I'm sure it doesn't compare favourably with the other console versions, but it's still a game of merit, and on its own merits, it deserves a hell of a lot better than 5/10, especially when you consider the garbage that GameSpot has awarded such generous scores to in the past, what the degree of mediocrity that such a score should represent. How does this get such a low score while NBA2K18 is shipped on an 8GB cartridge and is unplayable without a mandatory 17GB download?
I was extremely critical of Fifa 13 on Wii U at the time of its release as it was an inferior port on what was (briefly) the most powerful dedicated video game console available at the time. The fact that EA had to make compromises with the Switch edition of Fifa 18 is far more understandable in comparison, and much of the missing content sounds meaningless and inconsequential to the experience. I bought this for a game of virtual football and I'm happy with what is on offer here, and I would fully expect a more comparable experience come next year as 19 will have had more time in development to make parity possible (unless those vehement on boycotting the release get their way and we end up with nothing for the rest of the Switch's lifespan).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE you do realize you were talking about how it's selling better on the switch than any Nintendo platform before and i was telling you the reason right?
GameSpot are well known for giving out low scores but I really can't take that one seriously. Treating FIFA on Switch as it's own thing,it's in no way worthy of a 5/10. FIFA 13 on Wii U was a 5/10 game, not this version, not even close.
Look at people trying to defend this lazy and gimped effort. Incidentally, Gamespot gave FIFA 13 on Wii U 7/10. Both versions are separated by 1% on Metacritic. And FIFA 13 for Wii U is 8% ahead on GameRankings with an average score of 76%.
I'm not trying to defend it, I'm just stating facts. Even the GameSpot reviews states, on the pitch it plays a good game of football. Smooth, responsive game play that's comparable to the other versions. It's been marked down for missing features that we already knew weren't going to be there months before, features missing due to the lack of Frostbite engine. Not being able to play friends is something we didn't know about though and deserves to be marked down for that but not to the extent of a 5/10. The actual game itself is great and surely that's what matters. The Wii U version wasn't, far from it. It had a dodgy framerate and numerous bugs. It was a mess of a FIFA game. Comparing this game and FIFA 13 is like night and day.
Translation: "I still haven't played this game (because I don't own a Switch (because I decided six months before launch that the Switch sucks)) and therefore I have no idea what I'm talking about, but nonetheless I have decided that, out of all the reviews that people have linked to - including several that I linked myself, because hating the Switch is my life - which gave the game a 7 or 8 and said it was a decent game in its own right, THIS is the one review that tells it like it is."
To recap: you haven't played the game, you don't even own a Switch, pretty much everyone says it's a decent game even if it isn't as good as the other versions, but you still feel like you're qualified to say that this one negative review is the one that gives it the right score.

Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
Been playing games for 35 plus years and even I can tell just from game foot-age (see what I did there) that this is a quality game. I will get it and soon as it looks like EA put in some effort but only some effort. I don't care about other missing modes but NBA 2k proved they should be there. The most glaring omission is not being able to play with friends. Good thing is that can be patched. Will it is the question.
@JasmineDragon Bear in mind that if you quote someone it means that any people ignoring that user still see the quote. Worth bearing in mind in the event of any tripey troll posts that don't deserve the screen space.....
Funny thing is, everyone I know who has FIFA 18 on Xbox One or PS4 says "you're not missing much" when I tell them about Switch not having The Journey.
This game is great and I think EA delivered a super football game! I'm not into football and rarely watch it on TV unless there is an European- or World Championship, but I'm having so much fun with Fifa 18. I do not care there is no Journey mode and I'm happy with the career mode and the ability to play tournaments. I don't understand why some reviews are hammering so much on the missing aspects and comparing it to its more powerful console counterparts, EA brought us a super responsive football game that also looks great on the switch. Maybe I'm too easily happy and grateful but it's been a while when I shouted out "YES!!!" in game just because I scored. This game brings out the emotions of doing good which I haven't had in a long time.
The game is great! I had the last 4 versions on Xbox but really fancied the idea of being able to play in handheld mode.
I didn't play Fifa online on my Xbox anyway, I just stuck to the career mode. That's what I'm doing on the Switch and I love it.
I knew which features were missing before I bought it and none of them bother me.
I too get really excited scoring in this game, and I'm not a big football fan either. I know nothing of leagues. I don't understand anything about positions, what offside is, and many of the rules, but if I'm aware of a match (particularly a qualifying or world cup match) involving Turkey (and sometimes Australia), then I would make an effort to tune in if I haven't already missed the game.

@sillygostly You've got a huge qualifier coming up real soon. A 2 leg play off with Syria for the chance to play possibly the US in an intercontinental play off for a place in the World Cup. I'd normally always be rooting for the Aussies but Syria deserve some joy.The fact they're even in this position in the first place is staggering. Some of their youth squad have been killed, others tortured. Then there is the possibility of Syria v USA for a place in the World Cup. You couldn't make it up.
I just checked to see when it'll be played . it's actually on right now, 88 minutes gone and it's currently 1v1. A huge 2nd leg in Australia to come next week.
@sillygostly ..and Turkey (3rd) have a pretty crucial game themselves at home to Iceland (2nd) tomorrow evening (7:45pm GMT) - their qualification group is super tight (just 2 points separating the top 4 teams) with only 2 games left to play! ..looks like it's gonna go right down to the wire!
Cheers for the heads up guys. Funnily enough, I haven't caught any of the qualifying matches as I haven't been paying much attention. I had only found out about the Australia vs Syria match late last night and there was only 10 minutes left, so I gave it a miss. I'm glad that Syria scored a goal, and as @OorWullie said, I'll root for the underdog as well in circumstances like these. After how Syria has been devastated, yes, they certainly deserve some joy and victory under such horrible circumstances, and in with that in mind, I would most certainly side with Syria.
