Forward flips launch you further, backflips launch you higher, and 360s steer you in the direction of the spin. Their effect was more pronounced in Wii, but even so you'll often want to stick to non-directional tricks to keep your racing line, or even not trick at all during 200c if a turn is very close.

lol I actually have to get used to not trick every bump because of that. Knowing the track is a must in 200cc more than anything. I've sped out of corners and roads too enthusiastically a lot at first.

Yeah, it's taking a LOT of effort to get out of the trick habit in 200cc....and took a while to figure out why I was flying through the curves and off the track until I started thinking about the miniturbo after the tricks. I also forget which curves to NOT try to drift.....I have an impulse to drift them all!

Interesting about the directions though! I think out of habit I'm ALWAYS holding the stick forward when I play...it just feels right holding a stick to go forward So I'm always doing the "launch further" trick apparently.

@NEStalgia Honestly any turn you can drift in 150cc you can do in 200, it just sometimes requires a lot of braking (you can actually brake for quite a while at this speed without breaking the drift, you don't have to F-Zero pump it the way the tips suggest).

@erv It's rare, but there are a few bumps I don't trick on even at 150cc. Mainly the small ramps on SNES Rainbow Road and a lot of the holes of Cheese Land. The minor boost given isn't worth taking the following corner ineffectively.

@meleebrawler Yeah...I'm pretty sure I still need to learn when NOT to drift at 150cc too

I brake a lot....and some of these turns I grind the breaks the entire time....and STILL careen off the edge. So yea, I should probably not be tricking the ramps, and/or shouldn't be drifting the PRIOR turn, and getting a turbo that sends me too fast into the one that I go over the edge.

Interesting the tips suggest pumping the brakes.....I do that by default and habit without having ever read the tips. And I'm not even a 3D F-Zero player (SNES F-Zero for life!)

The little ramps on SNES rainbow cause problems, and cheese land causes problems. One ramp I've learned to skip the tricks on is Animal Crossing, the yellow ramp in front of the museum in front of where Resetti pops out. Sends me into the wall every single time at least in 200.

@Tsurii What setup do you play? The babies tend to handle that kind of thing waaaay better due to their light weight. Bikes in general handle much sharper turns too!

My thoughts exactly; well said!

The one trick that I love doing, though, is on the final turn in Music Park. I can take the shortcut and land on the road so I don't have to use a mushroom. That move has gotten me a lot of last minute first places!

@NEStalgia The 2D F-Zeros were what I had in mind (it's the accelerator instead of brakes, but you get the idea).

When it comes to tricky consecutive drifts like Neo Bowser City's giant S-turn (compounded by low-traction rain), the real trick is getting only blue mini-turbos. Not drifting at all is almost as bad as trying and falling off, since you end up losing a bunch of speed anyway. And yes, it's true that any kind of boost other than a star makes braking (and releasing the gas for that matter) do squat.

@Tsurii That comes out different on Switch, they changed stats around. (I don't have that glider but this one's stats are the same.)

@Blue_Blur Oh, that is doable without a mushroom? Okay, I gotta work on that.

@Tsurii Okay, you know what's depressing? Your build on Switch is outright superior to the one I've been using. Like, every single stat is higher except for speed being the same, and the game only shows ground speed - it's actually faster everywhere else.

That's the end of me hoping for this version to be genuinely better balanced. The main problem in both versions is, they balance vehicle parts to make speed the hardest stat to raise, but they don't seem to have done the same with character stats, so heavy character + light vehicle builds are just stupid. I'm going to insist on playing Villager anyway, but geez.

Who the heck gives a toss about stats outside of Time Trial?

Seriously. All the stats in the world mean squat when facing items, and it's all the more true in Deluxe now that twice as many can be fired. It's nothing worth losing sleep over. They only dictate your playstyle.

Compared to DS lightweight snaking and Wii bikes vs. karts, this is nothing.

@meleebrawler don't forget the random possibility of going 150cc or 200cc. That matters too. I created my actual combo considering this & my playstyle and for doing it i used the NLife article with all stats

I'm not that riled up about it. It's just a game. But it does annoy me to see boneheaded design decisions, even if the impact isn't huge. And y'know, at leat heavies in MKDS and karts in MKWii were appreciably different playstyles that were theoretically better at certain things. Here, the Villager build has no advantage whatsoever, which feels worse to me even if it ultimately matters less. I felt good when I won with a kart in MKWii. It's harder to feel good about using something that's just straight up worse.

I kinda miss Double Dash (and I think DS and Wii?) where you could just pick a character and a kart on the same screen, pick up, and play. Games are drunk on RPG elements these days, and while it hasn't been a great issue in MK8, it seems like a step back for the series' focus. It's not a sim racer with labyrinthine customization options.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

Just had a race where I dodged a blue shell by using a speed panel! A red shell hit me right before I hit the panel, and luckily, I got the boost right when the blue shell struck! I've avoided blue shells with a mushroom before, but never like that!

Constantly switching between 200cc, trying to 3 Star all cups and 100cc online is really confusing my driving. I keep doing brakedrifts online, and then taking turns far too sharply. I can't wait to get up to 150cc area of the ratings, but I'm having to squeeze a few matches in between revising, meaning I'm not going up very fast...

I find it unusual that Blue Shells get a bit confused if the leader's finished the race after they're sent out, and make a whole lap around the track before coming back round to hit the new leader. Was it always like that? MK8 was a few years back, so I really don't remember.

EDIT: And is it just me, or does the CPU deliberately try and stop you from 3-Starring 200cc cups? Every time, it gets to the third or fourth race, I build up a decent lead, then I get lightning bolted/blue shelled to make me drop my defences, then red shelled into third.

@TheXReturns It depends on if when launched the 1st place person has crossed the finish line yet. It will target the next person if given enough time.

I feel exactly the same. I like the simplicity in the older games. Now I find 1 good combination and I stick with it. I don't feel like there's much incentive to experiment once you find a good set up.
It's hard for me explain but I feel that the way it's handled now there's less focus on characters and more on "parts". Meh.

SW-7849-9887-2074

meleebrawler

@Zyrac Your advantage is that you are slightly smaller and harder to hit with non-tracking items.

I feel the contrary about parts, the only statistics that concern me are broad ones like, do I want to go very fast or be more maneuverable, or an all-rounder. Beyond picking parts and maybe a character that can fulfill such criteria, I go mainly with looks. It helps that a lot of stats, including the hidden ones, tend to have negligible, or nonexistent impact at worst depending on tracks.

About setup i thought this: since there is random cc choice, and with newest pink turbo, obviously handling and turbo stats became way more important in Deluxe. That's why i choose a set that is based on this 2 stats, and i'm liking it a lot on both gameplay & fun aspects. It is really good & a lot of fun to me!
