I haven't played a Metroid game in my life, but I love many modern Metroidvanias (Hollow Knight, Ori 1&2, Blasphemous, etc.). So I'm unsure, wether I should start with Dread, or if I owe it to myself to play the other games first.
@dionysos283 You don't need to play the previous games to enjoy this one. They give you recaps at the start of the game. Though, if you're still feeling a little unsure about Dread, start with Super Metroid if you have NSO! So, get to it, Samus our lone bounty hunter needs your help

You could start with Dread but I'd recommend playing the others first. At least Super Metroid and Fusion, those games are awesome. Metroid 1 and 2 don't hold up quite as well, but the remakes, Zero Mission and Samus Returns, are very good.
...Yeah I wouldn't consider the EMMIs as bosses, that said, I know which boss Quarth is talking about. I somehow managed to take it out on my first try, of course I almost died during the second phase, though. xD

Keep it PG-13-ish.
It seems the developers designed the EMMI's path to use areas where the player is most likely to try and hide. Think you can cloak yourself on the ceiling and wait for the EMMI to pass by? Nope, because that sucker is going to crawl across the ceiling and just happen to bump into you, guaranteed.
Oh, and that last ditch quicktime save? The timing appears to be different for every EMMI, so good luck with that.
I just encountered a boss where you had to perform a counter for pre-animated attack and it took ages before doing it right as it did a lot of feints alongside the game’s stingy small window to counter.
That and the amount of health you loose whilst learning boss attack patterns means you just have to accept you’ll loose some lives as you can’t afford to loose health to learn them and survive the battle. Several attacks are like 1-1.5 energy tanks so I have 5 tanks now; still like half a dozen hits tops.
Honestly, this is slowly dropping down the list of fave Metroid games. I feel Samus Return did it so much better with more lenient counters and less mandatory ones.

...It's that stupid soldier guy with the blade and gun isn't it? Everyone told me that's super easy and disappointing...yet I was being killed by him TONS of times. It was infuriating...and even worse...you encounter it again later.

@FX102A LOL. I think I know which boss that may be, I died more times that I should have against em. I feel like enemies / bosses do a lot more damage in Dread.
With all respect, I feel like Dread is better with the counters because it isn't too easy. In Samus Returns, I felt it was way too easy to just counter my way through everything. I feel like EMMI need a very slightly but longer counter window so that you feel like when you do get caught you are over-powered but have some sort of out, it feels too impossible to counter em when u get caught (it was design this way but it would be less frustrating).
Another solution might be to give a short quick-time sequence of buttons to press in a SHORT time or else game over. This way it feels like an actual struggle and that you have a small chance, the smallest chance to get away.
