It'll be on PC next year at 120fps/4K or whatever your standard for acceptable performance is.
...this is a massive step backwards from world just because they wanted it console exclusive.
Here's the part you don't seem to be getting: it's a great looking game. And I don't mean that in the backhanded "It's a great looking Switch game" sort of way. I mean it's a great looking game, period.
@Ulysses I have a love / hate relationship with the switch.
I love the Nintendo exclusives and how accessible it makes playing indy games.
I hate how many compromises need to be used to get games to run on it and that majoriry of games are more expensive on switch.
I would have preferred if they used a different graphics engine for Rise and had it run at a decent resolution, rather than chase world levels of realism and end up rendering in Standard Definition - even docked it's below 720 and everything looks flat and lifeless with the character clipping through the environment in places. It's also lacking voice chat which is a crazy omission for a multi player coop game.
You can be critical of obvious flaws without being a hater.
This is not a drill. I repeat: THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
Buckle up.
Remember back in October, when we said, “man... I wish we could just fast forward time 5 months and instantly be at launch- Idk how I’m gonna make it these next 5 months!”
Well, consider it done. I’ve snapped my magic fingers and voila! Here we are! 5 months later as requested 🙂
Just ordered the game that includes the steelbook. This will be my first steelbook for the Switch
